Had an RDO today so I took the #36 down for its first real open area hover. Previously I have just been trying to hover in our smallish back yard, I now know thats nothing like being out in the open.
Took these while the heli was sitting idle so the gyro could get used to the temp/humidity:

Blade hit the ground when it started to get away on me and I brought it down on a funny angle. Oops.

looking rly good, cept for that broken blade :(. im not a CP guy, but whats the second spur gear for? i own a df4, its my first heli, still learning to fly it. pretty hard haha. i never understood how you can fly upside down tho with cp helis....

That looks real nice! How does she fly? Any vids of it? I am getting my Walkera #36 Fully brushless setup, like yours lipos etc.....Hopefully within a few weeks :)
ps, arent those blades upside down? isnt the writing ment to be on top, im unsure with these blades,??

Spad - the stickers have to go to the bottom on those blades, I thought it was wierd too when I first got them. I'm still really trimming and ironing out the bugs like getting rid of a bit of tail wag with the new gyro at the moment but every time I take it out I feel a little more confident in it.
No videos yet, maybe when I can do something worth recording ;)

The parts that broke today I will be remaking out of some carbon fibre sheet, fixed it once before with some CA and it held but I really should fix it properly. I'll hopefully get time for that tomorrow at work. :) will post pics if all goes well...

oh, that's no broken blade, it's made of plastic, and it won't just break like that, no, I see a broken ball on the main blade grips, or a broken control bar. My question is, did the blades hit the tail boom? and if so, why doesn't it look worse than it does?

your heli looks really good, I see you've gotten the align 420LF (good job on that!) and a good gyro, plus a li-poly under that hood. How can you hover with that thing? so far it looks like it's all set up (have you looked at my tuning guide?(bottom link in sig)) I'd suggest wrapping your antenna around the horizontal fin, then around the servo mount and back until you've run out of line, then wrap it around that fin until you have one inch left. Take this and tape it so it's pointing up, I assure you'll get the best reception like that.

What do you guys use to make vids/host them? I'd like to make one of mine once I get my maxamps batt in, for now some pictures will suffice, one thing, though it looks like a piece of trash, the thing flies like a champ, I was flying in some light gusty winds yesterday (using my shot batt) and still kept a pretty good hover. here's what I've done to mine

1. replaced skids and used zipties inplace of the skid poles, no, the stock ones didn't fit
2. use 305mm align woodies
4. nylon/CA'd two of the control rods back together
5. lost my friggin servo arm for the rear servo, so, I just epoxied one of my brothers nonfitting plane ones on :D no problems yet!
6. new tail boom, got a large align one for the XL (it fits) and hacksawed it down to legnth. works just like the old one except this one's golden
7. had a nasty boom strike on my old boom and chopped off the horizontal fin as well as the latter 5/6 of my antenna [:@] removed the "boom support" bars as they really don't do too much, besides, they don't attach to the skids or the boom anymore anyways!
8. new tail shaft, (ark x400) after some trimming on the plastic it worked just fine
9. gone though around 4 shafts, three of them were aluminum PLEASE buy the HP (harden polished) steel ones
10. got the align420LF best decision I made

picture one: my heli, notice it looks... interesting, everytime I fly it and someone comes by they say "did you build that yourself?" I always say "I've taken it apart enough to have!" I'm going to fly advanced aerobatics someday just like it is and show those with the expensive heli's a lesson, imagine a home fixed walkera beating the competition!

PS: the stickers on the bottom of the blades cover up the holes, these are so the blades have more spring and so they don't have as much weight, plastic isn't too light you know

PSS: sorry the first and last pics were crappy, I did the first in a hurry and the last while holding the thing upside down while the blades were spinning...

Okisub: Nice looking 36. I bet that Align motor seriously halls! I was wondering what you could tell me about the Zoom gyro you're running on your bird. I have one of those on order to arrive within the next week. I'm getting rid of all the Walkera electronics and going sererates on it.

oh, and yes, the align motor SEROUSLY hauls, I can lift around half a pound easy, probably more once I get my new li-po in.

