Muffler for twin
 

What kind of mufflers are on this p-38? Looks like just the extension with no actual muffler? Any ideas?

One of the real early muffler systems to put on your own engine was a strap-on stack. It had small slits near the outer end to smooth the exhaust flow. They didn't work well. Open enough to let the engine run they didn't quiet anything, closed far enough to quiet the exhaust the engine didn't have any power. These look similar.

Squeeze them right down,
. Engine makes not a sound.
Open for a run that's tops,
. Neighbors call the cops.

Those are called tongue mufflers and are still quite popular with the controlline crowd and manufactured still by cottage industry. I still use several Dubro's on two Ukies and one on an RC ship. They do reduce the sound level measurably but not as much as a modern expansion type but find power loss not really an issue and in few cases even a slight power gain over some poorly designed expansion types.

As you can see they are wonderfull for a close cowled scale ship like what appears to be a Royal P-38 in your attachment. Do you know what it is?
