The New Duellist 2/60 is here! (almost)
Gentlemen:
In 1977, when Dave Platt regained control of the company that bore his name, he released the Duellist 2/30 kit. and said the Duellist 2/60 would be released the following year.
The Duellist 2/30 had its name changed to Duellist 2/40, but the “60” sized airplane was never released.
Until now.
The Duellist 2/60 finally is available, but by subscription only.
With Dave Platt’s permission our design group, headed by Ernest Fleming, has resized the Duellist Mk II to an 86” wingspan, incorporating all the improvements Dave Platt has made in the design since 1977.
Comparison of specifications, all dimensions in inches.
Version_______2/40 Mk II_____2/60 Mk II
Wingspan:________69__________86.25
Length:__________57__________71.25
Root chord:_______15__________18.75
Tip chord:_______9.81__________12.27
Wing area:_______856__________1338
Engine_________30-46_________56-90
The Duellist 2/40 Mk I was mostly the same size as the Mk II, differing mainly in a shorter wingspan and slightly less vertical fin/rudder area.
You may wish to review the thread “Pica Duellist” for our history.
Additional changes include lightening holes in the formers and wing ribs, a two-piece wing, for which the wing tube and socket are included, and provision for wing flaps. It can also be built with full span ailerons.
There is no provision for fixed landing gear, although it can be built that way.
All parts are laser cut. The needed stock wood stringers, spars, and sheet stock are included.
As people building an airplane of this sort usually have their own preferences in hardware, none is included.
The enlarged plans sheet is included.
In summary, this package will include all necessary wood, the wing joiner tube and socket, and the plans. Nothing else.
We do not recommend this airplane for a first time builder.
We are not a commercial enterprise. Most of us have built and flown the Duellist 2/40, this is our way to get the larger version at the least cost to ourselves. The cost of the kit will be the actual price of the materials to our group, with the kit cutter’s scanning, set-up, and miscellaneous charges divided equally among the kits sold. There will also be an amount paid to Dave Platt; again this cost will be shared equally. Finally, a charge for Mr. Fleming’s time and expenses will be apportioned.
Projected price is $150 to $170, final price will depend on the number ordered.
You will not be asked to commit to purchase until all costs are finalized.
If interested, you may post comments and questions here, or E-mail/PM to me. I will answer all queries, either in open forum or in the same manner you contacted me.

Hello SD Club Members and Other Interested Parties (OIPs)
I'll post pictures of the plans, with some comment on modifications that may apply. I'll make the photo's as leglible as possible. Give me about 72 hrs to get the film processed.

You want a hot Duellist, get a pair of hot .46~.50 sized engines and run pipes.

That's cheaper than I was thinking....put me down for 2 instead of only one.

Heheh....what's better than One? TWO!!
Hey I like that idea.
There will also be an amount paid to Dave Platt; again this cost will be shared equally. Finally, a charge for Mr. Fleming’s time and expenses will be apportioned.
Projected price is $150 to $170, final price will depend on the number ordered.
Bill!
Time to get serious.
Please, change my commitment of One to Two on the initial order.
Think I'll ace a brace while I can.
or
One to try and One to fly!
TIA
Cheers

I’ve attached a picture of my Duelist that I’ve been flying the last 2 years. I am having a blast with this plane. It was interesting and challenging to build and the flying excitement never ends. Even after 50+ flights my heart rate still goes up on every takeoff! And usually SOMETHING happens on every flight that notches up the excitement meter even higher. Here are a few random thoughts about my plane that may be of interest:
- Kit was built per the plans and instructions except I used 48 inch long sheeting for the fuselage instead of the spliced 36-inch pieces supplied with the kit. Easier to build and makes for a smoother, stronger, more continuous skin. Also, I used rectangular blocks on the rear portion of the nacelles instead of the triangular blocks in the kit to improve the looks.
- Covered it with Monokote
- Used single servo for ailerons and single servo with bellcranks for throttles (per the plans)
- Installed Spring Air retracts (strong and reliable, easy to install). I also added a fairing to the nose gear wheel well opening. The opening is huge and not clean aerodynamically. The fairing covers area not needed for the gear to pass through and is removable for gear maintenance.
- Dry weight is 11 lbs., including 8 ounces of lead in the tail.
- Used 8 ounce fuel tanks in each nacelle
- Initially had Tower 46’s installed but went to OS 46’s last summer. The Tower’s really pulled the plane fast, but I had difficulty getting them to run consistently. Had 6 engine failures, 2 of which resulted in slight damage to the plane. Since going to the OS’s the plane is a little slower, but I haven’t had a failure in 35+ flights.
- I use 10-8 props, and go through them like crazy. If you land slightly wing down with this plane, the prop will hit the runway.
Things I’d do different if I ever build another:
- I’d lengthen the landing gear. This is the one annoying feature this plane has. The short gear makes operating off a grass field a challenge, although it can be done. I usually have someone hold the plane back while I run up the engines, then have them let it go. This minimizes the ground run. I also hold a little back stick to keep the nose up during the takeoff run.
- I’d do a better job of hollowing out the balsa blocks forward of the CG (particularly the nose block) to improve the balance and save some weight. I got lazy with this one as construction time was long, and I didn’t expect the plane to last this long.
- I’d add flaperons. This plane lands fast and could use some help getting slowed down. I say flaperons and not flaps as I wouldn’t want to give up the propwash over the ailerons – it has saved the plane a few times when I botched takeoffs (rotated too soon, got the plane nose high and stalled) and was still able to maintain roll control and pull it out.
- I’d use a throttle servo in each nacelle for each engine. The single servo bellcrank linkage is a pain to install and is buried in the wing if something goes wrong with it.
Great thread! I wish I had read this stuff before I built mine!

I covered the plane with monokote. The blue is regular Royal Blue, as I had some left over from another project. Metalic blue would've looked great! The green is Metalic Green. Thanks for the comments - a lot of people don't think green and blue go together, but heck, it works for the Seattle Seahawks.....!
On the bottom of the wing I used florescent yellow instead of the white, and put big Metallic Green stars in the middle of it. This plane can get pretty far away in a hurry so it helps to have something really different on the bottom.

You are on, gentlemen.
Sorry it took so long to ack, had a virus get past my firewall, took about an hour to clear it.
Warning to all: this virus came either from HKNet, or the "Tucows" site. After I did a download from Tucows I could not reboot - message was "NT Loader missing."
I am running Win2K Pro with ALL the updates. If your operating system is different you may not be vulnerable. My firewall is from NetScape, McAfee "Viruscan."
Virus writers inhale vigorously,
. Firewalls must watch rigorously.

Sorry, I was fretting about the misbegotten sons of women of ill repute who get their cookies by writing viruses, I missed your question.
We are still looking at late April for the shipping date.
Thanks.
If all virus writers were castrated,
. Would I feel less irritated?
