Which 28"% really is the best?
 

i'm about to buy either the cap, extra, (special or lx) or edge from wildhare. my question is:

those who have flown all of these planes, or some of them, which do you like the best? Even if they are all great and there isn't a "best" i want your opinion of which you like the best.

for me personally, i've found i love airplanes that fly like a pattern plane, really crisp, but i want something that will really mush in and out of high alpha stuff and do crazy 3D. isn't that what everyone wants? I've found its really a compromise on the cg point...

I know i'll be happy with any of em, but i just wanted a few last opinions. Thats what i want: opinions. Which do you have the most fun with? Tom i definatley want your feelings on this one. I appreciate everyones help with all my questions in this forum.... i'm pretty much done now.

Well first there's a practical point to be made, the only 28% plane I have now is the Cap, and the Yak if you can fudge the size down a little.

There's another small batch of 300LXs coming about end of April.

The Yak will do what you want, but nobody's flying it yet except one guy here in Dallas, so you won't get a lot of feedback. So will the Cap.

Also, FYI, the Extra Specials are being replaced by an all new Extra 300. It's a similar configuration, 84", mid wing, dual place cockpit, it's a very close scale model of the original Extra 300. This new plane is wider, has lots more room in the cowl, it has huge control surfaces so its 3d performance should be very good, and it's about 2 pounds lighter than the Extra Special.

It has room for a canister setup too. Under 16lbs with a DA-50, I know this because I have one so equipped.

Help us a little bit, what engine do you have to work with?

wow those new extras are gorgeous. I have a brand new g-62 that i just sent to RC ignitions that i'll be getting back this week. I wouldn't mind waiting for that extra.... what are you asking for it? (price)

Get the EXTRA SPECIAL<< (or according to TOM the new Extra 300) it is the best of both worlds, 3d and pattern/IMAC,,,

The new Extra will be a little more than the old one, like $429, because it costs us a bit more.

But it comes with a better tailwheel, wheels and axles that are not too bad, and much better quality control.

It will be available in red/yellow/black also, like the old one.

I am building the extra special 300. Cant comment on which extra is best becuase I have flown one yet. This almost makes me wish I would have waited. Where do you lose the 2 pounds?

Lighter construction and built-up wings, lighetr landing gear. The whole plane is just built more lightly.

Do not worry that you missed the boat. The new planes won't be here for a few months, and the Extra 300 Special is a very good plane also. It's more rugged, more able to stand up to a crash. I may buy some more Extra Specials if there seems to be demand for the stronger plane.

Not everyone is a TOC pilot.

The new ones should be fine with a G62. Balancing will be about the same as the old Extra 300 Special, it may need the rudder servos in the tail.

We don't take deposits, just place an order with a CC# so when the plane comes in we can charge the card and ship the plane without having to call you.
Cancel any time.

Our builder in China likes built-up wings and they are lighter than foam, so I went with the flow. Also they seem to keep their appearance longer. Wood sheeting is very strong but after a while they start accumulating dents which require care to remove.

Each design has its strongpoints, I usually accept what the builder prefers unless there is some reason to go the other way.

Hey RCTOM, I have one of the first runs of the Extra Special ,Red,yellow, black, I like the way it fly's but I have seen it act funny in some attitudes of flight,, My friend told me that you have a set of updated wings for the special, could mine be replaced or what,, thanks RCTOM

well i flew my friends lx today w/ da 50. it was fun! big airplanes really do fly different. Rolling harriers were great. It was freezing! I can't wait to fly in warm weather. I still don't know what plane i want though!

Tom, do the new extras have bigger ailerons? I would have liked a little more throw there. I also thought the airplane seemed to "balloon" when you touched the elevator..... i noticed a lot of 3D planes fly this way.... do you guys find that you can find a spot on the cg where the airplane won't balloon when you give it elevator, but it'll still 3D's nice? I can't stand that... its like flying helis with pitchy paddles....

I've flown both version of the older Extras, and the Edge. If all you're ever going to fly is 3D, then the Edge was the way to go. If you wanted to fly precision and 3D equally, the 300S was the one to have. If precision took first place, and 3D second, the the LX was the better choice. I don't know how the newer wing version worked out. Perhaps a better break in the stall??

That new Extra looks like it may capture the best of both worlds with the lighter built up methods. I'd get one but another plane right now would be the death of me by my wife's hands. She's always ticked because the ones I have are taking up all the storage space in the shed, the shop, and part of the back room.[:o]

Neat!!

A slightly higher stab on the 300 will do some very nice things for a harrier type maneuver:D It should almost make them too easy.

What's the latest on these new extra's.Man I need one soon.They are pleasing to the eye and I have a trusty G62 ready to go.:D

Just my two cents for what seems to be the next hot EXTRA 300 on the market would be a more scale like covering scheme.Will a basic white be available on these new ones TOM?

yes and yes. We will have a few plain white ones and an Evolution 58 will make it like a rocket.
