how do you paint a checkerboard?

I am planning on painting a fiberglassed wing, and I would like to know if anyone has a good way to paint a checkerboard pattern on it?

Do you do a base coat, then mask and paint on the second?

Any techniques would be appreciated.

I haven't done this for a while but I did it once by painting a base coat (The lightest of the two colors) then the checkers went on in two stages.

Every second row of Checkers was masked out then painted. When that had sufficiently cured, I remasked and painted the remaining ones in.

A friend of mine did it once by painstakingly cutting out perfect squares of masking tape then sticking those to the wing and painting all of the checkers in one go. I think it probably took him a lot longer than my method of doing it in two stages.

Another very easy way to do checkerboards is to buy clear label sheets (full size) and paint them with the color of the checkers, let it dry and then spray a coat of clear to protect the paint from fuel (only if the paint is not fuelproof), let dry overnight, cut checkers to size and wet surface with water and a few drops of dish soap on the surface, apply the pre cut checkers to suit your designs, the water with soap allows you time to move the squares in order to align them perfectly. I have found no need to clear the entire surface, the label material sticks extremely well and can take a lot of punishment without coming off. This technique can also be used to do any kind of design on the label materials on an inkjet printer, then you must spray clear in order to seal the ink, I've used this technique with great results.

DR WOGS,

Thanks. I did do a search before I posted.
I seemed to come up with all the same things. Most of it is about monokote though, not painting.
