63 FZ Idle problems?
Can anyone help with this problem I am having with my second 63:
Prop 14*4 w 10500 rpm peak, O.S. f type plug, Wildcat 30% heli fuel(18% Oil?). Approx 1.5 gallon run time. approx 1.5 turns out main needle 1 turn out idle needle I just dont seem to be able to get a very reliable low tickover I tacho it at 2000rpm in normal attitude where it will hold steady, transition to full fine and acheive full power very easily. However when running at 2000 if I hold the plane vertical up it leans and dies within 10seconds if I hold it nose down it clogs up and dies again within 10 seconds, the motor is mounted at around 7 O'Clock and if I rotate the plane to inverted during tick over again the running is rough but it dos'nt die. There is fuel coming out of the carb opening when the motor is not running, the one way check valve is holding pressure very well. Valves have been checked and adjusted. My first 63 did run perfect straight out of the box no need to touch the idle needle at all however I was running the Model Technics Yamada 20/20 fuel which I plan to revert back to as soon as I can get some.... I am not confident to use this motor for long periods at tickover ie Harriers etc because it does seem to cut far to easily compared to my first. I have tried many different idle needle positions all of which has resulted in uneven tick over and dead stick landings. It is presently installed in a Global freestyle with a similar installation to the review http://www.rcuniverse.com/reviews.ph...w&reviewid=86. Am I expecting to much and are these tests a little to extreme? Does the regulator have any effect on the idle running? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rob T |

Bump the idle up to 23 or 2400. You might also try opening the regulator 1/2 turn or a bit more.

Wow now that is what I call a fast reply many thanks.
I had felt the idle was to low at 2000 but various other web based info states exactly 2000 will try 23-2400 and see how it goes, will also try changing the prop for a 13*4W which should help slow the plane a little more in the Harriers Does the regulator have any effect on the Idle? |

At 23/2400 the reg has a little effect on the idle. At 2000 it does not. We never try to run them that slow as they are seldom reliable.

Hi dave,
Tried out your advise today, found with a tacho mounted on the nose I couldnt get a steady tickover at all set it at 2500 opened her up full then down to tickover only to find it stoped at anywhere between 2500 to 2800 then proceed'ed to drop slowly down to 1700 where it usually cut. Tried turning the regulator out 1/4 tun at a time but no difference. Set the reg back to approx flush rechecked the high end needle then proceeded to turn out the low end needle in order to make it sound hard and make the transition struggle then I would know it was to lean. The low end needle is now nearly three turns out and at last it will hold a tickover at 2200-2300 for ten mins then transition to full with hardly a splutter it will start with a back flip against compression off the spinner.. great it sounds to good to be true, and it is. It still it refuses to tickover even at 2400 at any attitude if I hold the aircraft nose up it still leans and dies nose down she goes very rich and dies. Question? should I still now try to adjust the reg' out to cure the problem. Many thanks Rob T |

The regulator might BE the problem. I'd would get this thing in for service as something is really not correct.
