How much of a quality difference is there between the Dickie "Snow King", and the Kyosho Nitro Blizzard?

Stan (I think I've gotten stung on ebay)

I guess the Snow King would be classified as a toy, while the Blizzard earns a hobby quality rating. That being said, the Snow King is a solid machine, which easily withstood hours of snow driving earlier this year. Tracks slipped sometimes (tension not adjustable) but otherwise it ran flawlessly. It is quite a bit slower than the Blizzard.

Is the construction of the Blizzards chassis and wheels metal?
Does the Blizzards wheels have independent suspension?

I know the "Snow King" has unmovable wheels and as you said the
tracks have slack in them.

In your opinion, what is a good price for the "Snow King" ?

The "Snow King" uses a 27Mhz remote that does not have much range,
and the motors do not appear to be replaceable.

Are the tracks of similar construction?

Thanks for your great Help,

Stan

The electric Blizzard came in two versions. The original twin 380 motor, plastic tub chassis (Graupner Pisten Bully, The Blizzard, Blizzard DX, Blizzard Monster Tank), and the updated single 550 motor, aluminum plate chassis (Blizzard EV) that was shared by it's brother, the Nitro Blizzard.

The bogey wheels on all Blizzards are independently "suspended" via a spring.

I bought a Snow King in Europe this year for around $90 retail, complete with NiCad battery. I have not seen them in the US, E-bay Germany or E-bay Switzerland list them once in a while.

Actually, the stock radio on the Snow King is pretty good - I never had a control problem on mine, and it was well into the powder a few times.

You're right, the Snow King is not designed to be wrenched on. If you're into snowcats, go for a Blizzard. If, like me, you're collecting them, sooner or later the Snow King will find it's way into your hands. Check ultimatehobbies.com "New" products for the EV and Nitro versions. The older ones show up regularly on e-bay.

Is the original Electric Blizzard (Two motor design) considered superior to the newer single engine design,
or did the new design solve some problems?

The single 550 motor design used in the EV is a complete departure from the original twin-380 setup. In a nutshell, whereas the twin motor Blizzard had one motor per track, the EV's motor drove a differential, with disc brakes on each output shaft (to stop a track for turns).

I like the original setup better. There is space to shoehorn two 550's into the transmission to achieve comparable performance to the EV.

I don't believe the original transmission was changed because there was a design flaw. I have 20 year old Blizzards whose transmission looks and performs as new. I think Kyosho changed the configuration to allow the EV to share parts with the Nitro version, in addition to making motor upgrades easier for higher performance.

If anything, the EV's disk brake setup makes for less precise turning than the older configuration.
