YS troublesome?
I'm new here, so forgive me if I ask any really stupid questions.
I was considering the purchase of a new YS 110 in the near future, but it concerns me that many people on this forum have had issues not only with the 110, but with most of the YS engine line. I have read hundreds of threads and have come to the conclusion that 20 or 25% of these engines don't run properly right out of the box. I am sure that some of this is due to the inability of the user, but not all modelers are inept, and I would hope that 40+ years of experience in aeromodeling would allow me some chance of success. YS engines have been touted as the "best" four stroke engines in modeling , but I get the feeling is that this is just marketing hype and not the real truth. If the 20%+ figure is correct, these engines are the YUGO of R/C! Even if the figure is only 10%, that is truly awful in my mind. It appears to me that YS may have some serious QC problems. The overall thought by the members of my club is that YS engines are hardly worth the trouble even though when they run right they are very impressive. Another problem seems to be with obtaining replacement parts. At this point, I have some fear that if and when I do buy a YS engine, it will be a problem child. Any comments? Thanks in advance, Jim |
RE: YS troublesome?
I have a YS fz 63 that had an issue and it was replaced no questions asked. both engines (ran) run great. you have to set it up properly and break it in properly or you will have problems. nothing you cant figure out if you take the time. Saito 4 strokes are also noted for being tough to get set up right, so it just depends on if you are a "ford" man or a "chevy" man. I have both engine types and I have more problems with the Satio than the YS. I would buy another YS motor when I need one. like anything you buy now days that is produced in great numbers "lemons" do get by QC, just like "Fords" and "chevys" . Ultimately it depends on what you are comfortable with and how much tinkering with the motors you are willing to deal with. As far as parts go, when I need one it was available. hope this helps.

RE: YS troublesome?
YS Engines are complex machines, that produce more horsepower per displacement than any other model engine on the market.
Usually I would say that the problems folks have are operational and not Quality control related. These model engines operate differently than any other engines on the market. As a result of this some modelers struggle with their setup. For this reason I'm on here trying to help and offer advice. Over the years having worked on numerous motors and owned almost every different model, I can say that very few issues can't be resolved with a little understanding of what is going on in the engine. There are issues with problems out of the box and these problems are usually easy fixes. As with all products and engines you are relying on the service organization to fix those warranty issues and make them right. This is the difference between many engine brands and the YS engines in the North America. YS Performance takes very good care of its customers. If you have a problem they will make it right. For a High Performance competition level engine what more could you ask for. There are a bunch of engines out there and I would say its very slanted to take a position of 25% of the engines out of the box are trouble laden. I don't know the real numbers but from what i have discussed with Richard in Service the numbers in recent years are way below your estimates These engines may not be for everyone, but when power, transition, and performance are the criteria the Yamada engines fill the bill. Anyone that has the pleasure to enjoy one probably tell you the same thing. Troy Newman Team YS performance |

Flyer 69,
I've got 7 YS engines flying currently, with 3 additional new ones waiting for projects (they are a little addictive). Follow the instructions above and you should have no problems. I have sent one of my 3 110's back for warr. work and the service was FANTASTIC. Probably some of the best customer service in the industry! Jimmy Skids |
