Default Proud new owner...NNIB, OS, 35% Giles (R/W scheme)

I'm the proud new owner of a Nearly New, In Box, Old Stock, Red & White 35% Giles!!!

It'll be delivered to my house today about 3:30pm (EST). I'm stoked!

I know it is an older model, but it is like new. The orig. owner only hinged it (except the rudder) and buil the fuel tank and landing gear. Cowl is uncut.

I'm getting an RCGF 100cc engine from Tired Old Man (Pat, the M/O is in the mail )

Hopefully I can get it done quick, as this will be my IMAC ride for the next couple years!!!

Jon,

I have one of those planes, from the first shipment. Mine is also the red/white "Feather" scheme (shown in my 7 year-old old avatar picture). I bought it with my two brothers. It flew hard for several years and then I moved out of state and had to leave it at my dad's house as I didn't have room for it. I flew it sporadically for a couple of years every time I would visit, then about 2-3 years ago we mothballed it.

Last Thanksgiving I pulled it out again. After a bit of work getting the cranky engine running, I found the plane flew just as well as it had before. The Giles design has very strong yaw stability. The plane flies like an arrow which is a bonus for IMAC. It is very easy to maintain the flight path following a snap, and spin recoveries are easy to manage. Rolling maneuvers are on a line as well.

I believe I had the rudder mixed to 7% top aileron and 5% up elevator for perfect, hands-off, horizon-to-horizon knife edge.

I think it needs a bit of aileron differential but I never added any.

Keep the CG in the proper range and the plane is very sweet to fly. The Giles is NOT a snappy airplane until you get the CG to far back. With the CG at the center of the wing tube or slightly forward it flies like an arrow and still floats on landing.

Post some pictures!

Thanks for the advice BT. I got it on it's gear tonight. I noticed that the SN stamped on the firewall is 000001, my wing and fuselage boxes are also stamped 001, carton 59. Newspaper stuffing in the boxes are dated Dec 2002. The origional owner is R. Lundeen of Maquon IL. (I wonder if he's here on RCU or over on FG? [sm=72_72.gif]).

My wing tube is heat shrinked in yellow tubing, and the stab tube is red anodized. I'm missing the tail wheel assembly, so I gotta get one of them and find a 5" spinner that is reasonably priced ([:@]).

I should have my engine soon...look'in forward to that.

I'll get pics along shortly.

I'm thinking about taking my Hitec 5945's out of my Edge and putting them in the Giles, and getting putting the Power HD 1501's in the Edge. What do you all think about the 5945's in the Giles? One per aileron and elevator half. Would a single JR 8611 (not an "A" version) be okay for rudder? (Basically stripping the Edge, putting it all in the Giles and refitting the Edge with Power HD stuff.)

Okay, next question: what size arms on elevator and aileron servos?

The assembly continues.

Got the engine hung and then had to relocate it up about 1/8" to get the spinner/cowl alignment correct. I used cowl attachment mounts from Hobby People to replace the missing cowl tabs on my airframe.

Tank is plumed, C/F tail wheel is on.

Taking my time, having fun putting this one together.

WOW!!! Has it been almost a year since I posted in this thread???

Anyway, it is done, except for a quick engine tune. I tried running the engine last week, but a bone dry carb didn't want to cooperate and I put it back in the workshop and did a little PM on the carb to get it wet.

Graphics are on it. I'll mount the cowl back up once I get it running.

I have it balanced right on the front edge of the wing tube.
