Chaos TRUGGY! :D

I took one of my beater TLT bodies (Tamiya Tiny Little Truck/Rock Buster) and tried it on for size on the Chaos...not bad! I originally tried it with the body going all the way down the sides; however they splayed out since the pipe and RC box stick out a bit, so I cut it shorter...figured it looks a bit beter. I think it looks pretty good!

yeah the tires i have, are pretty good better than stockers, and the ones i linked shouldn't be bad either, not super great in loose stuff but shoulidn't be too bad at all not a whole ton of power with these, when you compair them to a 1/10 BL st truck...

well i have concluded taht duratrax vendetta diffs are 100% incompatable with chaos diffs, :( but the driveshafts are a perfect fit, if we can get them about 3 or 4 mm shorter [:-] so there is hope... i think

Can someone post a pic of the throttle link setup? I would like to run bigger tires/wheels on my chaos, is it possible to run bigger wheels with the 12mm hex adapter(mine needs new tires). Had it running this weekend pull starter was bad so got to get a new one. Im also lookin to pick up anothre one for backup.

Hey Lug,

What do you mean by driveshafts? The dog bones? Sorry to hear about the diffs aren't compatible...bummer!

Glad you guys like the truck body too! I have another one painted really nice which I'm debating about cutting up for the Chaos.

Yeah Ken...I very much liked the truck body. I'm constantly on the lookout for something unique to differentiate my little cheeser from the rest of you clowns.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy

Well, I muddled over making a 2-speed Chaos again...trying to see if there is a way to make it work and it looks like it would be quite difficult. Too many things just don't fit the layout and would need extensive modifications, special parts and a complete layout change. I'll mull it over some more as to whether I want to make this a special project. Special projects can end up becoming quite a big commitment in time, resources and sanity for me. [sm=stupid.gif]

I ran the NB16 again yesterday. Still having trouble adjusting that darn 2-speed. The adjustment screw is tiny (1.5mm) and you basicaly can't see if the hex key is in or not (very tough to get it in too), so it's a guess each time as to whether you're actually adjusting it or not. Worse yet, as I was running it, a car came down the street, so brought it back at full clip towards me and I hit the brakes only to see it start somersaulting. It ended up that one of the screws holding one of the rear upper links stripped out from the rear tower and so the rear wheel was flopped loose! I couldn't believe that they used such a small screw which didn't even fully thread into the upright to hold such a high stress part. I replaced it with a longer bolt and a lock nut.

Sooo...once again I got out the Cheapos and was terrorizing the neighborhood again...seeing if I can get the volunteer fire neighbor tricked into running out. LOL. Suddenly a brown lab dog about a block down came out and started chasing the Chaos at a good speed. No worries...I quickly turned it around, full speed, right to me, full stop and picked her up. Nice, cool, tight and controlled. Then I got ready for the dog to jump on me. :)

This is what i like about the Chaos. It's fast for it's size, sounds awesome at speed, beautiful engine, good handling and the brakes (while poorly designed since it's only on the fronts - lock the center diff or fill with heavy oil/grease) actually work just right for me. I routinely can bring it from full speed right up to my shoes. The other minis I have can't really do that. They will either skid or have mushy brakes. (Note: still breaking in the KMI.)

I agree with Vicdat...the beauty in these buggies is that they are light. [sm=thumbup.gif]

LOL!

Hey Vicdat, I actually like the "Clowny" body. :D

I remember years back working like crazy with 4 separate lexan paints and a clogging airbrush on my Traxxas Nitro Hawk body to make it look like this (same colors except it also had black on the back and it was airbrushed edges).

Have you seen the "unacceptable-excuse-for-a-vehicle-body-even-by-1970's-standards" Megatech mini?

I was searching for the trinity metal gears and cant find them. I did find a hopup for the nb16 with the same part #. Description is Metal Drive w/ Outdrive 32008. Could this be a coincidence that it is the exact discription and part # as the trinity part?

i just depleted rctoyhouse.com stock of these. I paid $22 for 3 shipped.

I've tried to read most of the posts on this thread but maybe you guys can help me. I actually havent had the pinions strip yet, I just have the outdrives strip out. I even CA'd the fronts cups but they also broke free. For whatever reason all the power want to go to the front wheels. I saw someone post that they drilled the diff housing and used a cap. Are you doing this so that you can add silicone oil in a semi sealed configuration? How about inside the diff? Are you using silicone grease inside the diff itself and oil outside the diff housing? Should I spool the center diff? I havent been able to get a single run with full power yet. I think I have topped out at 5 mph. I believe someone said all the stock componenets work if you keep it properly lubed. I do have the stock motor. Can someone tell me exactly the setup that they are running without problems? What im looking for is what weight oil/grease inside the diff housing for front, mid and rear. And what oil/grease outside the diff. At this point I would be happy getting 1 full speed run out of this thing.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy

It's been like 8 months since I sold my Chaos and I am starting to miss it.  I check out this thread now and then and read your guy's posts.  The one I had ran like a champ, whoever had it before me must of broke the motor in correctly.  It was tuned right from the start, never had any problems with gears or anything.  I added a few upgrades while I had it.  I ended up selling it because the local track I go to don't allow nitros. [:o]  So I would end up just driving the Chaos in an empty parking lot and taking my electric R/Cs to the track.

Now I miss the little buggy...it was one fast little ride!  Might have to look into finding another one.

Hey, why don't you just ask the crazy Chaos-head who owns a NB16? (Moi.) :D

One of the first things I did when I got the NB16 was unmount the diff housings from the chassis to compare it vs. the Chaos. I initially determined it to be much too different; however I've been meaning to go back to check the pinion again.

Well tonight I did a tear down and actually took the NB16 pinion out and put it into the Chaos diff housing. Unfortunately there is some fitment issues. The NB16 pinion is about 30% larger (eyeballing it) and has 14 teeth (vs. 12). It might be able to fit into the Chaos; however it will be a tight fit and you may need to shim one side of the diff quite a bit to make it work. I managed to close the diff housing and there was a lot of friction. I'm not sure if it will work as a stock swap (may make quite a racket if it does) and I'm not going to try making it work since it may ruin other parts due to the friction (my choice, but you guys may have better luck).

An alternative option I considered (for those who have stripped/ruined diffs) was the possiblility of buying a complete rear metal diff assembly for the photon/vulcan (NB16 clones) for $19 from gotnitroonline.com (also shown is the metal diff gear and outdrive for $4.29/$4.99) and I think the shipping/handling is only $3 (from what I recalled):

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy

Also the rear Vulcan diff assembly (with plastic gears) is on sale for $10. Again, you would have to see if it fits (mounts, links, pins and all)...don't assume it does. It looks close to me in many areas, but I do see that the chassis has to be redrilled since one set of mounting screws is wider apart than the other.

5mph and all power to the front? Sounds like something in the rear is stripped or loose. I suggest filling the center diff with heavy grease (I used Team Associated 100K diff fluid) or locking it and if you still have the would same problem, check and tear down the rear.

You can also do a quick check by removing the 4 chassis screws off the rear diff, putting the tires down on the table and try to spin the drive cup with your fingers while holding the assembly down to see if something is loose/broken. It shouldn't really move and there should be resistance (don't use too much force or you may break something not broken...you be the judge). Good luck!
