Hawkeye E-2C 1/12th = 80" wingspan scale electric
Hi guys
I thought I will share my latest project with you. It is going to be a long job, but - I am not in a hurry... I was involved with the real think back in 1976 while serving in the Israeli Airforce, and I thought this will be a nice challenge...
The pictures enclosed will tell a better story than any words could do.
One picture shows the blue foam slices glued together, the next shows the end result nose which I will use to form the fiber glass nose, the others should be self explanatory...
Cheers
Alex

Alex,
Nice!
I worked on the E-2C's from 1989 - 1992. Lots of changes since we worked on/with them . Digital flight deck T-56-427 engines
Where are you getting the patterns for the fuse bulkheads?

RE: Hawkeye E-2C 1/12th = 80
OK guys,
It's been a LONG trip.... TWO years in the making, but she finally was up in the sky on the 7th of April 2010
Below are some links to YouTube with flight video clips
Anyone wants to ask some direct questions - please drop me a line at : [email protected]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqW5E_FyyFE – Taking off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtapoazDWsk – Flying around and landing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGZPBHkz9Ng – After landing…
And some DATA
AUP = 6.6Kg => 233 oz => 14.4lb
Wing Span = 80”
Wing area: 4,850 sq / cm = 5.2 sq / f
Wing loading => 44 Oz / sq.ft = 134 g/sq/d (HEAVY…)
Estimated Speed stall = Sq/r (41) x 4 = 25MPH in level flight
Motor / prop Turnigy 4250-700 / 11x 6, 4 blade Zinger propeller
On a 4S – 4000 m/ah 30C LiPo pack (x 2)
7500 RPM a full throttle, 660 Watts and 2.5 Kg static thrust – each motor
660 x 2 / 14.4 = 92 watts / lb
Cheers

Beautiful and very obscure n unique project!. This is 3rd Hawkeye RC model i have seen so far in my full RC Carrier!!!....Congrats on maiden....
How come wing loading is so heavy?
Does Rotodome act as flying surface and what is the angle of incidence it's mounted on?
How did you guys do CG on it, did you had to all lots of nose weight?
(Sorry for asking too many questions at once, i want to do one of my GWS C130s as US Coast Guards AWACS version)

Hello,
I don’t mind any questions, glad to explain anything you are interested in. I know of only one other chap – Mike Ulkowsky in the USA that constructed a 100” wingspan E2C, and managed to take off – once in 2006 but crashed shortly after takeoff, which I don’t consider it a “flight”.
I researched this topic and couldn’t find any one else that has successfully flown an E2C RC model, I will be happy if you can point me to the right direction.
I do believe however that mine is the first Electric Powered, if not the 1st…
C.G – I followed the instructions on the plan – which shows the aft most position of the C.G of the full size, and balanced it half an Inch forward of the point. I didn’t have to add any artificial “dead weight” to the nose. Flying electric means that I can use the batteries for balancing – which is exactly what I did. I constructed a long tray in the nose – from about where the LE is forward, and was able to position the flight batteries just under the air intake on top of the cabin, which also provides cooling for the flight pack.
The Rotodome is definitely part of the equation. It is positioned with a 2 degree negative angle (same concept as the top wing of any Bi-Plane) so that it gets to a stall point only AFTER the wing does. The wing loading is calculated without accounting for it, but if anything, I am sure it reduces the figure I calculated.
Well, if you can point me to where else can I see information about another RC E2C I will appreciate it. If you have more questions – fire away. I trust the lakes around your place are pretty…
Cheers

Good Morning Alex,
You are right, other one is in US and was Mike's that saw it's fate right after the takeoff
unfortunately.
So that makes your Hawkeye 2nd and after your model, 3rd one was/is ARF electric model
offered by Will Hobbies as one was for sale RTF few months ago on another RC site. Not sure if
W/Hobbies is still offering Hawkeye or not but it was good coz no otherARF or kits of this model
are available unless it's scratch built.
Here are specs and pictures form the for sale Ad.
E-2C Hawkeye E-Plane
Ready to fly.
Wingspan 74.4"
Length 56"
6 x Servos, 2 x Motors Turnigy Outrunners 450W,
NEW Li-po Battery 10.000Mah 20C,
2 x 80A ESC including 5A BEC,
So that's how i know only 3 Hawkeye models in existence, now your model is the only one so far that flew and flew good . I'm not sure what Mike did with his model as i remember he mentioned to rebuilt it but i don't think it happened and then he has been away in Afghanistan due to work.

RE: Hawkeye E-2C 1/12th = 80
Hi Sam,
I heard in the past that there was a kit offered by someone in China, but all attempts to get some info from them ended with nothing.
That infor of the add, where is it? Who sells it?
Hope you can give me a hint. The photos you provided have tw first impresion problems
1) There are only 3 vertical fins, should be 4
2) The nose wheel is too high, placing the ground position in a funny angle...
Thanks again
Alex

Alex,
I don't have much info on the ARF model either.
Yes it's missing a fin and nose is on higher AOA for some reason.
According to old ad, it's "Will Hobbies" model, so look up Will hobbies and see what you can find.
Personally speaking, it looks cartoonish to me, specially full forward fuselage, but that's my opinion only.
At one time i was interested in doing this model but not anymore.

RE: Hawkeye E-2C 1/12th = 80
Hi Sam,
Yes, it looks all plastic... Do you know of anyone who boght and flew this?
The wight as advertised on the web site looks fantastic, but is it just the model, or AUW with motors etc... Who know?
I am facing now a problem after the maiden flight. The run for takeoff was too slow in my mind (7500 RPM on an 11x6 4 blade prop does have enough power), in flight it was OK, but on our "Grass" (very bad) runway - it was not happy, as you can see from the take off video clip.
I have 2 options, replace the LiPo 4S with 5S, and the ESC with larger ones, to give it all another 20% power (I also have 12 x 6 4 blade props), and do it on the same motors, but this will be stretching the motors beyond the recommended specs. Or - replace the above and the motors to something bigger - which will add weight to my already heavy model...
I have to keep thinking about it.
Cheers
Alex

RE: Hawkeye E-2C 1/12th = 80
I have been flying my Will hobby Hawkeye for almost 2 years now. The ones they sell now are based off my paint layout that I sent them during my build. I tried to help them by putting a instruction manual together and they were going to send me a second kit. But instead they ripped me off, copied my paint and never got back to me. There are a lot of issues with the kit and you MUST make sure the DOME is at the correct position or it will not fly correctly. It acts almost a second wing so check that incidence before you fly. I have pictures of mine in my gallery here on RCU. I did full robart retracts as well. I have some video of it flying some place I will try to dig it out.

Hello there Gotsky,
Mine is scratch built from plans, nothing to do with the factory ARF one, and yes - my dome is positiond at -2 degrees as per the real thing, and flies very nice (twin electric of course).
Below are the links to my clips of the maiden flight on the 7th of April 2010

Very nice. Here is a short one of mine. Its not that great and the camera lens is very dirty. I lost my left wheel rubber on landing due to a hard set down but all was ok This is the 2nd flight on mine
