Hello all, I would like to claim credit for this idea but I saw something similar and just rigged it a little differently. This not only saves, the otherwise wasted fuel, but it keeps from killing the grass in the pit area. I don't know how to apply graphics to these posts so I will try to "paint a picture with words".
Items needed: a small plastic bottle, (I used an alcohol bottle), and a Great Plains fuel can fitting set,part # GPMP4155. A smaller bottle could be used but access to the inside with a hemostat, or needle nose will be necessary. (TEST to see if bottle is fuel proof before proceding!!!!):eek: I drilled one hole in the cap and one hole near the opening, on the "slope" of the bottle neck. (NOTE: if cap is large enough it is a LOT easier to have BOTH fittings in the cap!) I put the fitting that accepts the fuel probe in the hole on the side of the neck. The TRICKY PART.... is getting the retaining nut on the fitting inside the bottle side/neck. With a hemostat, small needle nose, and patience, it will work fine. :rolleyes:
From the other fitting in the cap, I ran a length of tubing with the filtered clunk to the bottom of the bottle, just like a tank set up. Now just attach some tubing between the top fitting and the fuel probe sticking in the side fitting. You now have a "sealed container". Pull off your pressure line at muffler, stick in the catch bottle's fuel probe, and start your regular fueling method. When finished for the day, put the catch bottle probe into your fill line from pump, reverse your pump, and draw the clean fuel back to the big bottle. :cool: I put a velcro patch on the side of the catch bottle so it would stay "where I want it" during storage in my field box. ....lownslo

A small fuel tank works well as an overflow catch.

Well guys, The small fuel tank is so obvious and simple, I don't know why I didn't think of it.:o I have been in R/C less than a year and flew at 2 fields and saw only 2 guys use ANY kind of overflow cantainer!!! (None of which was a small fuel tank). Maybe I'll come up with a better one next time...... lownslo.

I have'nt noticed many RCers using catch containers either. After a day at the field I find maybe 3 or 4 oz of fuel saved in mine, maybe because I don't have to stop fueling promply.

Bob where do you fly in Indy? I've flown at the Plainfield site, Danville and a little pylon at the southside field.

A lot of people at the field I fly at use a small fuel tank as an overflow container. I just thought it was standard practice.

I belive I have one better! I guy at our field suggested running two fuel lines from the gas cap. One to the tank and the other to the muffler vent. When the tank is full, instead of running thru the muffler or into a smaller container, it will flow back into the original gas. The only cost was additional fuel line and the inexpensive GP fueling system for the cap. This is very convenient and I don't have to carry around another small container in my already full flight box.

I don't need no stinkeen' catch tank. It's only 17 bucks a gallon, right? :D

Ouch!! $17 a gallon. We went directly to red max (about 30 mins south of Charlotte) and got a 25 gallon discount by purchasing 25 gallons at 10.75 a gallon for 15%. We also picked up some plastic gas cans from Home Depot. The cool part was, I had to go to Charlotte for work, and got enough mileage money to cover my portion of the fuel.

I guess its a good thing that I run a 4 oz tank on my magic 3d. I go thru less than a gallon a month flying 2 or 3 days a week. I guess that's going to change when I get the honkin enya 80 4stroke in my majestic.
