Yes, thank you. I was kind of hoping to see the finished product.

Hello Folks,

yes, this is my first post here and yes, I will start to build the 132" Palmer C-130 Herc, too.
My name is Mike, I'm from Germany and addicted to RC modelling since >30 years. The C-130 will be my largest build ever and my brain looms to explode about all the ideas I'd like to realize.
So far I'm waiting for my wood kit from Larry (PCK). I decided to build my Hercy as an electric driven one. 4x 50/60 engine with Ramoser variable props. Christian Ramoser does make me a scale 13.5" prop from an originally 13.9" version. This one will look very much like the original one. As soon as the props arrive I will post some pictures. It will be 2 left and 2 right version props (okay, not scale. C-130 props turn all the same way) so there will be no need for any inclination of the engines.
One thing I try to get more information about is lighting of the C-130. So far I know there are two retractable landing light under the wing between the two engines. Another two landing lights on the outer doors of the main landing gear. Those lights are, as the names say, only for landing and will be switched on with the extraction of the landing gear.
What other lights belong to a C-130 and when are they to be lighted? Green and red position lights? Where exactly are they placed? Are they turned on permanently? Do they blink/flash? Anti collision lights? What color do they have? Permanent or flashing?
It would be great if some of the founders of this thread are still reading and could answer me my early questions. I promise to post my progress studiously with as many pictures as possible. Anyone else's answer is also appreciated, of course!

I hope this thread is still alive and helps me with my crazy project (original quote of my wife ).
BTW: I'll be in NYC from next Sunday for three weeks. Does someone know if there is a place to visit regarding our hobby? Either RC model field, RC store or similar?

Thanks for all answers in advance!

Mike

Mike,

I too am looking to build this aircraft. I've taken numerous photo's at the Warner Robbins Air Force museum of a C 130 in preparation for the build. I'v attached several to get you started. Let me know what else you will need. I would like your advice regarding converting to electric. I have the medium size plans (88 " wingspan) and kit cut wood. My buddies tell me to go electric but I'm not comfortable making the conversion. I've been building for 30 + years, always glow.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,

Mick

Mick,

those are really helpful pictures, thanks a lot!
Now I know at least where some of them are placed in detail. Later on I need to know how to operate them, but this is just a question of programming my sequencer.

Of course I can help you with electrification of your models. I also started with glow engines for years but meanwhile I have changed 100% to electric flight.
Starting from a Piper cub with 20.3" wingspan and a tiny motor powered by a 1S 150mAh battery which is good for 12 min flight time up to a 100" Cessna 188 with a 3.35hp engine powered by a 10S lipo with 5000mAh.
It is no magic in it, just some more wires and lots of power

If you have questions just send me a PM

It has started...

Has anyone seen the brand new high performance 16 blade racing prop before?

Just kidding! This is just a stack of my new Ramoser Vario Props. Originally 13.9" diameter, reduced to scale matching 13.5". Pitch can easily be adjusted for all four blades at once.

This is an amazing little peace of engineering, isn't it?

Okay, step by step I get my parts together. From Hobbyking I got four 4-blade spinners whick look almost scale. Unfortunately they are for right turning props so I have to modify 2 of them for my left turning Ramosers. If this doesn't work I need to go for Krumscheid spinners.
From Nick Ziroli I bought a familiy pack of Robart 3/16" hinge point hinges with the drill jig. I met Nick when I was in NYC two weeks ago. Great guy with lots of experience. And open for questions whenever you need help.
Also the wheels have arrived. 4.5" main wheels and 3.0" nose wheels. Nice light wheels with alloy hubs and rubber tires. Really good quality, I use them on my 100" Cessna 188 already.

For gear sequencing and light arrangement (including retractable landing lights) I will use a Mini Maestro 24-channel servo controller (http://www.pololu.com/product/1357). This great little piece of electronics is able to control servos as well as switch loads in any programmable sequence. Either as a stand alone continuous program or initiated by buttons or (electronic) switches, controlled by your transmitter. So you can control gear and landing lights by a single TX channel and have positioning lights and flashes continuously working as long as the aircraft is powered on.

Still waiting for the "little forrest" from Larry...

to be continued
Mike

I bought them from Modellbau Lindinger in Austria:
http://shop.lindinger.at/product_inf...95&language=en

I don't know about the manufacturer, but in Europe they are sold by some larger hobby shops.