You are right Thecheatscalc the blade didn't break it's just one of the control arms which broke previously and was CA glued back together. Making replacements for both sides out of carbonn fibre today. I think the blades were spooling down when it snapped (all happens so fast) as there isn't a mark on the boom. I like your idea about the DIY repairs because the Walkera parts are pretty junky(but the same as the plastic T-rex parts I've been told). Have you tried your LHS for a length of Aluminum tube to make some new skids? Should be able to get a 1metre length for the same price as 1 pair of "real" ones

Bnox- the Zoom gryo is a bit funny to set up. Mine isn't 100% right yet its still wagging the tail a little, have to turn the gain down a bit more. One thing that had me worried about it was when I first fitted it the servo kept going to full lock and I when I moved the Tx stick and let it go it would zip striaght back to full lock. The solution was move the trim bit by bit until the Gyro thought the stick was centred. You'll know the sweet spot because the gryo will just creep slowly either way when you move the stick a little and let it go. It took me a good hour or more so get everything going the right direction etc but its good fun. And when you are hovering if you are using the Walkera Tx you might have to lean a little on the stick to hold it straight as one click over on the trim will make it spin slowly the other direction. I'm working on fixing that too.

All HH gyros cause the servo to creep to one side like that. Some creep faster then others, its good to get air borne quick once the gyro intiatializes to avoid burning up your tail servo.

What on Earth would you want with this Walkera crap?! I gave it a chance and tried to be fair but it's good for nothing. The servos and the gyro (not to mention the supplied lipo/charger) should be criminal. ;)
I should of saved my cash but I'm going to see if I can't get at least some use out of this barebones airframe I've got left.

hah hah, I'm just that way, really, this thing isn't as "trash" as you think, it actually has a very well built frame. mine flies GREAT, no really, it does, I fly in wind with absolutely NO problem, plus, it's really stable. I haven't had a single malfuntion, it's just been me knifin it into the ground. Perhaps I'll chance an upside down sometime, even though I'm not ready, and show you it's no bull. :D

PS: to train for tail in upside down, reverse the throttle and tail, or, use a magnifyer to flip it upside down.

I agree with you in regards to the wind. I've had the thing out in a moderate wind and it was rock steady. A little too steady in fact. Needed a little more control authority which I hope to be able to resolve with the programmable radio gear.

Am I to understand that you are still running the Walkera transmitter and receiever and servos with your #36?If so, how well are they operating for you?
Can't wait to get the Zoom gyro in! I am looking forward to being able to use the transmitter to remotely adjust gyro gain using the extra channel. Have you tried switching it out of heading hold to standard mode just for kicks? I hope you can get that tail wag under control. Let me know if you come up with any further insights.

Bnox- I havn't made up my mind about the Walkera Tx/Rx yet, its very touchy but working. Lets just say I'm stashing little bits of cash here and there to buy a quality radio setup ;) . The servos I don't like, had one die on me but will hopefully buy a radio setup with some better micro servos included in time.

Here is a quick pic of the carbon fibre parts I made today during lunch at work. Took about 45 minutes to cut, drill, make brass washers and assemble them. They are a perfect fit, can't wait til I can try it out again :D

oh, thats a SCREW :D now I see... :P perhaps you could make some and sell em to me, mine are going to need fixing as the plastic's not going to take to too many more reglue jobs...

also, I too use all stock electronics, besides the motor controler, the walkera one died on me like it's known to do. I still have the three black servos and the one yeller one. the yellow one is iffy, I'm not sure why they even tried to make it, (the black ones seem to be much better) but, I'll just have to live with it. besides that, mine flies great, and mine isn't too touchy, the tail is REALLY sensitive so I stuck the gyro back on just to dampen that a bit.
