RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
All most finished the fuse .. canopy next and it will be done...I have the wing outer panel to do as well...I have left the elevator uncovered until I do the c/g .... the elevators are very heavy balsa ...if I need to take weight off the back end I can cut lighting holes to help balance it.
I have a good day of hardware work to do and then its ready to rip

Pete :
I noticed it has been 4 months to the day sence you started this thread, Thats pretty fast building for such a good job.
Ive also learned quite a bit about these computers in that time. If I remember corectly, your thread is the first I ever posted on. Sense then Ive learned how to post pictures and I started a thread of my own. If your interested in WWI planes, check my thread out.

RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
Hello. I was curious to know if anyone has or can get a 2/40 or (preferably) a 2/60 kit for me. I love the lines of the plane, however since I am only 23, the plane was a bit before my radio control time. I would appreciate any advice on how to get one. I realize they have become somewhat of a rarety aswell. I might even consider scratch building from plans, or having the kit cut for me. Thanks!

RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
Pete:
Definitely looking good.
---------------------------------
Chris:
I have one remaining Dave Platt (Pica) Duellist 2/40 kit, complete except for the wire for fixed landing gear. That’s not really a lack, as nobody builds a Duellist with fixed gear.
I also have one Super Duellist 2/60 Mk II kit. It is complete, and I also have the clear plastic canopy for it which we did not supply with the kit.
Both of these airplanes are intended to be built “Real soon, now.†I will entertain an offer for either or both. Bear in mind, I don’t need the money, so unless you make a strong offer it will be rejected out of hand.
If you are willing to wait a little while, Estes/Cox bought the rights to the Pica kit line which includes the Dave Platt Duellist 2/40 in the early (Mk I) version. According to what I was told by a manager at the Cox division the ARF Duellist they are planning to release is built directly from Dave Platt’s original design, so it will also, even though an ARF, be the Mk I version.
RCM plans service will sell you the plan to build the Duellist 2/40 Mk II.
So what’s the difference between the early (Mk I) and the later Mk II? Two obvious differences; the early has a balance section at the top of the rudder, no sub fin and rudder, and the engines have enough down thrust to see easily. The Mk II version does not have the rudder balance, and the rudder extends below the rear of the fuselage with a sub fin fairing into it. The Mk II also has no down thrust in the engines.
Other differences, the Mk I has both the wing and horizontal stab at +2 degrees incidence while the Mk II is zero-zero on all the aerodynamic surfaces. Finally, the wing has 12 ribs per panel in the Mk II vs the Mk I having only ten ribs per panel. Along with the increase in rib count the Mk II has a slightly greater wing span.
The result is having the Mk I easier for the inexperienced flier, the Mk II is more aerobatic. Either one will fly well with an engine out.
Prices? Pica listed the kit at $200, Estes/Cox says the list for the ARF version will be $319. Building from plans you will control the price.
The Duellist 2/60 Mk II is also due to be released as an ARF. Visit ne-aero.com for the latest on that.
So many options. It is for you to decide.
Bill.

RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
Tim !!! Had a look at your build and it is Waaaaay past mine ..your doing a awesome job..I am just a saw and hammer kinda guy and will stick with not so meticulous style of building
Chris: As you can see Will being a Duellist history buff ( and I suspect a Pro at flying them ) has the info ... you also may want to check Ebay now and then as I have seen the kits on there but not Very often ... you may want to give Bill a offer $$$$$
Snowman: ?? OK you got me who are you really? or do you come around the field once a year lol
Bill: Thanks Bill !! You may want to post a link and talk about the electronic gizmo for twins that you are going to try out ..I have been following along on the thread and sure would like to try one out.
The pictures DO not do the plane any justice being the lighting in the basement and the space makes for poor pics
Today I will put a good effort in finishing the hardware.. lateral c/g ..for/aft c/g ... total weight and setup control throws.
cheers

b]Pete:
The only thing I'd like different is a brighter color on the sub fin - it's the obvious difference between the Mk I and the Mk II - you've got it, flaunt it! Attached a massaged version of your last pictures, hope you like it.
For all:
Here’s the link to the TwinSync thread.

Sub fin in your pic is still gray to me or am I missing something? Its gray in mine with yellow main fin ..But you are right !! I will have a look when it is outside for pics and see if it stands out more.
Also I am setting up the throw for the flaps ....what should I set them for?????? 20 25 30 degree????
Cheers

I didn't change any colors, just brightened the picture a bit and lowered the contrast a little. Also used an edge finder to sharpen it some. And yes, the sub fin is still grey. That was my point - the sub fin will tend to disappear in some lighting conditions.
I've never felt the need for flaps on a duellist, the plane is already a floater. Put them on a proportional channel, see what angle you like.

RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
Carlos:
The last Duellist 2/40 kit available was from Pica, with Estes/Cox buying Pica we all hoped the kit would come back on the market. When I spoke with Cox Fritz said they had no intention of producing the plane as a kit, only the ARF version.
When Ernest Fleming and I ended production of the Super Duellist 2/60 Mk II we negotiated the transfer of design rights to John Marien, of Northeast Aerodynamics. John has gotten a license from Dave Platt to produce the Duellist 2/40 Mk II and the SD 2/60 as kits, and had originally intended to put the 2/60 kit out first, followed by the 2/40 Mk II. He may still do so, but the kit market for R/C planes has shrunk greatly in the past few years, and the twin kit market is a very small portion of the total. At the same time the ARF market has grown exponentially.
Current plans at NE-Aero are to sell the Duellist 2/60 in an ARF version, and it’s close to being ready. With Estes/Cox selling the 2/40 Mk I the difference between that and the Mk II are too subtle for most, they would be competing for the same small market share and neither would do too well.
With enough persuasion I suppose John might make a limited run of the 2/40 Mk II, possibly the 2/60, in a kit version.
There are rumors of Cedar Hobbies being about to introduce an ARF that is very similar to the 2/60.

Bill,
I agree that ARFs are more popular than kits these days. It is unfortunate.
Thanks so much for the response....Carlos

Pete,
I forgot to put my name to post 255 by mistake. Now that I have you guessing, I will give you a clue. Special ordered a plane last Dec/05 which I haven't received yet. Hope you have your new plane ready by the long weekend. See you then.
Take care

RE: Super Duellist 2/60 Build
Hey Snowman, if you are who I think this should interest you, I just bought an ultra stick 60 to replace my Stearman I lost in May. Man what a plane!! I programed in the airbrakes and flaps as well as the full span ailerons and I haven't had that much fun flying in a looong time! Put an O.S. 91 up front and the vertical is better than my 1/3 Cap. Lands like a butterfly with sore feet and will take off in 5 feet or less with full power and full flaps. I know this is the wrong thread for this plane, but just had to share. Sterling.

Pete,
Thats great! The weather is supposed to be pretty good for the weekend. Dennis is camping out and I may also. Oh yes, Sterling if you are in town, bring that ultra stick.

I personally like it simple, just the way it is, but how about an anti-glare panel of some sort?
Can't wait to see some in-flight pics.

Weeellll,,,
Here's Lonnie Fuller's SD 2/60, the first one I know of having been finished. It was at Multis over McDonough this past weekend. It was all done over a year ago. It still has not flown.
But what a color scheme!
Bill.
