Covering plans
 

What is the best thing to do with plans before you start building? Is there anything better than waxpaper to put over them to protect them?

yep its clear vinyl over here its about $9.00 a metre but it will last for years doesn,t crease as clear as glass bloody brilliant

Last time I moved I snatched a roll of that stuff they use to wrap furniture. Works great. Probably the same stuff they use to secure pallet loads.

The stuff here is vinyl same as car upholstery but its clear I think the stuff you are referring to is shrink wrap they put it round pallets for shipping it stretches heaps this stuff is very flexi and impossible to rip

Rubbermaid has rolls of Clear Contact Paper called "Clear Cover". It's an 18" wide roll, this one is 8 yards long. I think I bought this at WalMart.
I'm just about to cover a sheet of foamie plans to cut them up for templates.

Is this contact paper stickey on one side or something? Does it achieve the same things as wax paper? (No glue, clear, ect.)

Go to Wal-Mart and buy a 2 - 4 mil drop cloth (about $2.00 ). You will be able to cover several sets of plans with the drop cloth if you are reasonably careful in removing it when done (it not, it is cheap to replace). Unless you flood a joint (get a puddle under it), CA does not stick to it and alphetic glues (TiteBond) stick a little, but a flick of the fingernail usually removes about 99% of the drops.

The 2 mil is clearer than the 4 mil, however the 4 mil holds up better.

Actually, I have found the plastic wrap from the kitchen drawer works quite well. You have to pin or tape it down because it so thin, but glues do not stick to it. About anything, in my opinion, works better than wax paper. Wax paper was fine when we were build with Ambroid and carpenters glue but does not work very well with CA.

If you cover with Monokote, save the backing when you cover your wings. The backing works very well as a plan protector. Great Planes sells a product for protecting plans as well and have heard that it is the same stuff used for Monokote backing.

Press'n Seal works good too. It will stick to the plans but pulls up easily. I've used waxed paper for years but am really pleased that I ran out of it and had to use Press'n Seal (Made by GLAD). I'm going to keep using it. Ron
