Default gasser in a "73 inch WH Edge 540T"

I know where I can get a "new" Super Tartan 22cc gasser for a great price, will it be an OK match for the 73 inch WH Edge 540T (for non-3D flying),, or will it be to much weight ?? the wing area at 1090 should be OK..

The little Edge has been flown on a Brison 2.4 just fine. I think you would have a good sport flyer on that engine. My past experience with a quarter scale edge on gas was with a Roto 25 on a YA 1.20 size Edge. The Wild Hare Edge is light, and has a good amount of wing area.

Whats the weight of the engine? I would imagine so long as its under 3lbs you should be ok. Remember running a gas engine you can get away with a smaller fuel tank, which will only help your AUW.

You think that a Moki 2.10 would be OK?

Moki 2.1 would be a lot of power.

Yes it would be- but I am so on the fence here Tom- I love your planes and I've got this motor sitting here. It weights about 44.5 oz w/o a pipe- thats around 2.8 pds I think. Do you think it will stay together? Can it be done with out flight characteristics being destroyed?

Also, if you compare your 73" Edge to Chip Hydes Cap X....the numbers are close to each other. The Cap X flys a DA-50 very well from what a guy told me once that has had two of them....The Cap X only has 1" span over the Edge but the Edge beats it out by 40 sq inchs in loading (1090 sq inch compared to the CAP X's 1050 sq inch)! I like your plane better Tom, Im not trying to suck up here- I just know that the quality of your models is very good and they where designed well. Plus they look good!

I too thought about the Chip Hyde Cap when thinking about the WH 73 inch Edge, and I knew the it would fly with a 22cc gasser because I have a PA Gee BeeY with a MVVS 35cc gasser and it's wing area is ONLY 85 inches larger (1175) than the Edge,,,

I'm just worried how it will hold-up ??

2.8 pounds is the same weight as my Brison 2.4, I see no problem there.

Moki's have to be the nicest glow engine in that you start them up with flipping the prop back once. Have to love that. In comparison my gas engines take about 4 flips or more, but you dont need a glow starter. I would think the moki would really be an awesome combo.

For a 2.8 to 3 lbs. engine, wouldn't you have to mount the rudder servo in the tail? Is there a slot or do you have to make one?

Yes, with a heavier engine put the rudder servo in the tail. There is no slot, but I cut a new one beneath and behind the elevator servo on the right side. It's balsa so it's easy to cut, then harden the wood with thin CA.

Tom

I have a BME 44 sitting on the shelf waiting for a plane. How would this engine work in the smaller edge?

The BME 44 is at the upper range of weight and power for this plane but should work well.

My son and I are building the 73" Edge now with my Echo 44cc conversion. Same as your BME 44. Check my thread 1.20 Edge Gasser for a few pictures of the engine installed.

I just finished my 73" Edge. Running an OS 160 with APC 18X6 wide blade prop. Plane performs awesome! Engine weighs 2 lbs. Total plane weight with engine is 12 lbs.

The OS loves 15% nitro and isn't really thirsty. Sound great, runs great. Gotta love it. Can't imagine why you would want more power, especially if you have to add more weight to get it.

I am also ordering this plane, so you think the os 1.6 is a good choice?

The 160 is great in the Edge, PM me your email and i'll send you a video of mine. If you don't have an engine yet, be sure to check out the classifieds. There might be a spectacular deal on a 160 with a few gallons through it ready to go in the 120 Edge (hint hint nudge nudge).