Yes of course I can. Did I mention that I'm from Germany?
Anyway there is a button in the upper right corner where you should be able to switch to English language.

And on we go...

I just received my wing tube with sleeves. It is a "Strongal" tube, which is made from a special aluminum as used for light aircraft. It comes from Petrausch (http://www.petrausch-modellbau.de/mo.../steckung.html). The sleeves are a kind of epoxy-reinforced paper.
Tube is 70.8 inch long with 35mm (~1 3/8 in) outer diameter, sleeves are 59 inch and 19.5 inch long with 37mm (~1 15/32 in) outer diameter. All together the parts wheight is 30 oz. This should bring some strength into the wing.

Furthermore I ordered a custom landing gear from WABO (http://www.ts-modelltechnik.de/main/wwwwabo-fahrwerkede.html). It will contain the same main gear legs to be mounted on the retract slide board, but these boards will be operated by servos. The nose gear will also be operated electrically by a sail winch in combination with a specially threaded mechanic. More details when I get the plans.

I finally got noticed that my wood kit from Larry (PCK) has arrived at German customs. Next Wednesday I will pick it up and check its content.
Update follows.

Finally the kit from Larry has arrived! As well as the nacelles from Dan (www.details4scale.com). Very nicely made, both.

Now I will check the content of the kit and then I can start building at last. I feel like Christmas somehow...

I decided to use an invisible aileron steering, so I bought a set of RDS (Rotary Drive System) from Ober Modellbau (www.oberflugmodellbau.de). Looks really strong but is a real light wheight. And should work very well as it is often used in F3B and F3F models.

I will see.

Hey fellow C130 Hercules build junkies. I'm looking to see if anyone that has built this plane using the servo operated fowler flap plans. Would it be possible to get a copy of the article from one of the people that have used it while building there Hercules. I'm just getting ready to start my build and want to use that for the flaps on my 132" wingspan C130. Please contact me by either PM or thru this forum. I know it's a few years old but I sent some pm messages and haven't heard back yet so I'm hoping I will get a reply back from someone that has done that mod and wouldn't mind sharing the article with me.

Try checking into the Wingspan Models B-17 build threads on RCSB. There are some very detailed descriptions of implementing Fowler Flaps. You should be able to adapt your build based on the techniques they describe. You will have to join RCSB in order to search the B-17 threads for Fowler flaps but you will get all the information you will need.

Hope this helps. My aborted build of the Palmer 132" C-130 was quite an experience. I finally concluded that it was way too big for me to transport.

Good luck on the build and do start a thread.

I haven't been on RCU for some time and was surprised how many of you builders were interested in my Fowler Flap design (adapted from an article in MAN magizine. I will be sending mlang1321 a copy now that I have his email address.

Also soundfan in Germany has been asking for a copy of the article too. If he will send me his email address in a private message I will be happy to email it to him.

I have lots of construction pictures that I am willing to share with anyone interested. Just let me know what part of the aircraft you are interested in seeing how I did it. I made many, many of my parts out of fiberglass myself. My wings are covered with .010 in.thk fiberglass sheet. I find it is lighter and stronger than balsa covered with fiberglass cloth, then primered and painted. With fiberglass sheet one coat of primer and paint the color on. I found it to be approx. 30 to 50% lighter. Just don't try to bend it in two different directions. Works best on flat sections like wings, stab, flaps, etc. I made my entire wing fillet our ot fiberglass cloth. Both top and bottom-one piece. No mold, just post board paper masking tape and clear packing tape! I used this method on several parts.

I hope these bits of experience help some of you.

Yes, my ramp was operable as were the air deflector's for the exit doors to protect parachutes. Full lights, the works!

Hey Mike,

Great to see you getting on board build this beautiful model, did you bought the kit from Joe Dennis?. I'm also very happy to see this thread is still going on and guys are still building these Palmer 132" C-130s, not a easy kit to build with so many issues with these plans that one really have to think forward couple of steps while building these. I have moved on to different projects, currently I'm working on Rouch 1:16th scale DC10, 1:12th Concorde, 1:9th scale Twin Otter. C-130 is one of those planes that I will tackle later on, probably build it from my own partial design and partially from this thread down the road. I'm also planning on building 1:16th scale Antonov AN-225 "Mirya".....

Sam;

Sorry to advise you but I am not Mike. I don't know where he is or what he is doing. Oltimer response to Mr. Lang's question was submitted to him by me, Frank Kagele.

Regards, Frank
