91 AC muffler question
#1

Hi Troy, I hope that you had a great Thanksgiving.
My question si that I have a 91 ac I picked up used and had no muffler. A flying buddy gave me one with a exhaust pipe that screws into the head. It may be an older type of YS muffler?,.. it has a 2 pc design thats held together by 3 small screws. My buddy also has a 91 ac that his muffler is more like an older saito or os muffler, you know the ones, , the one pc ones that tapers down toward the end of it .My question is : is this bolted together muffler that he gave me a decent muffler to use on the 91, as long as I keep a check on the screws, or would it be more performance out of one like he is using?
Thank you Sir Troy. I can post a pic of it tonite if you need me to.

The stock YS muffler is the one you describe. It is a decent choice, I have used them with good success.
A little trick it to disassemble the muffler clean it up with denatured alcohol. Then re-assemble it with High Temp silicone gasket material. A small film of silicone to act as a gasket and also use it in the threads of the muffler to act as a thread locker for those 3 little screws. After it cures it will be difficult to get it apart and I have never lost the rear of the muffler using this technique.
As for the threaded stack that goes into the head. A few wraps of teflon plumber tape, and then use the jam nut to hold the part in the right position. I purchased a thin box end wrench from Sears Craftsmen Tools, that is the perfect fit for these jam nuts. You really have to hold the one side and tighten the jam nut against it. This will keep it from coming apart.
