ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Well, I've wanted to do something a little different so having been deliberating for some time about going the Hacker C50 route in my Impact I have now decided to go to the complete other end of the scale and put a ZDZ40 rear exhaust gas engine in it
With a full length pipe, 3-blade prop and soft mounts it should be quiet but still have plenty of grunt!
Just been out measuring things and from what I can see the motor will fit in fully enclosed. May have to cut a tiny hole for the spark plug cap!
Will keep you updated of the progress! Now, where do I get a ZDZ40 from...........
Rgds,
Mark

traitor
BTW, the Moki is 45cc and a little bit heavier - plus I think 40cc is enough - don't you?

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
check with John or Stephen Simm--in Merseyside- they are running a ZDZ40 in a model I whipped up - If you get your pipe and spark timing properly sorted - you will find the power is spectacular.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
I mean the mackay petrol engines, there's a 30cc mackay that can spin a 20x11 at 8000rpm, pretty good, didn't mean the moki moki's.
I know what you meanm thats the one thing I am concerned about waiting around for the packs to charge. Thinking about getting a YS for the C140 afterall.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi Mark,
Interesting stuff... Petrol power in F3A would be nice, simply by reducing fuel costs and complexity of the engine... Now if only DA would make a rear exhaust version of the DA50...
BTW, the ZDZ engines are available through Amelung in Germany [link=http://www.zdz-motor.de/]http://www.zdz-motor.de/[/link]
For a pipe look at the new ES composites pipe made specifically for the ZDZ 40: [link=http://www.escomposites.com/test_stand.htm]http://www.escomposites.com/test_stand.htm[/link]
Good luck, and let us hear the result!

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Thanks Morton, that was the pipe I had my eye on!
Well, thought I'd make a start on my Impact so I spent a hour or so cutting out the openings at the front of the fuselage. Pics here.....

or direct page www.composite-arf.co.uk/Impactbuild1.htm
Will try and keep things up to date!

when you boys finally put your toes in the water - be sure to do some bench runups and learn how the pipe interacts with timing setups /proploads .
it is a learning curve - not really hard tho.
You will definately like the quiet performance.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Mark, I am very interested in doing an impact/gasoline setup. I have talked to JAS and he wants to do one as well. I have very little funding in my research department but just enough in my developement! Please keep us posted on your progress. I still need to get some photos together for your site, which looking good.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
The Abbra kit weighs 1.8kilo out of the box. The Impact weighs 2.5kilo out of the box. that is 1.2lb diff! Jaroslav's Abbra shown in my earlier post with zdz40re and es cf pipe, standard jr servos and a light battery setup weighs 10.9lb. The Abbra flys and presents just like the pl prod Partner - you cannot tell the diff. I have an Impact on order now for over 2 months - I should get it any day. I plan to install zdz40re with es cf pipe. It will make a nice cheap good looking practice plane - I don't count on making weight limit. Dick Hanson scratch built me a 2m gas pattern plane at 10.5lb but it wasn't cool. people want a full composite ship. gas engines are getting lighter and more powerfull, composite planes are getting lighter and stronger, some day there will be many popular 2m gas/pattern kits to choose from. for now you better send your Impact with all equipment to Dick and pray like hell.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
I thot it was cool- but then I am a strictly form follows function guy
the plane was built from about a hundred bucks worth of wood parts. and a couple of rolls of Monokote.
Not the same as 1500 bucks worth of composite workand that is a reasonably priced one- I saw one Joan Rivers look alike that was quoted at being over 3 grand.
Course -the plane didn't know it was poor and ugly - it just went ahead and flew like it was one of the Botoxed rich kids.

