Old 1.10 Problem
 

Dave,

I have one of the first production runs of the 1.10. I bought it when it first came out; within a couple month's of release. Problem is, I have got MAYBE 30 ounces of fuel through it. Caused me to dead stick everytime I flew it. I finally got frustrated and gave up after repairing the plane like 3 times from flame outs at take off. So it sat in my garage for well over a year. Now I'm trying to get it working again. It acts exactly the same now as then.

Parameters
Gas - Powermax YS20/20 (always sealed, brand new gallon this last time less than 2 weeks old)
Plug - OS Type F
Weather - 85 degreees @ sea level
Prop - standard, recommended size (I forget exactly what size APC, but seems right and is referenced in the owner's manual)
Tank - Sullivan, round 12 (?) ounce - this needs to be bigger. All lines on flared tubing and zip-tied. No leaks in system.

Symptoms
These are VERY consistent then and now. Amazingly so.
Starts cold great, idles fine, nice transistion, good high speed power and tunes well on the high speed needle. Turn to peak, then back off a tad on the rich side.
It runs this way, really nicely until about 3 minutes into it and it suddenly stops blubbering rich, then it stays this way. I let it go cold and it runs fine again - for 3 or 4 minutes. I have not adjusted the regulator from the factory setting.

I am not new to this game (20 years) and have had numerous 4 strokes and ducted fan engines, so I don't THINK it's me (but have been wrong before). I really, really like the way the engine works when it does, it just doesn't enough.

Any tips?

The crankcase is probably leaking intermittantly. Ditch the current fuel tank unless it's wrapped with filiment tape when it gets back.

It needs to come see service.

Crankcase leaking?? Where to make it die so rich? Like at the regulator?

Seems odd - I'd rather fix it myself as I've always done, unless it's a real manufacturing defect.

The leak is not constant and effects regulator operation. That's why you can never get it set properly.

Not necessarily a mfg. defect, but something we came up with that makes the engine perform better overall.

O.K. That makes sense. Will do. So where would the leak be at exactly? I'm not content to just operate things; I want to know how they work and don't, especially our engines.

Could be casting porosity, but can't tell 'til it gets here.
