Hinge Replacement
 

I just discovered that one of the hinges on the rudder split apart so there are only two remaining. What is the special technique to sneak in a new hinge? How do you pull the old one out without destroying the other two connections.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I really do not want to have to rip the rudder off and start over.

Really the easiest thing to do is to just cut the other two hinges. Then it's easy to just cut new slots for all three hinges. Don't bother digging the old ones out, cut the new slots next to the old ones. Moving the hinge positions, not slotting along side the old hinge!

I've known people to dig the old one out and put in a new hinge without removing the surface but the results didn't look very solid to me.

It is difficult to sneak any hinge in without stressing the other hinges and surface or weakening the area. The best solution is to cut them all and replace them. If you are having issues with flat nylon hinges breaking, use the robart hinge ponit hinges. They are stronger.

As others have said, the best solution is to remove the rudder and replace all the hinges. What plane are you working on here?

I'm not impressed with the Robart 1/2A hinge points, I just had one fail on me. The standard and large hinge points work great, though!
