Music wire is more commonly referred to as "piano wire". You should be able to find
it in the hobby shop where the have the tubing and metal selection. It normally comes
in lengths of 3 feet, and in thicknesses ranging from very thin....like the thickness of a pin,
up to thick stiff wire....1/8" or so.

Good piano wire is strong and springy, it will not bend easily like bailing wire. ;)

FBD. :D

You can get music wire right [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=music+wire&FVPROFIL=++&search3=G o]here[/link]

it doesn't have much to do with music and your local music store won't likely carry it. But your hardware store might.

Music wire/piano wire is a TEMPERED steel wire. You are best served by bending this wire cold. Attempting to retemper the wire is almost always an excersize in futility - either it winds up too soft or it ends up brittle.

Hi.
It is true that the best is to bend in cold, otherwise it will become too soft or fragile, depending on the thermical treatment you give it afterwards.
It is quite difficult to bend it in cold. I use a small tool made of one steel block and three dowels (also steel).

I have also found that a length of pipe over the music wire not only provides additional leverage, but prevents the wire from bending further out from the main bending pin.

Neat; how do you hold the pins in the block?

I have made holes through the block. Try to make them as tights as possible. Then pins are inserted (eventually with the help of hammer; but press machine would be better). Mine is soldered on downd part, but I think that epoxing them would be enought. Even if they are hold by pressure, it is OK.

It is important that you use hard steel for pins. Small ones are made from screwdriver.

Marian
