I have to say, I just received this model from tower hobbies and it is the nicest arf I have ever seen. It is so well crafted, but I heard a lot about the pins so I put ca (a drop) on every single pin, is that all I need I put the ca on the top of each pin (pins are on one side only) or should I take a small pice of wood or fiberglass and glue it above each pin? I cant wait to fly this thing today. Oh and the instructions are VERY vauge on fuel tank mounting, any tips? it seems very loose. Thanks

I changed my gear out to a Great Pains aluminum gear. I used Du-Bro 1/2-20 blind nuts and nylon bolts to attach the new gear.
I'm not completely thrilled with this plane.....it's not heavy, but it flies like it is......I can't explain it.....it's very capable, but something is missing.......I think I have to fly it more and maybe then I can come up with a way to describe my thoughts......hell, maybe it's just me.

NY, I tugged very hard on all my surfaces and they were fine, so I didn't make any modifications....I do check them after each flight though.
As far as the fuel tank, I trashed the stock one. I used a Sullivan Flex tank.....8 oz I think (maybe 10oz.) It fit very well and it was snug in the former. I stuffed foam (light foam, not the foam rubber stuff) all around the tank compartment after I installed the tank, then used a scrap piece of wood across the fuselage behind the tank to hold it securely in place.

After seeing a few pics this plane seems very simular to the Irvine Wild Card. In looks and covering.

Man, I thought this thread had stopped only to find that I had stopped recieving notification of posts instead!!!!!!
Certainly been a few new posts since I last saw it...

I'm still flying number 2 Funstar, and still love it; The only changes has been to swap the GMS47 with a OS 46FX, and move the CG even further back. The GMS became a dog to tune when in the offset engine mount (which seems to be a common problem with them, but they work great when upright!!!) and was the cause of Funstar number 1 being replaced with Number 2!!! The 46FX is a dream!!!

I havnt had any sign of the fus cracking, but the aileron pins needed CA.

Heres a couple of pics of the colour scheme on the wings... I took these so I could fly my Funstar/scheme on G2(if anyone wants this scheme for G2, I can e-mail the .DDS or .TGA file, but bare in mind they are around 6Meg...).

The Funstar is the same plane as the Wildcard. See post 32 of this thread.

First flight tomorrow moring, Im really nervous........... In a good way
I had an avistar for like 400 flights, then it crashed, I gave up, got a gas heli and have been flying them, then I got some elecric airplanes and did 3-D stuff, now im back to the gas, and that old 46fx that used to keep dead sticking on me is haunting me, looking me straight in the eyes. THe electrics nevery had tuning problems....hmmm I wonder why
I will videotape it, and if its a spectacular crahs, or if it flies and anyone who is considering getting one wants to see it, I will post a link later tomorrow. Damn, I have to go to bed, just so nervous

Crash and burn I will have the video up later, I reversed the ailerons, long story, it splintered into 20 billion pieces, not pretty, but a cool video

WOW today IT actually flew, it was AMAZING overspeed and full aerobatics at less than 1/4 throttle. Had some landing issues with a fence, minor damage but this plane is incredible. I am ordering another right now, and fixing up my current one for another flight tonight!

YES! even with heavy damage, I got 4 flights, with perfect landings in long grass. My question is, even with full flaps landing speed was approx 12-15 mph (just above stall speed) I heard it could harrier in for landing, whats going on? I have stock setup using s3003 servos, and a micro 8ch receiver, with os 46fx, and top flight 11X6 prop. Why the high speed?

Mine harriers in no-problem...

I hold quite a bit of up elevator to hold nose up, a little throttle for control and NO flap...

Seems to work fine...

I'm gonna guess that you've got too much pitch on the prop, perhaps a 12x4 or a 12.25x3.75 will work better for you.

@ Everyone: What prop are you using with this bird (include engine)?

Why the high speed? 11x6 prop. I use an APC 12.25x3.75 with an OS 46Fx. This plane will really slow down with this combination.

I understand the pitch thing, but I have the throttle off for the whole approach and landing (on grass) it still comes in very hot, and stall speed seems very high. I must have messed up, balance seems within limits ( on the foward end) maybe shifting cg back a little?
Thanks

Also, What happens if I put the inverse of flaps (spoilerons) I think, should I have an elevator mix, does that act as an airbrake, and does it serve any purpose?
Also I dont understand the elvator mixing with flaps thing, I just have a knob that I turn. Should there be a mix, and if so what help does it do. (Im using a 9C so if you know mixes for that plz)
Thanks for all the help.

NYjr13, try moving your CG back and using what cmsrp suggested, doing both of these should slow that plane down.

I have my CG at the 120mm back, this placed my 720 NiMh just in front of the elevator servo, so you'll be ok by doing so. What I suggest you do is go to your local auto supply shop and purchase the wheel stick on weights, add 1/2 oz at a time until you feel comfortable, once you have the cg you want then once home put that plane on a cg machine and make the adjustments by moving the battery back, then removing the stick on weights.

Oh, thanks, I think also my problem is that I have a 370 cc fuel tank in it. And it behaves very strangley when flaps are deployed, will try the batt pack thing. And what about the inverse of flaps?

And what about the inverse of flaps?
The term you are looking for is spoilerons. Spoilerons increase drag and decrease lift-not a good combination for landing. So, no you don't want to use spoilerons for landing. Flaperons increase drag and increase lift, this is what you use for landing. I have my Funstar set up with flaperons, but find their use unnecessary for landing. Your Funstar should come in very slow without them. I only use this feature to fly extremely slow.

I understand the pitch thing, but I have the throttle off for the whole approach and landing (on grass) it still comes in very hot, and stall speed seems very high.
No offense, but I don't believe you do understand all the effects of pitch. The lower pitch props give you more drag, so at lower rpm the engine acts as a brake.

With the OS 46FX and an APC 12.25x3.75 in the Funstar you should be able to slow it down to a crawl. If not there are only three other factors that will inhibit this, cg that is too far forward, excessive overall weight and/or too high of an idle speed. With this combination I've called out "landing" on final and had other pilots at the line jokingly ask, "When?"

Here's my setup.

720 NiMh located just behind the elevator servo = 120mm CG.
All servos are mini servos HS-225's except the throttle its an HS 81.
6 channel receiver.
4-40 all the way around.

Total weight 4.6 pounds.

I have only standard servos, i cant buy mini.

assaf87, the Funstar will perform fine with the TT Pro 46 and standard servos. I find the 46FX and Pro 46 to be very similar in performance. I have the OS 46FX in mine and have never felt the need for more power. I'm also using standard Hitec HS 425 servos on elevator and ailerons, and an HS 475(standard high torque) for the rudder. Mini servos are nice for weight savings, and yes, weight is very important on this type of plane, but not a necessity to make this a fun plane to fly. Mine's a blast.

so for conclusion you say that it will be ok ?
or the performance will drop?

I'm building the Fun Star. There are two 4mm X 25mm X 98mm pieces of wood and four small triangle pieces in a seperate plastic bag. I can't find a place to put them. Anyone know where they go ?
Thanks, Chuck
