Default DC-3 scale landing gear plan

Like many of you, once I wanted to build a big DC-3. But right from the start, arose the problem of how to make the landing gear in a scale look. Factory-made retracts did not meet my expectations, and so had to go my own way. The development was long , not easy and not cheap. I capitalized on it near to 20 years of my experience of a professional designer, knowledge of mechanical engineering and working with metals.
Now, after three flight seasons, I can say, the retract despite its low weight (580g each) is
solid, functional and reliable.
It's time to share with you the experience.
I have created a CD with comprehensive information about the construction of such retractable landing gear (scale 1:7.5).

Disc contains:

• computer simulations of the movement for a better understanding of the principle, rendered photographs, including a proposal for mounting in the model
• set of engineering drawings of all parts (more than 40), assembly drawing and bill of material
• photos of the finished landing gear in high resolution
• HD detailed motion videos of built in retracts
• brief description, hints and tips
Altogether it is over 200 megabytes of informations revealing the secrets of the landing gear divided into easy-directories.
A complete information is now available to anyone.
I am convinced that the information from this CD will save you a lot of time, materials and energy needed for your own development.
It is worth for those of You, who wants to build a retract yourself.
So, look here http://vimeo.com/38418724 to watch a short trailer….and…. if You are interested in, please send me a PM.

Great that you posted this coz i'm about to get my short kit with all fiberglass parts of Ziroli DC 3, i'm already looking to get it's robart retracts but seeing you did custom CAD based design as a set, plus it's at 1:7.5 scale, so i'm sure it will work perfectly and will look great for this model being 1:8 scale.....

Now when you say your compiled CD is for guys who want to make there own gears based on ur drawing, how much machining is involved to make the parts.

Shortly said, what You have to do:

-cut all the tubes to their length dimensions

-weld them together

-turn the rotary parts (such as housings and shafts) on a turning lathe

-make the flat parts (laser cutting best)

-obtain a few standardized parts ( screws, circlips, a motor, microswitches)

-assembly all together

So, a lot of work, but the result is itworth, IMO.

Very nice work!
I'm building the Top Flite DC-3 these days and also made my own retracts with simple servo drive, but Yours are much nicer!
You can see mine here :

Eric Kwiatkowski from France used my plans and rescaled them for his huuuuge DC-3 with 8 metres wingspan. As a powertrain he uses a 14,4 Volts handdrill with 4S LiPo and 8mm threaded rod.
Here are some photos and a link to the site (in French only):
