onboard glow for Cessna 310, Saito 300
I've just ordered a Cessna 310 from TopFlite. I'd like to use some 4C enginges. For added safety from flame-outs I'd like to add an on board glow system. Can any one recommend something they have actually used. I also have a Saito 300 twin. It would be nice it the system was hot enought to light the plugs on this too. Sort of a multi use system. Thanks

Try this web site http://sonictronics.com/xcart/customer/home.php. It is for McDaniels glow drivers. I have used their glow driver on a Supertigre G .90 without any problems. If you don't see exactly what you want, call them. They have always been helpful whenever I needed to talk to them.

Here's what I use on my twin http://electrodynam.com/rc/EDR-103/index.shtml He - Andy Low - also has http://electrodynam.com/rc/EDR-103M/index.shtml for multicylinder engines. I have had nothing but complete success with any products that Andy makes. He's an avid flyer, including turbines, helicopters, electrics, etc. and really knows his stuff. He's also always got a well stocked booth at Toledo (toward the back) and offers discounts there.

I used the EMS/Jomar on a 300T before. It has a single 5,000mAH battery and nice locking plug caps. Optical isolated so never an interfence like you sometimes get in the other brands. I am using them on my 138" ws B17G Bomber.

irwina,
If you want to use the "Twin Sync" to keep the engines in sync, you can get it with glow drivers included, I think it's only about $10 more.

I set up a friends C160 with the TwinSync with onboard glow drivers and it worked great. Only a few dollars more and you get a complete syncro, glow driver, failsafe, and more system. The glow drivers worked flawlessly and the TwinSync saved the airplane on the first flight when we lost an engine.

Thanks Bob... looks kinda nice. I almost wish I haden't gotten mine already but I have had a perfect track record with the EMS. They have a synch device too but not with the integral glow driver.

Good luck with the plane Irwin... I would love to have a big twin Cessna like that. What engines are you going to use in it? I love the sound of that Saito, I think they sound like small Harley engines myself! I used one of them in an Aerobatic plane and it just didn't have the power we were expecting so he ended putting a DA 50 in it. We tried three brands of glow drivers, he had the 300T that had dual glow plugs and it was still a terrible idle without a glow driver. We got one from Horizon that was the worst, caused terrible noise issues in the JR RX wherever we put in that plane, the McDaniels did nearly the same thing so we tried the EMS/Jomar Dual driver and it worked like a charm plus it was installed about 3" from the RX. I have used them since in planes with FM and PCM receivers of all brands and just love their reliability and they get the plugs the right temp. If the big battery is a bit too low at the end of the day, you get a glow plug adapter so you can use your portable glow plug heater on it to boost the battery and has a real nice charging jack that can be mounted anywhere in the plane and charger as well. Like I said earlier I am using two dual glow drivers from EMS on my big B17 I trust them so much and I have a good $6500+ in that plane so far.

You know how it is in the hobby. I've got two NIB OS 46's that were purchased for other projects that didn't get done. They are the obvious choice for the 310. I also have a OS 72 FS and a brother with the same engine. We often do joint projects, so if they will fit , I expect it will be the 72's. I purchased the Saito 300, single carb, a few years back after seeing them at QUSSA in Vegas. It's NIB. Had wondered what it might do in a GP Christen Eagle that is engine less at the moment. I'm intersted in aerobatics but not 3-D so it might work. Kind of favoring gas? Which is why the plane is engineless at the moment. Spring is coming.

I think you are right about it being good for that plane if you don't want to do 3D. After break in you can get quite a bit more power from them I have heard. I have a 27% Extra 260 and use the DA-50 in it and that engine is just super in all aspects. It has 5hp, swings a 23" prop and starts effortlessly. If you decide to do some better aerobatics I would see if the DA-50 would fitin the plane. I believe 50cc's is equalt to 3 cubic inches so they are close in size and you have a ton of power in the DA.
I envy your 310 project. I learned how to fly in a Cessna 152 when I was young and have a love for Cessna's. I flew a 172 after getting my ticket but had to give up flying the big stuff after medical issues. I built the TF 182 Skymate and it came out beautiful but I tried to fly it with a G-26 which was too heavy and I never converted it to glow. I did sell it for a good price though. Good luck with the Christen Eagle as well as the Cessna!

It's funny how all of us are the same. I wanted to be a professinal pilot when I was a kid but ended up with glasses. Later in the early 80's got my Private licence on 172's. Still fly a bit with friends but mostly RC. Some of the guys here use the DA 50 and are very happy with it. Regarding getting your licence. I started with control line when I was a kid at 15 I got a single channel and a Goldberg skylane. A few years later Royal came out with their proportional and I'd been RC ever since. When I did go for my license, a friend was the instructor. He couldn't beleive how well I did. I told him that if I could fly and land a plane that I wasn't in, it was a lot easier with all the guages and air speed indicator. Have been to Tucson a few times over the year and really like it there. Great Air Museum on the S side of town.

RE: onboard glow for Cessna 310, Saito 300
Good story. I had a woman instructor that was a tiny little thing. She fit great in the 152 but I had a bit of time. She was an excellent instructor and pilot however. I really liked the 172, a bit underpowered but I heard they came out with a version that had a bigger engine. The last time I flew I wanted to take my new wife up but she was afraid to go up "in that little thing", hehehe! I got sick right after that, about 20 years ago and have not been able to fly since. I lost all the hearing in one ear and my eyesight is terrible now as well. I take meds that can cause seizures so FAA took the ticket. I was in and out of R/C trying to teach myself (since I was a pilot these little toy planes should be cake!) and after crashing a hundred times I joined a club and learned how to fly. Been at it ever since, the illness perm. disabled me so it's a great hobby for that reason as well. I was trying to fly R/C planes when I was taking flying lessons and my instructor told me to stop (I wasn't succesful at flying one for more than one short hop into fences and such) but now I understand now why she said that. It's really hard for most full scale pilots to learn how to fly R/C. That control reversal is so unatural compared to full scale. I tell my wife she could fly a Cessna without taking any lessons it's so natural and easy, it's those dang rules and regs you have to know and follow. Good talking to you. Post some photo's of your planes when you can, I would love to see them (models).

Guys,
I have a new product getting ready for field test. An onboard glow plug driver. Let me know if you are interested in being a beta/field tester (1/2 price and free upgrade to production version when available). I completely understand though if you only want tried and tested.

Hi Bill,
I bought the Twin Sync from you but didn't get it with the glow drivers as I didn't know I was going to mount my Saito 82's inverted. So now I think I would be interested. What is the difference in your new glow drivers versus getting them for the twin sync? I would be willing to Beta test them for you.
