Some rust on piston... Solutions?

What should I do about some rust on my 3.3 piston? I have a hard time believing it wasn't there when I quit for the year last fall and the engine was running strong still. Doesn't seem to inhibit it at all. Advice?

unless you store water in your engine, its not rust... some fuels and after run oils can leave a residue that looks like rust. The piston is aluminum and the sleeve is brass, plus every part of the engine has plenty of oil on it from the fuel. After run oil isn't to keep your engine from rusting, its to keep it from getting gummed up by the fuel that's left in there after you run it...

You can soak the engine in glow fuel (something I do every spring before running) and that should loosen up some of the assumed castor. Castor will have a brownish color when burned. What fuel have you been running? I would say if you don't soak it in fuel just to run it. It is not rust.....thats for sure.

Sounds like normal, cooked-on lubrication oil residue to me. Depending on the fuel you use, your piston could turn any hue of brown and still your engine will run perfectly. I wouldn't worry about it.

drummerboy,

If you feel you need to clean it off you can disassemble the engine and use Dawn Power Cleaner on the piston. Brush the Power cleaner with an epoxy brush and rise of with water. It will shine like new. You can purchase Dawn Power Cleaner in Walmart for under $3. It come in a spray bottle. It truly is remarkable how well this product cleans the residue from a glow engine.

If you say its not affecting performance, they why worry about it? Its 100% normal....
