As you can see I cut away then had to rip off the skin from the failed balsa center ,,you can also see that it extends the distance it is from the fuse side ...it is skinned top and bottom ...Tim is right it MAY have been to soft ..

So .... on rebuild because I have 6 or 7 oz in the tail now i will make a solid stab and use 1/16" ply cross grain top/bottom that should help a bunch.

the fuse and the wing are not that bad to fix but the nacelle well have to be totally rebuilt.... you can also see that there was good glue contact but the side angle impact snapped it off.

Pete :

From these pictures I can see it is a little worse than I thought, I know it is discourageing, but youll have it back again.

Looking at the middle picture above you can see where the fuselage side was and there is a chunk of balsa torn from the stabalizer from that line. It does look like the balsa was just to soft right there.

I like soft balsa for lightness, but I guess we need to try and pick out a heavy piece for parts like that. I wish we had thought or remembered that a few weeks ago.

The way your saying to fix it will be fine, plus it wont be no trip to the hobby shop, and that carbon fiber is exspensive.

Well I made the decision to go with YS110 4-strokes for powerplants. Also decided to use a c/f rod in my stab after reading about the above misfortune. Glad to see that it looks like an easy rebuild. Mr. Robison, can I help myself by moving the firewalls back with regards to the airframes c/g? If so, how far should I or can I move them back? Thanks. Chic

With the YS fuel delivery system you could put one tank in the fuse on the CG and maybe a header tank in the nacel, but I'm not sure the header tank is necessary and backset the engines this will also eliminate the long moment arm with the engines that could amplify any vibrations that might happen. The header tank could be used simply to ensure adiquate tank capacity since I would think you will need about a total of 32 OZ on board.

Well a couple things have taken priority over the rebuild and that has been flying my other planes ,,, ... with only two seasons up this way BIG winter and Little winter you got to fly when you can.

But I have the next two and a half weeks off starting this Friday and plan on taking a day or two and get at the rebuild.

Don: Did you get unpacked yet? Did all the planes fare well?

Tim: That is what I do alright ..then it starts to look to good to be trash in the corner

No..I don't have any place to put them. I'll have to make room soon as in October the rainy season begins.

Mr. Robison, need your professional advice. How far I can safely move the firewalls back to further accomadate the YS110's without changing the flight characteristics, CG, etc. of the Duellist? Thank you sir. Chic

Well here we go ...this is the battle damage on the back end ....still very solid top/bottom plate for the stab to slide into .... Making a solid 3/8" stab this time ..was able to save the elevators.

main fuse as you see is some cosmetic and reinstall the wing hold down plate

Have to straighten out the nose gear leg.

Cheers

Chic:

You can move the firewalls back to the leading edge of the wing without making any large difference in the flight characteristics, it’s more a matter of the fuel tanks. The fuselage isn’t really big enough to have a big tank in it, and as I said earlier, don’t cut into the wing. I know, the retracts are cut into the wing, but the structure is reinforced to allow it.

Anyway, if you can figure tankage elsewhere move the engines back as far as you want. An inch to an inch and a half should be a good compromise still allowing reasonable tanks in the nacelles. Your decision, don’t worry about the way it will fly, just how long it will fly without refueling.

Pete:

Consider a fiberglass arrow shaft or carbon fiber spar in the horizontal stab.

Bill.

YS 110's in a 2x60? I like it! No I love it!!! In fact it is exactly what I would do.

The plane will be a rocket, believe me my 23 lb P-61 is plenty fast and unlimited with the 110's and I am flying with 4-blade props!

Be sure to beef everything up and mod the structure for serious speed.

OK Bill! went with 3/8" balsa and Dave Brown arrow shafts .....used 12 minute epoxy so it would flow around the shaft ...I used 1/16" flush spacer on the bottom and tape ..now when I flip over I have to epoxy flush as well.

Should get to the fuse and nose gear today or over the weekend ..then have to work on the nacelle.

cheers

Fuse is almost done ..need the wing to line up the Stab .sooooo... On with the nacelle ..after a good clean up of all the edges and liberal amount of epoxy it lined up just like new ..well ...almost ..reinforced the top to the wing/nacelle and I think you would have to jump on it to break it off again.

Just some cosmetic work to cover and re install the hardware again then I can finish the fuse ..test flight ?? ...maybe by next weekend ..would like to have a Twin-Sync but oh well.

Cheers

PS: The stab with the arrow shafts would now make a great diving board [X(] that strong ... If it breaks again then the whole tail end will have to come off ..

Pete :

Im glad to see its all comeing together again, I bet just like always, once you get started, it isnt that bad. For me its just first tearing that covering off and getting in there. I think its because I hate covering so much that I dont like the thought of doing it again.
You know whats funny is, If I say so myself, I am pretty good at covering, but I still hate it.
I hope it continues to go well.

Kerry:

The Super Duellist Mk II 2/60 planes being built by others are all from the kits EHFleming and I packaged a few years ago.

Logic problem:

1) Northeast Aerodynamics is all but totally committed to production of the Duellist 2/60.

2) Northeast Aerodynamics has shipped prototype kits for evaluation.

3) The Duellist 2/60 going together here is NOT one of the Fleming/Robison kits.

4) Barring problems, mine will fly here for working any bugs out, and will be "Officially" shown at Multis over McDonough.

Now work it out, Kerry, you shouldn't have too long to wait.

Bill.
Still waiting.

No, Yes, and No.

Here are the 10 planes I built while in Alaska.

Aren't they beautiful? hahahahah!!!

I hope to go to the next local R/C Club meeting in September.
