44 gold start problem
over the last few flights with my 44 gold ive had problems on start up.
it spins up ok, lights up the gas and then lets the rotor spin down till it stops, as it does this the gas burns out of the tailcone!!!! then the starter comes back in and starts as normal.
it has allways been run on premium parafin and turbine oil and the rotor is free and not sticking. it has only done about 5 hours running over its 3 years of age.
any ideas what could be causing this????
thanks in advance

RE: 44 gold start problem
I think , i dont know for shore , but its your start temp .
wich ecu are you using ?
i had it to with my 44 engine.
but its normal .
the engine always starts , but sometimes ,the gas ignites to late , and the ecu wait a bitt longer to ingage the starter again.
what i did to fool the ecu , was carefully shaking the gasbottle , and the temp go's up ,and the starter spins inmediatly
i think there is no problem ,but if you dont like it, maybe you can set the preheat time to zero.
hope this helps.
Regards,
Martin.

RE: 44 gold start problem
I be interested to know the answer to this as mine does it too and it is brand new (maybe a couple of years old but first run about 2 weeks ago)[:@] One thing for sure is its not due to the min temp as mine is set at 100 degrees and the engine will sit there at 300 degrees without the starter running.
My ECU is a digitech FADEC.

RE: 44 gold start problem
If you have the proper data cable and have downloaded the Fadec program, you can make the proper adjustment in the "autostart parameters". It sounds as though the "RPM to reconnect starter" is to low. I usually set this to 3000 rpm.

RE: 44 gold start problem
Thanks Ron,
I do have the cable and went in to check the settings. I've adjusted the RPM to reconnect to 3000 RPM as you suggested (it was at 2000) but possibly more importantly, it had a pre-heat time of 2 secs which I think is too long. I've dropped this to 0 to see if that helps.
Thanks for the steer. I'd never have thought to check those settings

RE: 44 gold start problem
hi guys,
just to let you all know, i finaly got round to flying the 44 today, 1st start it did its problem!!!!!! and the throttling was slow and spluttering slightly, engine temp at idle was only 351 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!
checked the temp probe, only a couple of mm into the exhaust cone, reset the probe to 4 mm, retested the start up and hey presto, starts ok, put six flights on it with no problems.
thanks for all your replies and advice.
