just a quick little visit to the club.. been slacking off a bit the past few days... trying to get some flying in.. grand kids etc... but the retracts are finished in the main wing and ready to bolt in .. dry fitting one of the new carbon fiber wing tubes to see what room I have for the flap servo.. and as you can see in the pic.. I have re-designed the flaps to be split now..

As for power.. I have a GP stearman at about 15 lbs.. with a 30cc ... and this bird is going to be somewhere around 32 lbs.. so twice the weight and twice the power..

Another answer as to the power requirement.. I found this video , and just after the guy lands he says the engines are RCGF 26cc... lots of power... better to have it and not need it.. than to not have it and need it..

Things have changed a lot since this thread was started back on 3/27/2009, the prices of everything seems to have
gotten a lot higher than in the beginning. Just thought I would throw some figures forward as to what it would cost
to build the Bud Nosen Cessna 310-G model be if from a full kit or from a short kit and fiberglass parts that are
available. So here goes: Short kit available on E-Bay $255 with shipping from 2 different cutters, fiberglass parts
( wing tip tanks, engine cowling & nacelles) from G & L Hobbies $125, Greg also has a fiberglass fuselage $150,
or the complete package deal @ $275 plus shipping. Retractable landing gear from Robart (Air Type) Tri-Gear
Approx. $875 or Electric Actuated $910 plus shipping. Engines 20cc single cylinder $480 and up, 20cc twin cylinder
$640 and up, 30 twin cyl. $740 and up depending on the brand you chose, Radio Gear, RX + 10 servos depending
on brand, $400 and up, plus approximately another $400 for supplies ie glue, balsa wood, plywood, fiberglass & wing
tubes. So if you add it all up you are putting forth a nice little sum of money to build one of these beauties, not to mention
the time involved, approx. 4 months or longer. All of mine have taken me approximately 9 months plus, as I was working
back then, being retired now if I decided to build another I could probably do it in 4 months putting in 6 hours a day, 5
days a week, that's close to 700 hours of work.

That's a whopping sum of approximately: $2,800 +

So if you love to build like I do go for it!!!!!!!

Bill D.

P.S. Now that I am into it again there may be another 310 in my near future, only time will tell.
got to down size my flying fleet and finish my current 2 builds to do it though.

For anyone wishing to contact Greg from G & L Hobbies, please do it via e-mail as he
is now only molding fiberglass parts on a limited schedule due to his now busy schedule
of running the family grocery business, He will answer you quickly and give you an
approximate time in which he can produce the parts for the Cessna 310 you wish to
order, so plan ahead if you want to order the parts you wish him to make for you.
His email is: [email protected]

Thanks,
Bill D.

Not bad for a giant scale plane. Typical giant scale ARF is close to 3K.

Plus labor, are you kidding!!!!!, We don't charge labor on these beautiful creations, we do it for the love of
this hobby and no one would ever pay you what it actually cost labor wise to build model airplanes, especially
this big monster!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol..... He said " Plus Labor " .
Labor of love for models . No labor - as in not even paid enough to even buy lunch . I find it difficult to get people to even pay for the cost of materials , they always want a steal of a deal .

I would like to introduce another new member to the BN Cessna 310 Club:
# 78 Steakman from Florida. Jump on in here and say howdy to the
group.

Thanks for the email with your thoughts on powering the BN Cessna 310,
I think you will find that anything bigger than a 30 will cause the engine
cowls to be butchered up considerably, and is way more power than is
needed for this twin. Also don't think you will have enough room in the
engine bay for the EME 35's with the electric starters, although that would
be a nice touch to the aircraft.

I have installed 2.0 Brison Sachs engines (33cc) using throttle coupled ignition (love them) and did not have to hack the cowls (Fiberglass Specialties) any with plenty of room around the engines. Mine are mounted at approximately 7:00 position (head facing down) which allows the Soundmaster mufflers to go under the cowls/ nacelles approximately 1/4 inch away from the surfaces. I did remove a bit of material from the faces of the timing rings so they did not rub the back of the cowls. Yes; I do know that I could replace the CH coupled ignitions with RCXel easily but for any of you that have used properly set coupled ignitions, there is NO better.

