PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE 88" EDGE 540

Hi,

The new plane should arrive the middle of next week.

Are there any links to build this model?

Regards

Sweet!

Lots of pics and flight reports are required! :)

There's one on the giant site but I can't remember the name of it. It's super easy to assemble and you should have it together and ready to fly in a week or less if you have all the things you need. You're going to be very happy.

Interesting indeed.

I still haven't figurerd out the reasons why the owner had so many problems. Without assigning fault I can definitively state that his issues were highly unusual for a Wild Hare kit. Still some useful information there, although you prolly won't need any assistance due to the ease of assembly. The instructions provide everything you need to make it happen. Remember that Wild Hare instructions are somewhat generic since most of the planes assemble in a similar manner. Always check the W/H website for any instruction "addendums" that address specific models. If in doubt, send me a PM either on RCU or the site you found the thread on and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

The only thing I'll suggest is that you never trust the firewall centering mark on any makers kit. Just like in carpentry, measure twice, cut once. Same applies with drilling a hole. Wood shrinks and expands with changes in temperature and humidity, often moving things away from the position they were in when originally assembled since wood density is not consistent. That usually only amounts to a millimeter or two, but it may be enough to give someone a headache. Wild Hare has some notes in their instructions that address engine centering, and I make a centering jig for each type of engine I have to assure good positioning.

:)I'm building one of this planes. It is very straight forward and easy to build. The hinges are already done. ( I really like that as hinging is one of my least favorite things to do. Now I'm gonna have to find something else that is my least favorite thing to do) I'm putting the DLE55 on mine with 7955 servos and A123 battery. I'm putting a cannister in mine to keep the noise down. They don't like noise at my field.

I had the V2 of this plane and ended up giving it to a friend. I really missed it so I'm replacing it with this one.

My only problem is.....I'm flying my 35% Edge so much that I can't get motivated to get this baby built. I'm more than 1/2 way done but haven't done much in the last week or two. But....I just decided to finish this thing this week and maiden it on our club "Fly In" next Saturday. I'm pretty sure I can get it done by this with a little effort.

Good luck with yours.

And

Thanks
Barry

Can't find time to get his 50cc edge built, cuz he's having too much fun with his 100cc Edge.

Yeah...tough problem, that! :)

The only reason I let my v2 go was because I also have the 35% version. Had I more room to store planes I probably would not have let it get bought. The plane storage situation is so bad at my house that I have a 33% NIB Cub stored at RTK's drugstore:eek: My wife made the statement that we didn't need a new garage as much as we needed a hanger:)

Hi,

The UPS truck arrived with 88" EDGE 540. I unpacked it and it has no damage. I check fit the wings, stab and rudder and it's looking good. The Ultracost looks really good.

I removed the wings, stab, rudder and canopoy and began on the fuse. First thing: I added some epoxy and tri-stock on the engine/firewall box,; then the inside of the fuse was glued and last thing was to seal the engine compartment. I won't be able to work on it until the weekend, so I'll post some pics then. I'm hoping I get the DA 50 and servos mounted on Sunday.

Regards

Chuck

I've been informed that thread on the other forum was written by someone that had next to no previous experience in gas planes.

I had an extra couple of hours today so I decided to see what I could get done. I'll say this, the first plane I bought from Tom was the Yak and it went together well. But in comparison, this plane is almost builds itself. I opened up all the pre drilled hard points in the contol surfaces and installed the 8/32 rod in the all the control surfaces. Record time! Then I removed all the Ultracoat for the aileron and elevator servo mounts. Used some more glue to make sure the labor over the pond didn't miss anything.

One thing I did find was that the boys over the pond must not have QA the left elevator servo mount. All the wood for the mount is on one side and the other side is very, very short. :D See below pic for the left and compare it to the right.

Other than this little issue everything is moving very, very fast. I might even be able to mount the motor tonight.

Regards,
Chuck

The guy that did that thread complained about the servo cut outs being too small, that was a dead give away he didn't have much experience

Lol mine where too, but I didn't complain just fixed it

Servos come in all different sizes. I would much rather have to make an opening bigger than have to make one smaller.

Flew mine again this weekend at the Tiffin Fun Fly, plane really runs great with the dle 55 in it. Its a really light flying airplane..

I also flew mine today. I only need to add a few mixes in my radio and it will be perfect! I had everyone at the field saying how nice and light it flys.

I did manage to work a couple of hrs on the Edge. I installed two Smartfly switches, installed the standoffs for the DA 50, mocked up location for the ignition module, cut the cowl and installed a servo in the wing. Things are actually moving along rather quickly considering it ususally takes me about four months to build an ARF. [:-]

I've attached some pic's of the progress and one pic shows the wing covered with a towel. I place the towel on the wing before I cut the head of the 8/32 bolt so it doesn't melt the Ultracoat.

Hey I'm thinking of getting this plane. I have a WH Edge 540V2 right now.
But I JUST LOVE the look of this plane. (GREAT JOB TOM!!)
I have a question for you, do you think a DA-50 with a MTW RE2 tuned pipe will fit in the tunnel?
The distance from the exhaust output on the DA-50 to the end on the pipe is 40"

cmircman 07-25-2009 02:49 PM

RE: PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE 88

Micheal i just measured mine and without some major mods there is no way it will fit. I really do not think you will need the tuned pipe on this plane even though extra power is always nice. I have a DL50 with a ks86 canister and it is perfect. Plenty of power for anything.

:)Just measured my tunnel box and from the center of the exhaust port to the back of the box is 24". No way without major mods will that pipe fit. I'm using a rear exit cannister on mine. It's about 22" and looks to fit perfectly.
Thanks
Barry

RE: PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE 88

:)I'm putting the cannister in right now. Just took a break to comment on here. I've got the engine mounted, the rudder mounted and pull/pull cables installed, the elevators are installed and trimmed out, the alilerons are installed and trimmed out.
Gotta get the cannister finished mounted, cowl cut, fuel tank installed, smartfly optical kill and batteries. I'm hoping to make some major progress on it tonight and tomorrow.

I flew the 100cc again today. Had a great group of flights. I'm really really starting to like that plane. I had some excellent low KE with it today and some great hovers and outstanding flat spins both upright and inverted. Lots of fun.

Hope this one is as nice to fly.

Thanks
Barry

RE: PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE 88

Barry,

Where are you going to mount your throttle servo?

Scooterpilot 07-27-2009 12:00 AM

RE: PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE 88

I finished the installation of the DA 50. The manual choke and the throttle servo are installed. I still have to run the fuel lines for the engine (filler line, vent line and line from the tank to the engine). The wheel pants are installed. I glued the rudder to the fuse. All that is left for the fuse is to complete the installation of the tail wheel. Now that the rudder installed I can do that. :D

All the servos are installed, so tomorrow if time permits I’ll hook up the linkage to all the control surfaces.
I noticed there is no pre-dilled hole(s) in the fuse for the wire coming from the wing servos into the fuse. Is there a particular location on the fuse that I should cut open so I can get the servo wire into the fuse to connect to the RX or should I just tailor that to my build?

Later in the week I’ll post some pics.

Looks like I’m going to have this model assembled in record time.

Regards,
Chuck
