Looks good;), How did it fly.

Looks good...A Flight report would be even better!!!!

RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Carroll,
Looks great. Are you coming to the Heatwave in the Heartland and if so, are you bringing the new Sukhoi. Would like to see how it looks next to my 35% one. Ken |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Hello Ken,
I might come with a fellow club member. Were still discussing the trip. The 50cc Sukhoi only has three flights on it and more today if the clouds don't cry. I'm really impressed with the way it flies so far, still trimming the cg which I had set on the wing tube center. I had to add 12oz. for balance at that point, but removed 6oz after a couple flights and seems to be about right for my style of flying. Anyone thinking about getting this plane from Tom won't be dissapointed. Carroll P.S. the plane has a DA 50 with side mount (stock) muffler |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Mine balanced out perfectly with the TOC 53
|
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
thewrap, Are you running a pitts on the TOC? I have mine balnaced at the aft end of the wing tube and I will probably remove three more ounces from the nose which will leave 3 ounces still up there. My batteries are right in front of the gas tank. The plane really flares when landing as if tail heavy but I heard the Sukhoi lands with its tail dragging.
|
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Be careful in removing that weight. It's big brother approaches pretty level.
|
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
I am a bit hesitant on removing anymore weight from the nose. Although the plane wants to drop its nose a bit on a 45 deg. upline, it makes me wonder why it wants to drag its tail on landing.
Think I'll just leave well enough as is.... |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Hey Carroll,
As Silversurfer has noted my big Sukhoi which is ballanced on the front half of the wing tube (just a little nose heavy) approaches pretty flat. I can make it land tail heavy by dropping the throttle too soon and trying to make it land with the elevator only but it really likes to land flat with a couple of clicks of throttle to control the glide slop and then chop the gas at a couple of feet. Then the plane just sort of slows down and lands itself. |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Ken,
That's pretty much how I land this one. The Sukhoi doesn't float like the Edge which is not a problem at all. The tail dragging just happens when throttle is cut and close to or at ground affect. This isn't a problem at all though. The plane is a great little 50cc plane and a load of fun to fly. It's short fuse makes it a good tumbler which I like! On the Heat Wave, four of us are coming up, but we won't be bringing planes. Were going to stay Sat. and watch the top pilots do their thing and then head back that evening. Carroll |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Carroll-RCU, great to have you guys coming up, I will have my WH Sukhoi there and if you want a pull on the sticks, you can teach it to do what I can't yet..
|
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
I better stick to watching, some of my tricks are performed not knowing what I did to make it happen. Maybe that's why they call it tricks!

RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
What servos does it call for? I can't find anything about that on the web site.
I just bought 4 5645s, and a 5745 for the rudder for a GP Yak54 80 incher to be powered with a Mag 4.0 radial that swings a 22x10 7000 rpm. Now I'm having second thoughts, I really wanted the 81 inch Yak54 form WH, but they're out of stock, this was offered a substitute, but I thought it was a little large, the GP Yak seems a little small though, any opinion would be welcomed. I'm not into competing, just want a cool plane that sounds good too. |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
If that engine really swings a 22-10 at 7000 rpm it will be perfect on the Sukhoi, it would have overpowered the smaller Yak.
5645s are fine on ailerons and elevator, and in fact work well on the rudder also. 5645s are good servos if you are not picky about perfection in centering. The 5745 is not a great choice because it is so heavy. A 5955 is a much more powerful servo and weighs only 2 oz. vs. almost 6 for the 5745. I am not familiar with that engine, where can I see details. I don't know the weight, but my guess is it's pretty heavy which is another good reason why the Sukhoi is a better choice. TF |

My recall on the rpms was off some, what do you think of these numbers? The other radial in the picture is a Saito 450R3 for size conpairson.

RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Six+ pounds? That's like 2 DA-50s. This might be an interesting combination for sport flying or scale competition, but it will be awfully heavy for great performance.
Also, I have never seen a reliable radial model engine, have you? TF |

RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
At 6 POUNDS you will probably have a terrible flying experience. Why, because just to balance the plane with that much nose weight will require another pound of wieght in the tail. Know you will have an aerobatic plane that cannot do any type of decent aerobatics due to lack of power. You will also have a hard time landing, At an average weight of 21 pounds a aerobat with only 1430 of wing area will have to be flown in. This will be a darn shame as all of the wild hare planes are easy going floaters that require little experience to get down safely every time.
That advertised prop rpm was probably done with a zinger prop (What is usally used with this type of engine on a scale type bird like a warbird) not a menz or mejlik type prop. So knock of roughly 500 rpms and your at 6400-6600 with a 22x8. You would probably have more fun placing that engine in a bigger waco that was desighned for it. |
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
I'm hoping it flies well with the radial, the backup plan is a Fuji64.
|
RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
The Sukhoi will probably do it. Youll want to move a lot of weight into the tail and reinforce the firewall section.

RE: Sukhoi 50 cc graphics
Why not sell the fuji and invest in the toc 53? If you did you will definitly be a happier pilot. The one thing with giant scale aerobats is that you dont want to leave the manufactures recommendations by far, if you do you will most likely be very disappointed.
Not trying to rag or anything but I have run into these scenarios time and time again. If you want to head to the field and just fly without headaches, invest wisely and your pocket and sanity will thank you in the end. |
