RE: Lancaster Bomber
nice pic. I have one coming from Conachen. It has a 138 Inch WS
Is yours scratch built, it looks great What are you using for power I plan on using 4 OS 46 FXs I'd like to know more about your plane |
RE: Lancaster Bomber
My lanc is scratch build from Chris golds plans out of the UK. It has a 90in span, weighs about 10 lbs as you see it. I am planning to power it with .25's. It recommends .19's however .25 seems like a better option. It does not have retracts and is fitted with flaps. I statred last Nov, I am at the stage of panel lines and rivets. It is costructed mainly of foam, sheeted Balsa, and fibreglassed. This is my first fibreglassing job and I am happy with the results. I think when it is complete, I will be to scared to fly it. LOL. I will post more pick as the detailing improves.

RE: Lancaster Bomber
That cool,
I have one in my loft converted to a manchester with two OS .52 surpasses and it flew great, just like a trainer. Retired it this year because it's been flying for 19 years strong! Good luck, Alan |
Lancaster Bomber
Alan:
I am curious regarding the flying characteristics of this model. The airfoil is nice and thick with an almost flat bottom. I have set the engine pods with the offset instructions on the plans. Does this compensate for the thrust enough, or did you have to increase the thrust angles of the engines? I was also wondering if the C of G as per the plans is good. Did you have to add much weight to the nose to balance your Lanc? I am not at that stage as of yet however and curious about it. What engines did you use before you converted it? I am sure if I do use four .25 engines there should be plenty of power. Can you give me a few other characteristics regarding its flight performance? Are the rudders effective during ground run ups and in flight? Do the flaps enhance the stability at low speeds and is there much change in the attitude of the plane when flaps are lowered? Also on the plans it states that the ailerons should both be positioned 1/4 inch above the trailing edge when centred on the radio. Did you do this when you flew yours? I know I have several questions regarding the lancaster. Hope you do not mind. I have put quite a bit of work into it so far, don't want to loose her due to a small error. Thanks for responding to my previous post. Craig |
RE: Lancaster Bomber
Hi,
The other engines are only angled to compensate for a engine loss in flight. If you loose an engine you need to be quick to close the the opposite inner/outer. I suggest that you do not try to fly it without twin throttles (inner pair and outer pair). The plans indicated CG is fine. You will probally need some lead in the nose. Mine flew with four old OS .25's (Pre FP) and this is enough power. It would be great with .26/.30 four strokes. Set each engine for individual reliability and ignore trying to match RPM's. Reliability is way more important! The rudders do not "bite" very well untill the model has got some ground speed. Other wise it is like a trainer to fly in flight. You must keep power on for landing or the elevatior lacks effect. I never had flaps in my Lancaster/Manchester so I do not know what that would be like. I never had the ailerons raised, they was always inline with the wing. My dad flew a scaled up version of this Lancaster (12 foot span). He wrote an article on how it flew and its demise on my club website (sorry about the ads, tripod ruined the site): http://corsairmfc.tripod.com/lancaster.htm Hope that helped, Alan |

Lancaster update.
I have completed all the panel lines and rivets on the Lancaster. Have not counted the rivets but I will, just to see how many I actually put on. Just finished counting, 14,938 rivets. That is alot of glue drops. I used 264 feet of panel line tape. Took a while but it is well worth the extra effort. I dusted the entire plane with alluminum paint which will allow the rivets to show through when I weather. Next is to cam it up, put on the markings, and weather. Still have not purchased the engines, but that can be done at a later date. I have attached four pics. Craig |

Thanks Nony.
I have completed the Cam on the top of the wing and on the top of the fuselage. I used document folders with small rolls of masking tape to secure the cardboard to the surface. The distance was about 1/8th of an inch from the surface. The feathering turned out very nice. This system does work well when using paint from a spray can. Next I need to paint the underside of the main wing, fuselage sides and bottom as well as the verticle fins. I have attached some pics of the cam job. Hope all viewers like tie pictures. Craig. |
RE: Lancaster Bomber
Man, that is looking real nice Craig.....what field do you plan to fly out of ??

