Default KMP OV-10 build

Hey everyone,
i got my KMP OV-10 in about 2 weeks ago. I bought it from nemesis4u.
This is a great Kit and it goes together really fast. I believe I could have it flying in 2 weeks if I had not been side tracked by a shipping misshap. The shipping company put the 5 ft long fuse box in a 4 ft area. I have made a claim with the company. I really raised heck so I am hoping for a quick turn around. Any way. I have the reast of the plane all put together. I am currently installing all the controls surfaces and servos. I test fit Shindin gear in the plane and I am now waiting on the first production run of the gear. The gear looks really nice..
I should have it all ready to go just waiting on the shipping co to fix the fuse....
Here are a couple of pic's

All 3 boxes that came out of Texas were damaged. Somebody was having a bad day!!!!!

The instructions that come with the kit should only be used as a guide. It tell you to drill the holes in the leading edge and then turn around and drill the holes in the fuse by just measuring. It would never match up. I locked everything in place and drilled through the bulkhead and into the leading edge. it worked the best. It tells you to measure and drill hole for the preinstalled hold down plates. It would never match up. It was easier to put wing in place and drill from bottom... I made a jig to hold everything in place while I drilled all the holes. it worked pretty well..

The elevator is also operated by just one servo. I did not like that either. so I cut it in half and installed 2 servos for redundancy...

Since my last post. I have all my control surfaces on the plane and all servos installed. I am just waiting on the retracts to arrive. I should get the Shindin gear in the next couple of days. I just got through mounting the engines. I am putting 2 Zenoah G-20's on this plane and they are a perfect fit. I am planning on getting the Bennet G-26 muffler for these motors so to keep all but the bottom tube in the cowl. Here are a coule of pic's of the motor mounted.....

I am really happy how fast this plane goes together.....

Default RE: KMP OV-10 build

Well I have steadly been working on the OV-10. I need to take more pic's. I have added all the ABS parts and have mounted the cowls, engines and throttle servos. I have also mounted the canopy different from the plans. I'll try to take some more pic's tomorrow. But today I got my Shindin OV-10 gear in. They are great. I chose to get the Scale main legs and the full nose gear from Shindin. I had an old set of CJM uppers that I installed in the main location. They just have to be a set that travels 90 degrees. The nose unit has to travel about 98degrees to get the nose wheel in. The plans call for a 85MM nose wheel and a 110MM main wheel. So you have a choice. 3 or 3.5"nose wheel and a 4 or 4.5" wheel. The I currently had on hand a 3" robart wheel and a 4.5" Williams Brother ballon wheel. They both fit in fine. If you plan on going with a 3.5" nose wheel you need to let Shindin know so he can make the nose unit at about 102 degrees so the whell retracts completely. I am planning on going with this set up. The plane look good as it is...Here are a couple of pic's

How much was the Serria gear?? The Shindin was $425 for the Full nose unit and scale main struts. Shindins full set is $600.
Shindin has them in stock. No wait....Not trying to change your mind..just asking..

I have not posted any build pic's lately so here are some more.
I did not like the way the canopy was held on so I did my own thing. I reenforced the edge where I was going to screw the canopy on in the frot and then added 2 tabs to the fuse to screw to.

At the rear of the canpoy I added a doubler to the canopy and then I added a blck at the rear canopy fuse location. I then drilled and tapped throught the canopy into the block.

I am also doing the short nose version since the long one was broken. I decide that I would make the nose removeable. This also made it easier to install the canopy like i did. I will place my batteries out here on a platform I will make later. The nose was not an exact fit so the blue is the filler I still have a little sanding to do. I was able to use a 90 deree dremel to drill pilot holes for the nose and then drill ed them out and added dowels. I then added tabs in the fuse and insede the fibergalss nose. I then drillled holes throught the nose into the tabs. I am holding the nose on wiht 2 4-40 screws....

I have also added all the abs pieces. and the fiberglass exhaust. They go on easily. The plans only give you rough locations. You have to figure out where to put them your self. The exhaust goes on opposite side of the fuse. The radio antenna bases and show in the middle of the fuse behind the trailing esge of the wing. They are actually left of center on both booms....

I have most of my wiring run for the servos. But i am still waiting on 7- 36" leads to finish it out. You can see by the pic's below how I fight vibration with my reciever. I am also using an Isolater by I4C products. It keeps you from getting noise over those very long leads. It also allows you to use 2 batteries for the servos and one for the reciever...

Fair question: Sierra is also $600 for full set. Both look good, tuff choice, I had inquired about Shinden but committed to Sierra due to my personnel history and great satisfaction with his products. He also has several sets ready to shipp.
I guess it a personnel choice and I wish Shinden the best.

Since last post I got my 2 Hangar 9 pilots. I wish they made 2 different one but I get at $14, you can't be picky. I am not doing a complete cockpit. I am doing the busts and paint the rest in. I had to recess the pilots so they would not hit the top of the canopy. I made a template for the hole for the pilots to fit throught and then cut it out with a dremel tool..
I made a nonscale head rest by taking a 1/2" foam and laminating it on each side with 1/32 ply and then cut to shape. I will fiberglass this and paint it before I install it...

Ty plane is looking good when I get mine built you and I will have to do a little formation flying and search and destroy. Keep up the great work at least your plane will be different that is what scratch builders can do with arfs. Ronnie
