David,
I tried my Slimline DA50 muffler on the MVVS 58 today and it is not going to fit the cowl with out cutting.
The muffler would extend beyond the cowl about 1", only on one side.
(Below is a photo of the area that interferes. Area is marked in red on photo)
The slimline is 2" Diam. by 5" long.
This is the same measurements as J'Tec, per an E-mail I got from Al Young.
Per Tom, the Bisson would also require cutting of the cowl. (on both corners)
Tom has been working on getting a cutom fit muffler from Bisson, I'll see what J'Tec can come up with.

I'd band-saw off the corner of the pipe and get someone to weld a flat plate on in it's place. You could even silver solder a piece in place. Easy!

David- Al @ J'Tec is working on a modified muffler to fit this plane.
once the size / shape is found then setting up the mount for diff engines should be easy.
Here is a photo of the clearance issues with the slimline, along with my cut up photo of what I believe is needed.

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

Hehehe...if you've got the skills to do it in Photoshop, you can do it in metal - seriously! Make the cuts that you have described in your photo, lay the cut ends of the pipe down on a piece of paper and trace the oval shape that would cover the opening. Add a couple of "tabs" that you can bend up, trace the resulting pattern on some 1/16" aluminum and have at 'er with your jig saw (you have one of those right? everyone gets one for Christmas sooner or later!). Bend the tabs up so that they hold the new end-plates in place and silver solder them on. Bisson pipes are all soldered together and they stand up pretty good. If you want it stronger, once you have the plates cut, it would take someone with the appropriate welder about 5 minutes to weld them on.

Sounds like a plan, thanks

I just want you to get 'er done so you can tell us all how that pretty airplane flies!

Cut a Slimline DA-50 pitts muffler to fit, tig welding the pieces together.

While waiting on the mods, I installed the tanks and lines.
Used the two line setup with the fuel dot and tee from Toms hardware kit.
Put grommets on the carb/vent lines where they passed through the fuse.
A little med. CA to hold them in place.

Corrected my rudder pull-pull linkage.
Tried a SWB Double-lock arm set at 4" & 4-1/2", no good.
Thought about adding another 4-40 hole between these, too tight.
Ordered a Uni-Hub from Air Wild to go with the servo arm included with the plane.
The rudder horn is @ 4-3/16" spacing, so the servo arm needed to match.

Should have the throttle/ choke linkage, wire and mounts done by Sat.

Flier, Your tiger is looking great. Quick question. Do you know who mfgr's the sukoui for tom? The construction really looks alot like a CA. just curious...

Thanks,
Tripp

Tripp---The construction is exactly like comp-arf, I have both. I do not know the exact manufacturers name.

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

The Manuf. is X-Treme Composites, link here.
http://www.xtremecomposite.com/catalog.asp?cat=2
The guy that runs X-Treme, used to work for Comp. Arf.
Planes Plus is selling the X-Treme comp. Edge 540T, that is also getting real good reviews.

Thanks, Flier. I knew there had to be some connection.

Keep up the good work.

Mounted the throttle, and choke servos in a tray that was made from the one that comes with the plane.
Trimmed to fit the wing tube sleeve and glue in with epoxy.
Mounted the RX and connected all leads, and routed the RX antenna back along the fuse.

Hey Tom, does the white version of the Sukhoi have the checkerboard tail like the one below or is it the star version like the yellow/blue one?

rctom 10-03-2005 03:17 PM

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

Star version, everybody on here saif they hated the checkers.

BTW if you are thinking about getting one in the Sukhoi scheme give me a call, I may have a deal for you. Same for anyone else.

Well I got the mods to the DA-50 slimline muffler done.
Still need to port match yet, but looking real nice so far.
The photo below shows the area to be removed to match the MVVS 58.

UPS dropped off the Tru-Turn spinner today also.
Got the P-51 style in a 3-1/2" cut for a 24 x 8 prop.
The looks fit the Sukhoi well.

flier---Have you mounted your stabs yet?
If so be sure that the screws made it through the the wood block and not just the skin and the fiberglass tube.

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

RTK,
Yea I got them mounted, turned out OK.
Thanks for the heads up though.

Finished the muffler mods to the DA-50 Slimline Pitts.
The port matching took awhile to do but very worth the time.
Trimmed the cowl some more and mounted the muffler, looked real good.
Use masking tape as a guide, to cut a better line than I can cut freehand!
Cut each exhaust pipe down about 1", to make the cowl install/removal easier.
The clearance from cowl to muffler turned out to be about 3/16"-1/4".
The pipes are not centered on the engine's center line, but for a modded muffler, it'll do.

Anyone get their Sukhoi going yet? I've been following this thread with interest. Really a neat looking airplane. Flier, just curious as to what servos you chose?

flier 10-13-2005 07:54 AM

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

For servos I went with all HiTec's.
4-HS5945MG's for Ail. & Elv.
1-HS5955TG for Rud.
2-425BB's for Throt. & Choke.
All servos running at 6V.

Anyone flown this plane yet? what sice is it, 28% ?

rctom 10-18-2005 10:53 AM

RE: Wild Hare Composite Sukhoi build thread

The size is a little larger than our other 28% planes with an 87" span.

Thats nice, bigg, SU, larger than 28%, light, should be a nice electric conversion i think ;)

Joacim, that's what I was thinking. I think Tom mentioned that it might come in a bit lighter than the 28% airplanes. Are you going to give it a try?
