glassing the wing center section
 

i've seen threads where peel ply or similar is used over a wing center section glassing to assure a super smooth finish but can't find it. any suggestions?

To get it smooth, you may have to vacuum bag it?

Save the weight by doing the normal fiberglassing with finishing resin, then use waxed paper on top of the resin. Smooth it out with a plastic card or try the vacuum bagging. After the resin has cured, the waxed paper peels off, leaving a smooth surface. A little light sanding, and you're off to the races.

i actually used the backing from monocote instead of wax paper. but scraping the excess with a old credit card worked like a champ. this morning i had a smooth finish and i finally found a use for the roll of monocote that was gathering dust.

Saran Wrap (like used in the kitchen) works super well. Just cover the area after fiberglassing with Saran Wrap, smooth it down with your fingers and leave it on overnight. When you peel it off the next day, the finish will be super smooth and feathered in at the edges so well you will not even be able to feel the transition.

This may not be strictly kosher but I have gotten good results. I lay down a little spray on adhesive where the glass is going. Then pull the glass down tight. Then apply thin CA to soak the glass and spread with a plastic bag over my finger. When done quickly and with a fan blowing over the area. This is quick and easy. The monocote wont stick to the CA worth a darn. However the planes I have done this on had a balsa fairing built over the joint anyway.

I use wing center section tape and thin coats of Tightbond. It will take three or four thin coats with drying time in between. Works great, sands well and I have never had a failure.

So the consensus is that you can use a lot of different kinds of adhesives.

It doesn't have to be epoxy

i realize i was a little vague. i was wanting to have a smooth finish and thought the wax paper or saran wrap was the way to go. i was just looking for confirmation.
