Shook Up!
 

Just made the first six flights on my WH Edge V2 on Tuesday. Yesterday, I took it out again. About sixty seconds into the flight, one half of one blade (Zinger 22X8 on a G-62) came apart, and left me with .75 of a prop. I was a couple hundred feet up, full throttle. The arcraft shook like mad and made a terrible noise. I throttled back to idle and made a quick landing - only then realizing what had happened. Muffler was about off, screws for canopy were most of the way out, batteries had been thrown from their harnesses. I was amazed at just how much stuff came looose in just a about two seconds. The airframe seems fine. Very solid, and I can't fined any other issues as a result of the prop coming apart. Any advice on what specific damage I should be checking for?

Please use a good prop! Zingers are only good for mixing paint! by the way Tom sells good props!

Another thought. That G-62 should have at minimum been running a 22-10. 23-8 would have been a better choice still. As Mark noted, use better props. The cheap ones don't save you any money in the long run. Glad to hear it all ended well. Woulda scared the dickens outta me.

Check the firewall and all the wood joints very careful to be sure the glue joints are intact. Losing a prop blade has been known to tear the entire engine from the plane.

Buy a bunny prop (Tom's) or a higher end prop like an NX or even Troy Built Models makes a Menz-like prop. All very good and for around $30.00.

I would check the firewall. If you had batteries come loose....looks like the firewall had to get weakened. If you haven't pinned it yet, NOW would be a good time. Don't want you firewall to rip off next flight because of no reinforcement. Since you got the new V2 Edge a good prop is worth the extra $10-20 for a quality props.

Make sure also that a stringer on the bottom did not break. They are strong together, with one broken it can be a domino effect with the rest breaking behind it.

Also....i would recheck the entire airframe as well for buckeld covering and such. I have seen a 36% katana do exactly what yours did , but a lot worse. Motor was a BME 110 spinning a 28-10 prop when the prop came apart in the middle. It shook the plane so violently that it factured parts of the fuse , tweaked the wing tube , and some small fractures on the wings themselves. And then looking back towrads the back of the plane it broke some of the hinges on the rudder and elevator along with some other broken wood under the covering. If i remeber right.i think one of the elevator actually fell off on the final aproach ( it was deadstick landing) , it was only hanging by one hinge and then it gave way too. Total time for destruction was probably about 2 seconds. He got it in and landed it , but had alot of repairs. Check all your covering for wrinkles and such....it's a good sign some of the wood moved.

You were lucky. Normally when that happens the plane just explodes.

Tom,

If it can withstand this it must be over built. ;) Just kidding man. I have never seen this happen and the motor stay on the plane. You have a lot of checking to do. Literally everything needs a once or twice over.

Luckily, only about 1/3 of one blade of the prop came off - the trailing edge. So, it wasn't as harsh as it could have been. I checked out everything that I could get to, and it has since been airborne several times with no problems.
