some madman who took a balloon upto the edge space then jumped out. hes even madder because half way up he noticed a leak in his suit, glove i believe. he basically held it tight. when x miles up he jumped out...
now, technically he broke the sound barrier, but up that high there isn't enough air so i doubt there was a bang, as he got to thicker stuff he slowed down to what is normal drop speed of about 120 mph.

Highest parachute jump - Aug 16, 1960 - from 102,800' in a parachute test over New Mexico by USAF Capt Joseph W Kittinger, clad in a pressure suit and carried to that altitude in a balloon gondola. It took 01h:43m to reach altitude, and only 13m:45s to make the return trip. He also set three other records at the same time: (1) the highest man had ever gone in unpowered flight, (2) the longest free-fall in history — 16 miles, (3) the first man to exceed the speed of sound without an aircraft — 614mph at that altitude.
Mmmh...not bad, nearly as fast as my mate!

What will I do inthe wee small hours when I can't sleep. I have really enjoyed looking over the erudite shoulders of those who KNOW!
All the best, goodby.

My recent visit to an aircraft museum revealed the following historic British aircraft from yesteryear – images courtesy of yours truly. This particular infamous plane was designed in the 60s and was capable of Mach 1.2+ at sea level and an operating ceiling of 50000+ft.
Can you name it?

I thought these had all been scrapped. Remember Exchange & Mart advertising minidresses made from TSR2 circuit boards? Where was this?

It first flew in 1964 but was scrapped in 1965 due to rising research costs by the incoming Labour government who ordered all jigs and tooling to be destroyed. In fact most problems had been resolved so the decision to scrap it was mainly political. Only the first of 4 completed aircraft was actually flown.
You can see this aircraft at Cosford Aircraft Museum open daily 10 - 4 pm admission free. It's well worth a visit.
Here's another famous aircraft that's now on show there......
This research aircraft broke the world absolute air speed record then held by the North American F-100A Super Sabre (822mph) to 1132mph in March 1956.

Thanks. It was estimated to be 25 years ahead of all competition at the time. I still think the Chancellor of the time was a communist mole.....

I want to say Mustang, possibly in the "Old Crow" colours, but there must be a catch.

RE: Do you know your airplanes? (Quiz)
Looks like a Liberator to me.
Can anyone guess the plane in post 762?
Here's another one.
I took this picture at a local museum and it is the only one still in existence.
