35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Tom,
I saw elsewhere (can't remember where) that you are getting IMAC wings for the Extra. Will you be selling the Extra with these wings? When will they be in stock? Does the 35% Extra make a decent IMAC platform? How much coupling is there in he airframe? I'm looking for the perfect airplane for a DA-100... it seems like the motor might be a little too heavy for the Extra 260 to still have good 3D performance... that's why I'm looking at the 35%... plus, bigger just looks so much better! Thanks |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Will you be selling the Extra with these wings?
Yes, that's the plan. We're doing a minor redesign, changing theplane from a 330LX to a 330SX, single place canopy. That huge canopy was always a manufacturing/shipping issue. The new plane will have the improved airfoil. OUr testing has shown it loses almost nothing in slow flight and greatly improves the precision stuff. Though the size of the plane does not change, this makes the new plane 37% scale instead of 35%, since the "S" version of the full scale plane is smaller than the "L" version. I think the 37% designation more accurately describes how large this plane really is. When will they be in stock? Since we're now out of stock and the next container is about to leave with the 260s in it, we won't see any of these until mid April at the earliest. Does the 35% Extra make a decent IMAC platform? How much coupling is there in the airframe? With the original airfoil it makes a good IMAC platform for basic thru intermediate. When you get to advanced it seems like every maneuver includes some kind of snap element or a spin, and the plane is a little hard to snap well in certain circumstances. For example, a downline snap is tough because the plane doesn't want to stall no matter how hard you try because of the increasing airspeed. The new airfoil will make an excellent IMAC platform all the way through unlimited. There is very little coupling. Normal mixes are in the 1-3% range to get rid of any coupling. I'm looking for the perfect airplane for a DA-100... it seems like the motor might be a little too heavy for the Extra 260 to still have good 3D performance... that's why I'm looking at the 35%... plus, bigger just looks so much better! On the contrary, a DA-100 should be very exciting since the260 will be around 24.5 lbs with the DA. There's stillplenty of wing area and the power to weight will be excellent. But I can't argue with the "bigger is better" idea. TF |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Between the 260 and the 330:
Which do you prefer flying? Which has better slow-flight / harrier characteristics? Which has a stronger rudder? Thanks again! |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
That's a tough choice. The 260 has less coupling, rudder authority is slightly better on the 330LX. The 260 is smaller and lighter.
The 330LX is out of stock and won't be back until at least April. 260s will be here in about 6-7 weeks. TF |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
This thread has my eyebrows raised. I just finished an extra special for IMAC. I plan to fly Basic and it will be a long time before I ever move to the upper classes, but curiously what IMAC class will the extra special get me to?

RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Your plane will fly anything through intermediate.
If you get to advanced and you're still flying that plane, I'll give you a new set of wings that will take you the rest of the way. ;) TF |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Will the new wings fit without mods, and will the color scheme match?
What would be the app~ price for a new set of wings? Thanks, |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Yes they will fit and bolt right on. A set can be ordered for $300, however it may take a while.
Ordering ahead is required, call me at 817-430-0107 but not this week. TF |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
is that price for the 28% or the 35 % wings

RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Tom
The wings on my 28% Extra Special have the sharper leading edge if I understand correctly this helps control snaps. So there is the origional 28% wings, the sharper leading edge 28% wings, and 28% IMAC wings? If so what is the difference between the 28% sharper leading edge wings and the 28% IMAC wings Dan P |
RE: 35% Extra 330 IMAC Version
Just more of the same effect.
The sharper leading edge helps to stop the snaps and spins more quickly, but is not as effective as the new airfoil. IT is however better than the blunt LE. I made the change in design gradually so as not to bring out a plane which was too radical. I can test things myself but I cannot always judge the tastes of people. I didn't want to make it so that people complained about it being too quick to stall, which is what happens if one goes to far with thinning the airfoil. TF |
