stripped spurs can only come from a few things
* simple abuse, like landing jumps on high traction surfaces with the throttle pegged
* worn out pinions, the alloy pinions wear over time and get sharpe and lead to premature wear of the spur
* mis-set gear mesh, while it should be easy on the Detta's people have been known to do it wrong
* binding somewhere in the drivetrain
(in 2+ years of owning mine, I've never stripped one)

Hmmm..... No binding in the drivetrain.
Just running it up and down my street not jumping at all no abuse (this time)
brand new Robinsons Metric 16t pinion
Set mesh with a piece of paper, smooth as a babies behind
Any other Ideas?

2 years never stripped? Really?!?!? what is your setup?

No binding in the drivetrain. .... Are you sure? When was the last time you took the car apart and checked everything, including all the bearings?
Just running it up and down my street not jumping at all no abuse (this time). .... Abuse can lead to longterm issues, so you could have done whatever it is long ago, and forgotten it, and now it's a reoccuring problem.
brand new Robinsons Metric 16t pinion .... Are they .06 mod pinions, or is it possible that you're using standard .05 mod 48 pitch pinions they "seem" like they mesh OK, but quickly wear out spurs.
Set mesh with a piece of paper, smooth as a babies behind. .... piece of paper? what kind of paper. if you're using that "trick" you need to be using a page out of the phone book. regular paper is too thick and leads to too loose a mesh and faster spur wear.
Any other Ideas? .... These trucks are designed to be run in the dirt, and running them on pavement people often do things (slamming on the brakes, fast reversing, intentional spinouts, etc.) that put high strain on the drivetrain. Spur gear is the highest risk and weakest link, since it's meshed with a metal pinion, and the quickest thing to go bad.... Also, it's advisable to run street treads (bet you're not) when running on asphalt or concrete as the pin tires don't give or slip at all.

2 years never stripped? Really?!?!? what is your setup? .......Yup, same original spur. What do you mean, "my set-up?

I mean what Motor and pinion do you use. The Detta is brand new from LHS to replace my old shelf queen and no there was no binding. Paper I use is standard printer paper. I was running it on the street no hard braking no spin outs, reverse locked out. However the Ammo 5100 does tend to pull wheelies in its mid range when blasting up the street so i'm sure thats hard on the spur. The only reason I was running it on the street is because my backyard track is dirt and patchy grass that really chew up the spur. Here is the [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEX39&P=7]pinion[/link] is that not right one? If not could you point me to the correct one.
Thanks

That'll do it, it's about twice as thick as what you should use (take a page out of the phonebook)

However the Ammo 5100 does tend to pull wheelies in its mid range when blasting up the street so i'm sure thats hard on the spur.
That'll do it too, it's part of the problem with running those bigbore high torque motors.

I ran the stock VR3 motor last year, and have been running the Mongoose this year.

I dont think its the mesh! I have never run a Mongoose but did try a mamba. The small can motors just overheat and cog real bad on the heavy Detta ST. Bottom line till they make a slipper or Hot Racing makes a Titanium spur like for my RC18 its Im not going to be happy. Too bad, now I have two shelf queens[&o] Oh well, off to another project.

sorry to hear that, but metal spur gears won't solve your problem either.
and as long as you overmotor any vehicle you'll have problems ripping the drivetrain out of them.
I'd suggest scaling back your motor to something more reasonable.

Just not true! My rc18 has complete metal gears and works flawless I can beat the snot out of the drivetrain no problems. Sad thing about the RC18 is the steering, chassis flex and suspension. It tends to get a bit squirrelly, where the Detta you can really pour it on and it just asks for more.

OK, you're right and even the companies that make the gears are wrong.

not sure what kind of driving you are doing.. but even with my neu motor,, the only way i would destroy my spur is if i went to a smaller pinion,, 13/45

i would make sure the motor isnt moving or maybe put thread lock on the screws...

are you using the mesh plate... ???

I thought it was the torque of the motor on the little mount but if you are not having any problems with the wicked Neu then it must be because I ditched the mesh plate !
So you are using a 13t pinion? Is it stock or a robinson's?
Thanks

the only way to get a good mesh without the plate is to use lockwashers along with threadlock,,,, but the setting of the mesh must be dead on...,, the paper trickis the bestway...

but the plate is prefered since it takes the guess workoutof it.... I will post later ,, a series of gearing options using the mesh plate as it relates to the spur gear used,,, 41t ,, 45t,,, 49t

my current gearing for offroad dirt 10th scale track is 16/45

I did try the 3 hole before but did not seem to mesh right. I think I remember, I had to ditch it to mesh it. I will try it again.
Thanks Jaejw

I still hate plastic gers![:'(]

I don't see anything against plastic gears. Meshing isn't a problem for me and they are cheap and lightweight. The aren't noisy too like some metal gears are. Metal gears are good in diffs where it is needed, but a spur should be plastic or delrin imo.

I do have balldiffs front and rear, Ti-PB's and cvd's. All the other upgrades are mostly bling, but there was an improvement in handling with the upgrade shocks. With the stock shocks, I was unable to achieve proper ride height in the "laying down" position, with the rear shocks. Now the rear-end follows the front-end alot better, especially under power.

It's amazing to me how durable and tough the ST is. The Ammo doesn't run hot and I don't even reach half throttle on my track. I was using the Atomic engine mount, but switched back to the stock mount. The shape of the Atomic, in relation to the gear cover, was allowing dirt to pass and getinto the gear mess. This was chewing up some gears. Not a problem since re-installing the stock engine mount.

Been doing some upgrades to the track, will post pics in a few days.

That means you're running too big a motor.

Like taking a 200mph Indy Car to the local 1/4 mile shorttrack.

No Big Is Too Big.

Besides, the Indy car would murder every other car there.

It actually means I need to build a bigger track. My track is only 30 x 40', with 5' lanes. It was built for mini-t's, that raced on it for almost 3 years with nothing more powerful than an Insane engine.

If you build it, He will come.

You must have a lot of space to be able to expand the track.

My property is 300'+ x 150'+(about 1.2 acres). I used to have a 85 x 110', 1/8th track in another part of the yard, but it took up the nicest part of the yard. I'm considering a 60 x 90' in that area that would accomodate a Slash, crt .5, Mini-t and Vendetta, anywhere from 6' to 8' lanes. The Vendetta is fun on the current track, and I run it hard. However, it would be nice to let it stretch it's legs a bit more.
