Have been reading this site for a while now and learnt more than i could ever stay awake to read from books!!
so thanks to everyone
i am trying to find out what sort of 12v battery to use in fieldbox?

Well I use a EverStart 12V High Power Lawn & Garden battery that I bought at my local Wal*Mart. Works good for me and I also recharge my 12V batterys with an EverStart Basic Battery Charger that is a 1 AMP Trickle Charge charger. I also bought that at Wal*Mart.
I also know some people use little 12V batterys made for this hobby like the one at towerhobbies.com that you can view by clicking the link farther down in my post. I don't know much about them but I think you recharge them every time before you use them. Thats why they are so small, because they hold 12 volts for a short time unlike my bigger, bulkier battery that holds 12 volts for a very long time. Another thing is that I DONT use a field box to store my batery. If YOU ARE going to do that then I would sugest the small one! So hopefully I helped you in some way!

Over the course of 8 years in this hobby I've learned to travel as light as possible, and as conveniently as practical.

I use a glow igniter with built in battery, a manual fuel pump, and a starter with a built in battery pack. Sure I have to charge it more frequently, but I can carry everything easily. It's light and portable. :D

I use a motorcycle battery in my field box. It's slightly smaller than a lawn garden tractor battery, and fit in my box with a small modification. I have a Hobbico Ultra Tote. The modification I made was to raise the height of the battery compartment by 1 1/2". My field box is equipped with an electric fuel pump, power panel, field charger and an on board air compressor for my retracts. I also use an electric starter that plugs into the power panel. I generally use my box for three days flying before I recharge the battery. It hasn't failed me yet.

I use one of the auto "jumpstart" units selling for reasonable dollars now. They come with a charger and usually have a 14-17AH battery inside. This is a very high capacity battery and will last a long time between charges.

I use a 12-cell 2000 mAh sub-C nicad pack (read: 2 6-cell car packs, in series)

I have one of the geared starters by Kavan, and needed the extra voltage.

I use the heavy, nasty, ugly, but powerful garden
tractor battery....I got tired of fooling around trying
to start the big stuff towards the end of the day, when
the little batteries are out of steam.

Guys come and use my rig when theirs won't turn 'em
over....and fast charge their stuff off it too. It'll go
2 or 3 weeks with that kind of use....then I hook it to
an automatic charger....it tops up....and shuts off.

Ready for some more "squad use''.... :D

Yup, As I said above....I do the same thing as Flyboy Dave and just use the big 12V. I've been flying for about 2 years and just replaced it cause it wouldn't hold a charge.

Oh, and how do you like my new Avatar made specail by MinnFlyer? It's a Kadet LT-40 in case you didn't know. That's thew plane I learned on and I am currently building another to just fly around with.

Check out B&P for starters and packs. Not super cheap but an awesome package that is small and portable with lots of jam to start big engines.

Yah....NOT SUPER CHEAP was right! Those things are very cool but to pricey for me!

Sullivan Starters
 

Check out the Sullivan Dynatron starter with their battery pack. I have one with 2000 mah nicads in it that I use with the clubs trainer. We do a minimum of 20 starts a day (currently have five student pilots) and it will give me more than five days of starts before I have to charge it again. It will also start everything up to a 409 Chevy!

(Been lurking for a couple of months.. 1st post.. wish me luck!)

I'm recently getting back into the hobby after a few year hiatus. Used to use a mower battery because I flew in our own fields and used to use a mower to haul a little trailer loaded with stuff.. had to use an electric starter too (used to fly belt-start helis)

Since I've moved from the UK to the US and started getting back into the hobby, I needed a new plan. Apartment with no yard means no mower!

Since I prefer to start by hand and I dont need a vast amount of power for the plug and fuel pump, I thought I'd try my (14.4v) Makita battery hooked up to my power panel. I fashioned a connector out of one of the anti-short caps the batteries come with.

So far its worked a treat. Not had a battery die on me yet and if I do, I've got a couple of spares I can just plug into my connector. Not entirely sure what its going to do to the lifespan of the (NiMH) battery mind you :)
