Default Incredible Hobby Shop Finds

How about a thread on those rare occasions when we find something at the local hobby shop that isn't way over priced?

Here's are a few of my finds:

1.) A NIP Cox .049/.051 Tank Mount for $2.00. (Seen these go for $15 on the 'Bay before!)
2.) A NIP Tee Dee .010 glow head for $3.00
3.) A couple of Kavaan Baby Bee tank extenders for $1.00 each.

...and my latest acquisition, a NIB - albeit a rather tattered and torn box - Cox T.D. .051 for $25.

So, how about it guys, what 1/2A (or other) bargains have you come across?

I bought a whole batch of "perfect" brand control line fuel tanks in 1/2A sizes the other day, an old time hobby shop that was bought out by an art supply place was cleaning out old stuff - like 29 cents each, 19 cents for a couple of 'em..

I Rolled into my local H-town the other day after they had moved like 2 doors down in the same strip center. I am very familiar with their inventory as I go there about every Saturday. Well , looking in the glass case I spied a Norvel 7l plug old enought to have a yellowed price sticker for 5$ that I guess turned up in the move/cleanup. So not a big treasure, but always nice to get ahold of a extra plug for a decent price the way things are going. Todd

Nothing recently. But when I was a kid building and flying control line models there was a sporting goods store that dabbled in some model airplane stuff from back before my time. No one knew that he has some stuff left and I used to buy my Perfect tanks, wheels and other hardware for 1/2 the sticker price. Back in those days we didn't have increases every other week so 1/2 was still 1/2 but some of the stuff was priced with late 50's vintage prices so it was a double score.

(1) 3 NIB .010's, red original version, for $20.00 each? [sm=lol.gif]

(2) 12 .010 glow heads for $1 each?

(3) 2 boxes of Jetex Scorpion 600 Red Spot pellets for $5.00 each in the corner of an ex hobby shop turned bicycle shop?

Hmm, what else? Got em thinking now..

About a year ago I was in a shop in Maryland and they had a couple of racks of old NIB Cox stuff - I asked the owner how much and he said all the Cox stuff was 1.00 a bag. Lots of glow heads ( .010, .020, .049, .090 ) and rebuild kits and needle valves for .020 TD's and so on. Said he hated Cox and wanted all the stuff out of there - so I helped him out. He had a number of Norvel glow plugs and parts at cost as well.

Nothing so grand, but I once got a good deal on a Tee Dee .049 at my LHS, only to find that the factory had also stuck an .09 reset tool in the box. This was about the time when they moved from CA to CO so I guess they just had extra stuff. This was great since I did not have a reset tool for my .09's.

A friend of mine is a slot car freak, always reading slot car magazines from the sixties. He found an old ad for J.E. Pike & co, the importers of Dynamic equipment. He decided to go to the listed address as it was a house address, I told him he was crazy because the ad was from 1966.

Well, long story short, he came away with half a pickup full of prime slot car gear, many brands, many parts. The big issue was what he told me next. They guy had old model aircraft engines. I arrainged a meeting and to keep the story short again I ended up with four ED Hunters, two ED Hornets, innumerable ED parts, five AM diesels, A McCoy 60 Redhead, a Mills 1.3, OS 35 (early sixties), nine Johnson engines (CS, SS, 29R) An almost mint Oliver Tiger, an ED Mk2, a DC Manxx, a Cannon sparkie, other spark ignition bits and pieces, several basket case engines, a pile of Johnson parts, Dynamic control line sets, Cox engines and parts, Frog parts, misc pistons, pins, rods, cranks etc.etc.etc. I actually forget some of what I have. It cost me $800.00 all up. Not a bad price for such a pleasure overload.

Guys, always follow up on the old ads.

Lukesp, that is insane dude! I've bought NIB Norvels at swap meets for $20 a pop, but those days are likely gone. Oh, got some NIB Killer Bee's for $20 a pop, too.

It blew my mind, finds like that don't come easy.

What I didn't mention was the fact that my slot car friend mentioned the engines to another person, he decided I wasn't moving fast enough . I had already phoned the owner of the stuff and I wanted to keep it all passive. It was several months before the owner decided what he wanted for it, and now, because of my friend's tactless big mouth, I had a collector bearing down on the haul at a rate of knots. He also happened to be a friend of mine which made things a tad ugly, something I never wanted to happen. I had to move fast. Collectomania brings out the worst in people, unfortunately.

A number of years ago (maybe late 90's?) I was dabling into large scale CO2 stuff. A hobby shop I dealt with had a bunch of NOS Davis conversions for the Cox engines. I bought a few 049 heads and 020 heads, a few tanks including the largest one they sold, fillers, etc all for under $100. I built an opposed twin 049, and a few singles and even flew an Astroflight Viking old timer with the opposed twin. Then I lost interest in the CO2 - and sold all the gear for about 4X what I paid for it!

Wow, that is a find x10!! Please dont tell me it was still in the package!

I once found an rr-1 at a swap meet for $10, I think I was the only one who knew what it was. No one else wnted the cox "junk". I later sold it on ebay for about $300 But that was a while ago, maybe 90 or 91.

It's not new, but it is in the package with spare gaskets, screws etc. wrapped in paper. I haven't pulled it out to look at all the stuff as I didn't have time (needed to make flights and connections to get back to Detroit, then it was 'off to work again'). There are a few marks on the case and it's stuck from age-apart from that the motor is low time and has great looking anodizing. This past year a revelation hit me that I really don't want to "collect" anymore and only buy engines I will fly, so this one will go off to Ebay or whatever to fund more Norvels and maybe a Profi .049/.06. I'm up to nearly a dozen just this year alone-I consider these purchases to be buying for the rest of my life, hence the high numbers.

But yeah, I got out of there like I owed the shop keeper Malt Liqour Money!

Well, off to the bank to get $$ for the new-in-sealed-blister-packaging early "Northern Velocity" Norvel .049RC BigMig.

Been buying a few reedies of late for some CL planes I'm building, happened to pick up a golden bee which was described as "used" but turned out to be new never run, the piston was as shiny as the day it left cox's factory The other engine was described as an unused 1958 babe bee. This was just plain wrong, judging by the photo on feebay it looked to be about late 60's or early 70's vintage and looked well used. But on arrival the internals were spotless not a mark to be seen gave it a quick clean up with steel wool and she now sparkles like she deserves. Must say though that these early .049s seem to be of better fit and finish than the later models... 80's 90's and 2000+ the bearing surfaces seem to be cut much cleaner and the piston to cylinder fit is really superb! Think I may target more of these new old stock engines [8D]

Babe Bee feebay No: 150171703934 $11.50 Plus Postage

Golden Bee feebay No: 300146710091 $21.00 Plus Postage

Great looking engines! .... and a steal at that. I agree, as many do on here, that the older stock has much better finishes, tolerances, and fits.

LeRoy Cox and his shop knew what they were doing.

I am hoping to get a few more Golden Bees like yours... great looking engines.

Thats just a little south of BFE There list price was $7.50 ( every thing 1/2 off) so that dates the stuff. AND ITS ALL DARK BROWN. I didn't know it came in brown. Igot all they had.[:@]

I’m quite positive that this post cannot possibly be off topic so therefore the implication is that in Gainesville, Mo the True Value IS the only LHS in the metropolitan area? I have heard that gutter pipe has been used as the basis for fuselages for larger models, but would like to see construction pics of your 1/2A adaptation.
Al
P.S. Beautiful! I’ll let someone else comment on the dark brown. Phewww
P.P.S Wasn't it in BFE where the fellow said 'Most guys just ride the camel to town'?
Sorry guys, it's getting late.
