Balsa Storage Bins?
Hey Guys, I was curious about your balsa storage solutions. (sheets and sticks.)
I'm kind of a organizer freak when it comes to my shop, so let's see a few pics. I'm looking some ideas. Thanks, Kelly |
RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
I have a bucket. I put "building materials " of all sorts in it. They stand up so I can see them. That does it for me. I am a "Messy Bessy". though. Rich

I lay long pieces in empty kit boxes from built planes.. one box holds long balsa pieces.. one box holds the lite ply after sheets the pieces are removed and one box holds rolls covering. ... .. I have freezer bags that hold assorted balsa blocks and thick pieces... one for ply pieces.... and one for sticks up to say 10" long. I have another kit box tthat holds assorted pushrod materials. All have permanent marker identiferf on the sides.

OK, a mess, it's always a mess but it's usually off the floor and laying flat on the shelf. I'm right at the end of a build right now and I will be getting things cleaned up soon. Three boxes on the floor flat and one box of sticks standing. I noticed how nice Mike keeps his plans so I thought I would do a show and tell, Each roll has about three sets of plans. I even noticed I had a couple of kits in there too!!:D

I store the sheet balsa flat on a 24 by 48 inch shelf of metal storage rack. Sticks in old kit boxes, even a box for triangle stock.

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
I use tubes from blueprint paper roles that I get free or u can use chart or blueprint roles for sticks and stuff. For flat sheets i use long boxes like from kits.

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?

I use old kit boxes - the best is still the Great Planes Stik .60 - holds 48" stock. I think I have 3 or 4 boxes dedicated to just different types of balsa and one just pushrods! Holy cow is that box heavy!!!

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
I think I'm building a shelf next to the bench, on the top it would be for basla and ply, I just figured out that keeping it in kit boxes really isn't work that well for me anymore. So I searched at the home cheapo and came across the plastic posts they make for fencing, they are 4x4" and can be cut to leingth, stacked and glued, but it's very expensive.

Old kit boxes with cardboard deviders between the types (plank, stick, ply) and shoe boxes foranylength that will fit in it. Also have some tall/square boxes for dowels, piano wire and longer 'stick' stock. I cut the rearside of the model box top in two corners so it 'hinges' and tape itto the boxbottomso the lid can be opened like a suitcase.

Terry in LP
|

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
Ok, since nobody wants to ask, its a picture of the stick area at sigs kit picking table. The picture is fairly old so it may not look the same way anymore...

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
You are the only guy who may have me beat on balsa stock. I have a few sheets of aircraft ply, too.
Mine are all in a huge box and I have to pull stuff out so that I can find what I am looking for. I'm too busy building to organize myself. |

RE: Balsa Storage Bins?
My better half and the organizer bought me some clothes storage boxes that are designed to roll under the bed from the the "W" store. I have three so far, one for sticks, one for sheets and one for covering. I stack them behind my bench and pull them out as needed.
