I just found this old thread. Interesting! I really like the old Royal kits. I am rebuilding an already built Royal B-17. I bought it with 4- OS 40LA'salready installed. I got my equipment in it and flew it the way it was. It weighed about 16 pounds. With all that power I flew it with scale 3 blade props. I thought it tracked pretty good on the ground. I went to full power only once and it would hang on the props pointing strait up. I am a scale guy, so I wanted to make this one more scale. So I am currently rebuilding it.
Looks like I have picture problems again. Sorry no pics. Although I have been posting info on my B-17 on the Royal thread.

Hi!
Change the engines to four OS LA .15 and use 8x5 or possibly 9x4 props and you will have a much lighter plane that will fly better.

Ahh, I never said what I was changing the engines to. 4 OS .15CV's are already installed. They fit inside the cowls! Just a few more servos and the flite pak, but as it is right now it weighs 11 pounds.
I have a great picture just ready to post right here to show it. But RCUniverse and posting pictures are not working out for me anymore. Too bad. All the advice that I could get, but I can not show it. I could show the flaps I am working on. I could show The Robart retracts and struts that are already installed. I like to post pictures. It shows that you have actually done something.

I tried to make the struts a little more scale, but the mechanism was too much. So, it will have just simple struts.

There have been a couple nice Royal B-17's on this thread so far. I am trying to make mine nice too, but not get crazy with it. More pictures. The OS .15CV's fit INSIDE the cowls! And yes they will have more than enough power, unless you plan on B-17 pylon racing?
See the other plane? It is a stafford B-24. It weighs 14 pounds with a 90" span (Royal B-17 12 pounds 77"span). It was built in the late 1980's. It now has its third set of engines- OS .15CV's. They start right up and requre no adjustments. They have NEVER quit in flight! The last set of engines did a time or two. They were .15's also.
With the 14 pound B-24 I never go over half power even for take off. 10 minutes safe on 4 oz. tanks. Same as my B-17.
So, the OS .15CV's will be the PERFECT powerplant for the Royal B-17. .

I've spent about 5 months rebuilding this old bird. Changing out all 4 engines, sanding off most of the old paint, removing the over built fixed landing gear, adding Robart retracts and retractable tailwheel, flaps, and a few small details. It really helped getting the Royal B-17 plans and fiberglass cowls from uswing on Ebay. I was able to save the existing clear parts, windows and turrets.
I have just finnished priming and sanding the whole model and am ready for final paint and markings!

I need a set of retracts and fiberglass cowls...any body have a set they want to sell.

uswing on ebay sells fiberglass cowls. Any 12-14 pound 85deg retracts should work.
My Royal B-17 is finally done.

Nice, Pre G late F based before the chin turret was installed.

If you want to do a scale take off, keep the tail gear planted until the mains come up. The real B-17 pilots were taught to take off with weight on the tail gear. Reason being is that when the tail came up, it transferred weight to the mains and it took more runway to lift off then. That isnt the case with the models, but it looks scale when you do it.

What scale is that one? We will be building a 1/8th scale one, but it will be using stringers, ribs, and sheeting just like the real one we are rebuilding. The forward section nose to bulkhead 4 have been done so far.<br type="_moz" />

Thanks, I usualy come up slow and not use full power to take off and lots of up elevator to keep the tailwheel firmly planted untill the rudder is working good with the airflow. I have been watching B-17 footage to get an idea. Since I do not use bombers for contest work in my size, this one is fictitious. I was abel to gain points with the wife by making the nose art of her;)! I'll have to figure out the scale size one of these days. It must be around 1/14th or so.

By the way the nose glass from the Royal kit is B-17E. But the plans say B-17F.

I didn't get any pics closer to the nose. The F model does not have as much framework on the nose glass as an E model. The Squadron B-17 in action book shows it pretty good.

I'll get a picture tomorrow of the nose frame from a real E model when I am out working on bulkhead 3. We have it off to the side nearly restored minus the glass.

I flew my Royal B-17 today, after a 5 month rebuild. It was a little windy, and it was tail heavy. I was a little sloppy getting the C.G. right. A little rough on landing. Will report with pictures later. Well, here is one on the ground.

Too bad the right hand engines couldn't be flipped to bring the mufflers inboard.  That would give it a nice profile from either side, otherwise, sweet plane.

These days it is hard to find exaust accessories, such as parts to keep everything inside for engines this small. This model is set up for reliability and simplicity. It is a lot of fun to fly too! There may be a video comming soon.

I just wanted to say that even though Royal is gone, you can still build the B-17! The plans and instructions are on Ebay anytime. AND so are all the canopies and turrets. AND fiberglass cowls. This model is much less money than those GIANT B-17's And it looks pretty good. It will fit in most any car!

I flew my Royal b-17 over 60 times this past year (2012). Thanks to the Hobby King electric foamy B-17, there is a group in my area that flies them in formation. I have joined them and the Royal B-17 fits right in! We have got pretty good at it.
Here is a video that one of the squadron members made with an onbord camera. The Royal B-17 has use flaps to slow to their speed.

just gettin the partial built kit I bought out, and goin to start work.just started readin threads on the subject. have you come across any cockpit kits? what are you using for struts? first I have heard of this "header tank setup. hope you dont mind the questions. thankful for any help. thanks....bob

Here is the specs on mine. I bought it already built. Its basic construction was very good, but then someone else got ahold of it. It was only 4 channel no retracts or flaps. It had 4 OS .40LA's with tuned pipes. The aluminum cowls were so cut up there was little left of them. The 1/4" dia. fixed gear was mounted deep in the inner nacelles with a very heavy structure. It had huge tundra wheels and an equally large tail wheel. The inside of the wing was coated with epoxy. It had dings and holes all over it with black paint splotced on those areas to look like battle damage. The paint job looked like it came out of a comic book. He put solid 1/4" steel rod guns in all the gun stations. It wieghed 17 pounds. He flew it like a pylon racer and the landings were never pretty.
When I got it, I flew it twice in that configuration just to see if it flew good. It would hover pointing striaght up and came in real hot. But it did fly good.
So I started tearing it down. Everything came out, even that awful landing gear!