RE: Lancaster Bomber
Great job and fantastic write up. Drool does not quite cover this.
Good Luck, Twinman |

Nony, Twinman thanks for the comments.
I usually fly at the ERCS North field. I am sure it is big enough for the Lanc. That day will sure be a knee knocker. I was playing with an airbrush today on my sample piece. I am working on the Rounells. I read about using low tack kitchen pantry shelf liner material for the templates. So I tried it and it worked well. The blue colour is insignia blue, and the red is just some old red Testors that I had. When I do the actual red I will use insignia red. It turned out not to bad. The method I used was to place it on the surface, using a compass with a exacto knife in one end, I just created a circle cutting through the material. It worked well, however I was not satisfied with the needle mark in the centre. I filled it just prior to applying the red. I will use another method I read about. Using Saran Wrap over the hole with the centre marked on the Saran Wrap and the centre point marked on the surface of the model. Match up the centre points and press into location. This should work a lot better, besides if you are not happy with the circle cut, you can always cut another one. Still lots to do, thanks for following this thread. Cool man, Can't wait!

RE: Lancaster Bomber
Looks great man, can't wait till Im at that stage in flying skil. The LAnc is one of my all time favourite warbirds. Oh yeah, bout the two throttle things. Would they be stepped- such as a switch with idle, medium, high- as there arn't two throttle sticks on the TX.And if you ever need a home for that lanc, I am just an email away!
Thanks, signing off |

Oh yeah, bout the two throttle things. Would they be stepped- such as a switch with idle, medium, high- as there arn't two throttle sticks on the TX. On our next lanc we will use a Sanwa Stylus because that has a nice "slider" channel on the top left side of the TX. You could use a 3 possition switch I guess but I prefere proportional control. RE: Lancaster Bomber
your lanc looks awesome. where do you get panel line tape. I can remember seeing it somewhere , but can't remember where.
I got My Conachen Lanc kit in last week, .. a major winter project hope mine looks as good as your when finished. |

Still waiting for my Flat Black paint?? Progress has been slow due to the wait. However I did start thinking and working on the guns for the Lanc. What I used was some red bic pens. The barrels are made from the ink tube inside the pen. I cleaned them out using some pipe cleaners and they came out very clean. I then used an old punch that I had laying around to produce the flutted end of the barrels. I heated the punch up with a candle for about a minute then I forced it into the opening of the tube. It took a couple of tries to get the desired effect. I used the main pen shaft as my mount for the barrels. I drilled them out and am inserting the barrels into the pen. I grabbed a couple scrap pieces of 1/8th ply and made a mount for the pen, it can swivel up and down freely. This will be very easy to mount within the gun blisters. I am not going to have them actuated by radio. They will just sit there and can be manualy positioned. Only six more to produce. I will post more pics as the progress improves.

RE: Lancaster Bomber
Probably too late for you craig, but did you check out the prototype of the new lanc kit ? (they tell me it will be ready for Sandown (UK) by May). Cost ? the guy tells me less than £100 ($160).

Craig,
What a gorgeous airplane! |
RE: Lancaster Bomber
All I can say is wow! That is a work of art!

RE: Lancaster Bomber
Thanks guys. The pics Grahamd posted look almost exactly as to what I am building. There are not to many Lancasters out there at the flying fields. I am still waiting for my Flat Black paint. All this waiting is driving me nuts. OH well, more time will be spent on future projects. That is the only advantage of long cold winters. Can spend more time building. I will post more pics when progress continues.

Well, finally have the Black paint on, and I am very happy now. Just need it to sit a couple days before I can begin the weathering process. After it is dry I will post a few pics of it together as a complete airframe. I have attached a couple of pics of the black paint job. More pics to follow.