Well I think I finally figured out how it is done..

The Bud Nosen kits are all giant scale .. and yet the engine spec"s seem to be grossly under rated for the size and weight of the model.. like my 310g.. for a ten foot winged marvel such as it .. to fly on a pair of 60 2 strokes.. would in my mind be amazing..

Until I got into reading some old RCM articles.. then I ran across an ad in the one magazine..

this may explain how it was done..

Yep.............Found one in Lafayette, LA. the guy wanted a lot more than what the kit was really worth.
When I opened the box before I purchased it, half of the parts were missing, he said he purchased it
as a complete kit off of "Fleece-Bay" a couple years back, never went through the kit to check it out.
Most of the wing ribs and half of the fuselage formers were missing. Evidently he didn't have a clue
as to what he was getting into, never inventoried what he bought.........So he went down kicking and
swearing when I offered him $75 for the box of "balsa wood sheeting and strips. Told him no deal for
what he was asking and headed back to my truck, he finally saw the light and took what I offered. As
for me I really should have walked away as I really didn't need more balsa, got a rack full now as it is.
So I will be ordering the laser cut parts from the guy on E-Bay.

Did an inventory of the kit I bought and just about all of the wood is useless, either too hard or too soft,
as for the fuselage formers and wing ribs, only about one quarter of what should have been there, no wing
tubes, no cowls, plans were pretty much worthless, I paid about 3 times more than I should have for this
mess...........So anyone buying a kit for one of these beasts, make sure it is complete before handing over
your hard earned dollars.

I'll be holding off on building another one for a few months, as I have 3 unfinished projects that I need to
complete before moving on to the 310.

Hi all, just checking in with my first post as new member #77. Have been working on my winter project (could not wait) since June 21st the first day of summer. I have half of the wing framed, added carbonfiber wing tubes and added flaps. I have messaged a couple members about formers for the G&L fuse that Greg is sending me but no response yet. If anyone has a copy I would like to get a set. I will try to post some progress pictures soon. Thanks Bill for getting me in as a member.

The formers for the G & L fiberglass fuselage are the same as those in the kit. You will also need to build the crutch
as it adds a tremendous amount of strength to the fuselage. It doesn't need to be out of spruce or basswood, balsa
wood is fine for this, once the crutch is inside the fuselage the formers can be slid into place for support. You will be
able to install most of the formers inside the fuse from the opening for the wing, dry fit everything before applying any
epoxy and adjust anything that needs to be. You may find that you will have to remake a new former or two but I think
you will find that most will fit with very few gaps here and there. The last 310 I had this is what I was doing and everything
was fitting very good, but I had to abandon and sell the fiberglass fuselage 310 project before completed due to health
reasons. Once all is installed to your liking and is fitting good then epoxy everything in place and use fiberglass tape
for a little extra surface adhesion. The cabin area can be void of all formers once all is epoxied in place with the exception
of the crutch as you will need it's strength for the nose retract, but it could very easily hidden if you chose to go all out on
a detailed interior.

Good luck with the project and post some photos of your progress.

Thanks Bill for that valuable information. I did buy the lazer cut kit and it is well worth it. I tried to post a picture but it says I need 10 posts before I am allowed. Is there a way around that?
Thanks Dan

Thank you Bill for posting the progress on my 310 build. I installed carbonfiber wing tubes and spread them a little to make room for retracts. My plan is to light it up with navigation, anti collision strobes and landing lights. For engines looking at RCGF
30cc or 40cc twins, both will fit into cowls. Getting a fuse set from G&L soon.will keep working to get more pictures.

Could you please give me the source for the carbon fiber tubes, as I need some
that are telescopic for another project I am currently trying to finish up.

Thanks,
