glow plug heater
 

I'm new to glow engines and have tried two different Hot Shot 2 glow plug heaters on my first glow engine a YS 110. Frequently both glow heaters would shake off of the plug before I could get it taken off. Now the second one will no longer attached to the plug. Note that the engine is mounted horizontally, and that I've only been running this engine for one week.

My question is what glow plug heater do you suggest that I get?

Is there a glow heater that uses a LiPo and attaches with a wire rather than having all of that battery weight hanging off of an angry engine? (I like LiPo batteries.)

PS I have a YS63 coming in the mail and will use the same glow heater with that engine also.

I've tried most everything over the years and nothing lasts long, some even, as you found out, only a few starts.. So I went to the remote glow plug setups and have been happy since. Troy doesn't like them but I won't have an airplane without one. I really like the Hanger 9 setup.

Tim, thanks for your input. On-line I just discovered an OFNA Plug Driver that appears work off of 12v, and has only the weight of the connector on the glow plug. I'm going to see if one of the local hobby stores can get one of these in for me to try. Otherwise, I'll order one via the web.

I believe that I'm understanding more and more why this years venture into wet power from sailplanes started with two cycle gasoline engines. I have no idea why I thought that small airplanes with glow engines were a good idea...

I use this one and have been using this brand on my YS motors for more than 7 years. It has a twist and lock connection that seems to hold on pretty good even when the motor is side mounted.

I use this end on my glow drivers. They work really well. The headlock connector at the top of this page is the connector I choose. Seems to work the longest. I fly enough that I replace the connector about once a year.

I never liked the battery included versions like the ni-starter above. I have my engines mounted on Hyde Soft mounts. The engine will move with it starts up. These nistarter types will usually break. in fact usually they will snap right off on the first start.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to try the OFNA one next, and when that fails I'll try the Central Hobbies one.

Jimmy, the Hot Shot 2 also is "twist and lock", but it is more like "twist and fall off quickly".
