Wildhare Yak 54 Build Thread

1 Attachment(s)
Well guys

The first Yak 54 has made it downunder (got shipped direct from the factory) and has started to be put together. So far the undercarriage and tail wheel has been installed.

I plan on using a DA 50 for power with JR gear and Smart-Fly products to guide it around the sky.

So im waiting on some gear to come from the states but i will update this thread as I do bits and pieces.

So to start off with, some pics to get you guys waiting for the shipment exicted.

The First Photo shows everything out of the box
Photos 2 & 3 shows the construction
The rest show everything together, the size against a Composite-Arf Extra 2.6 and the extreme control throws.

Cheerz

I'm cleaning my workshop in anticipation! I am going to have this one & the Sukhoi going together at the same time. The plane looks great & should be an easy build. What are you putting under the cowl?

Nice pic's of the YAK. Thanks for posting them.

My new DA 50 is just waiting for the model to arrive. I've already purchased all the Hitec servo's and Sunday, while at the AMA convention I talked to Jack from Duralite and ordered the batteries for the YAK.

Also, while at the AMA convention I bought the rest of the odds and ends that I'll need for the YAK (i.e. servo wire extensions). So, I'm hoping I haven't forgotten anything that I'll need for the building process, because this YAK will be my first gasser.

Keep sending pic's of the building process....they look good.

Well tonight I did all I could until my bits from the US turn up.

Started off with the wheels and wheel pants. This would have to be the easiest wheel pants ive ever install. Every nut and bolt is supplied with the kit. First thing to do is to bolt the axle onto the pre drill aluminium landing gear (shown in photo 2). Next is to drill 2 holes in the wheelpant and CA in the blind nuts into the inside of the pant. Throw one wheel collar onto the axle, place the wheel inside the pant and slip on over the axle. Next using a some pliers, place the last wheel coller onto the axle and tighten into place. Put the 4-40 bolts/lock washers and flat washers through to secure the wheel pants into place.

As easy as that!

Next up was the tailwheel - again this was very easy as everything is pretty much done. The hole for the tailwheel is already pre-drill. So i just slipped it into place and screwed on the supplied brackets. Next up was to screw on the tailwheel tiller to the rudder, put the springs on and its done.

The last thing to do was the canopy. This comes pre-painted, pre-tinted and looks awesome. I trimmed it to fit and screwed it on using the supplied 8 screws with 3 each side and 2 on the front (This could be epoxyed on but I like to screw it on). Took the screws out and hardened up the holes with CA.

Is that as far back as the cowling can go? The Nose seems a little long compared to a full-scale Yak, but I'm sure Tom stretched and shrunk the specs on the plane for performance's sake.

Just curious how much further back the cowl can go and still have the drivehub of say a DA50 line up close enough to look normal.

We're waiting for more pics ;-)

BTW are those regular 4-40 metal pushrods with Nylon Clevises for this plane? Are they safe to use on a plane this size??

RE: Wildhare Yak 54 Build Thread

They are our regular composite-reinforced 4-40 all thread pushrods as supplied in the HW kit with Sullivan clevises.

Are we still on schedule for end of Feb on plane deliveries?

rctom 02-06-2006 10:33 AM

RE: Wildhare Yak 54 Build Thread

I expect them soon, end of February will be no problem.

They will probably arrive on the 17th because I'll be out of town that day.

Speaking on new deliveries, will there be any 28% Edge cowls in this one?

Right a quick update on the Yak. I havent really done much lately due to the fact that my shipment hasnt yet arrived from the states. Hoping that it will be here this week with any luck. My DA-50 is on back order for another week so im aiming to have it flying by the end of this month.

So what ive done lately is to remount the cowl. The cowl comes pre mounted from the factory but was way off centre, just a matter of redrilling the hole in the right places. Ive also cut out all the louvers on the cowl to allow for cooling. It was time consuming and properly didnt need to be done but just for the scale factor I did it.

I hate to tell you this, I talked with DA today and they said it will be at least 3 more weeks before they have parts to start building DA-50s again.
