The HS55s ought to work fine (they did on mine, if a little slower than I like). It really sounds like mechanical binding. That could be the grips. I'd be disconnecting the servos and making sure everything is free to move.
A small amount of play in the swash and in the HS55 output is normal as long as it's small.