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
The Abbra kit weighs 1.8kilo out of the box. The Impact weighs 2.5kilo out of the box. that is 1.2lb diff
Fuselage = 590g
Cowl = 70g
Canopy = 104g
Rudder = 90g
Left Wing = 414g
Right Wing = 418g
Left Stab = 112g
Right Stab = 112g
Wing Tube = 90g
U/C Legs = 90g
Wheel Pants = 60g
Total of 2150g = 76oz = 4lbs 12oz or 2.1Kilo
So only 9 or 10oz different. I admit the Abbra is nice and light but it would seem the Impact isn't quite as "fat" as you may think!
VERY rough figures would be 4.75lbs for airframe, 4.5lbs for engine, prop, header, pipe etc, 1lb for radio is 10.25lbs. That leaves 12oz for 'bits' to come in at 11lbs

Mark

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Thanks for breaking that down Mark! It looks doable. I am a wanna be beginner in pattern and most of all I need a good first ship that flys very good without being hindered by being over weight. Keep up the good work. !~)

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi,
The SM30 looks like an interesting idea as well. The weight is lower than the ZDZ 40, but the power seems to be adequate at approx. 3,5HP.
SM30 technical data taken from the web-site below:
Capacity: 30.2ccm
Power: 3,53PS @ 8500 U/min
Weight: 1145g incl. ignition
3 main crankshaft bearings
Connecting rod with 2 needle bearings
5 ported cylinder design
Rear exhaust and rear intake
Membrane pump carb (Walbro)
Props:
2 blade: 18/8 to 24/8
3 blade: 18/6 to 22/8
More info on the SM line of engines here: [link=http://www.modellexclusiv.de/]http://www.modellexclusiv.de/[/link]

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Aargh, why is nothing ever simple!! The last thing I expected was several choices when it came to a petrol pattern model
The SM30 is 10.5oz lighter - that is quite a lot in the scheme of things. Also, it isn't going to be as powerful as the ZDZ40 which may be a good thing??!
Hmmm, you're a pattern pro, which would you go for Morten?
Rgds,
Mark

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Too bad you cant go through the bins at their warehouse based on variability from Marks you could put together a light setup.
You'll need a light one to be sure of coming under 11 lbs w/ the ZDZ40.
Weights for my Impact:
ounce grams
Fuse 23.2 657.72
Canopy 3.6 102.06
Tunnel Floor 2 56.7
Chin Cowl 2.4 68.04
Socket 0.4 11.34
Hstab L 3.4 96.39
Hstab R 3.6 102.06
Wing Tube 4 113.4
Wing L 14.1 399.735
Wing R 14.1 399.735
Rudder 2.6 73.71
Tail Post 0.1 2.835
Firewall 1.9 53.865
Gear Formers 1.6 45.36
Gear Plate 0.6 17.01

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
Hi Mark,
I'm no Pro (that is I'm not sponsored by anyone), but I have been flying pattern for 7 or 8 years now... I don't know which engine to pick, but I guess I would go for the lightest and most powerful option. I have no experience with either the SM30 or ZDZ40, but based on the specs the SM30 seems to be the petrol option, which is most likely to come in under 5 kg's in the Impact.
In my years in pattern I have used the following engines:
OS-61SF
Webra Racing 61LS
YS-120SC
YS-140FZ
OS-140RX (with and without the Mintor dual plug head)
Mintor 3M-170
OS-140RX-FI
In my opinion the absolutely most reliable pattern engine on the market today is the OS-140RX equipped with the sealed rear bearing from the OS-140RX-FI. The engine is light, powerful, economical to run using 10% nitro fuel, and in my mind OS has some of the most reliable engines on the market. The small parts count compared to a 4 stroke also means that it's much cheaper to maintain. Based on my own experiences and the above I would recommend the OS-140RX as the best choice.
I know this doesn't help you in regard to the choice of petrol engines, but let's face it, you really need to build a light airframe in order to keep the current 5kg limit in F3A, and even more so when using a petrol engine...

I have written about that plane with sm 30. I've been talking with the owner and he says that it's really enough for pattern. sm-30 is also good for a 11lbs 3d plane!!!!

RE: ZDZ 40RE Powered Impact
I am new to pattern but was also looking at petrol. Anyone looked at the MVVS 1.60 and their pipe it looks to have enough power and only weights 37 oz with the ignition which is only 7 oz more than a competative glow engine.
