Engine weights
 

Interesting chart regarding gas engine weights found in the "will Brison survive" thread in the gas engine forum. Doesn't just pertain to Brison engines, so it could be useful to all that want a 50cc engine.

It appears that the Brison 3.2, fully loaded, ends up lighter than a DA 50. The chart did not copy well to this forum so you may want to wander over to the Gas Engine Forum to take a look. Or just click the link below.

There may be some arguements about muffler weights, but the overall changes would not make much of a difference in the end, perhaps just match a few of the engines up in final weights.

I was surprised to see only a few 100's of an ounce difference between the DA 50 and the Taurus 52. The end price difference was quite surprising as well. Just goes to show ya how effective advertising can be. Those that spend the advertising dollar in a big way in the right places will be bought more often than those that don't. Unfortunately, the price of the product increases with the amount of advertising.

Pat, As you said the only problem with his final weights is if you use the Bisson W/A Pitts muffler for the DA then the DA is lighter. He chose the heaviest muffler (cannister excluded) that you could put on the DA which is not a fair comparison.

It is however a nice table to start understanding the different weights of motors we use.

If you go with a Bisson wrap around Pitts on a Brison the difference between that and the JA is within a couple of ounces or less. If you go with the straight drop Bisson Pitts then I would agree with an unfair advantage call. A lot of people go with the JA muffler for either engine due to a somewhat lower noise level.

Thats gotta to be one of the better posts in the forum. SO many here compare engines apples to oranges. Many dont realize some companies post thier engine wt completly bare some post wts with ignition etc.

What a debate killer. Nice find!

The current link shows a wa pitts on the DA and it stil isn't lighter.

The canister muffler on the MVVS/Evolution really moves it out of first place. A Bisson inverted would be take another 6 oz off. Perhaps it is better to look at the engine and ignition since the muffler is a personl preference type of thing to some extent.

After going over the chart again I noted that the DA weight is provided using a Slimline W/A Pitts muffler. I'm not positive, but I believe the Slimline is a bit lighter than the Bisson W/A Pitts muffler. My opinion is that any weight difference between the two mufflers is so insignificant as to have no effect with the final weight analysis.

Yeah... He lists the muffler type and the DA is listed with a Slimline wa. The Evolution however is listed with a canister system. Very weird.

My overall point in posting the reference chart was to illustrate the differences between the Brison, DA, and BME engines. There has been soooo much talk over the past couple of years about how light the DA 50 is that I thought it might be a good time to quash the arguements. Bare metal engine weight differences between the DA and Brison are only 5 ounces apart. BFD.

You know I am a big BME Fan...LOL

I have CD'd 5 IMAC's and Have seen probably over 70, 50cc size planes fly. I have never seen anybody having problems with a BME 50, but I can't say that about DA-50. A friend and I both have 28% extra special's His has a DA-50 and Mejzlik 23x8 Mine has a BME 50 and 22x8 mejzlik, both engines were well broken in. Mine out pulled on the upline, and flew faster straight and level..

I havent seen many brisons so I can't comment on them.

PS: I am patiently awaiting a train to Leave LA..I have a BME 110 that is lonley without an Extra 260...LOL

I am not stating that one engine is better than the other just posting my observations so you may draw your own conclusions.

It would be really cool if somebody could host that chart and we could build on it. I can provide Data for the BME 110...LOL

Check e-bay. I picked up a digital one a year ago that will weigh up to 25lbs with +/- 0.1 oz accuracy. It was around $25, I use it all the time especially with foamys.
