Default AMA Insurance Questions

OK on a US Military base how can the AMA's insurance even work? It's obvious they aren't going to cover a claim of a rc plane hitting a multi million dollar jet...nor would they cover property damage.
Also I've paged through some AMA rules on contests and such...how can these be AMA legal on a area not open to the public? John Doe cannot access a military base and fly there. I'm just trying to figure just what the AMA can do for a flying club located on a Military Base, other than establish some rules and basically take the money of members. I E-Mailed the AMA and asked these question and recieved this as a reply. "Yes you can fly any where as long as you follow the AMA safety code." How can the AMA establish a saftey code someplace they aren't even allowed to access? And how does this answer my questions? Yes I asked them it also and got no reply back.

So basically I'm asking just what can the AMA do for fliers who fly in area's restricted to the public? I've read all their pamphlets and haven't seen anything they do that would benefit a non-public field.

If you are looking for reason not to join the AMA it appears you already have them. You don't need insurance, you are flying where they don't care if you have insurance, with people that don't care. And you don't want a model magazine dedicated to the broad aspects of the hobby and you never plan on flying at another site where there is an AMA chartered club or sanctioned event. Sounds like you have all the reasons a rational person would need. What is your point otherwise?

Well first off I never said I was looking for reasons to not join the AMA...our club is AMA Chartered. I'm simply wondering why it is, and from what your saying it's cause of a magazine or insurance? So your telling me the AMA basically does nothing for us at all. They cannot and will not pay for damages on non-public fields so the insurance doesn't apply to us. So what else does? I'm wanting to know if any other Miltary bases have this issue or not....It's not about joining the AMA, we're paid very well we can afford it. Just cause your a AMA member doesn't give you access to ALL fields either, Military Bases are one instance a AMA card will not get you through the gate. Not all doctors belong to the medical association and not all dentist belong to the dentists association but that does not make them less qualified or worse professionals. On the government facility we cannot say "You MUST have AMA" it's a field open too anyone with access to the base, so why do we have it? I understand the saftey concerns and agree with supporting the hobby but why pay fee's when we cannot force the fliers to join or follow the same rules?

badz, there are many things that AMA can do for anyone flying model airplanes. Military bases have their rules and they change from day to day. Many military groups get various ways to host a meet on a military base with special ingress and egress conditions for the day/s of the event.
I flew off many military bases -- way back -- however I know that there are still special cases where it can be done. I used to fly CL stunt models between two rows of B-47 Bombers, all loaded to go to war. Sure glad that the horn did not blow while flying or that one did not break off the lines! [X(][:@]

_ell, the first contest I ever CDed was a AAA combined FF and CL 2-day contest off a military base. We had some problems, but everything came off A-OK.

If you wish to have a base club, with non-military invited or not, and if you go to your Base/Wing Commander with a reasonable plan, I'm willing to bet that after some refining and negotiating, it can be done. Having AMA insurance for those members and/or contestants that are non-military just may be the key factor in accomplishing your goals.

Ever hear of the Navy Nats?

Here at Fairchild we can only "recommend AMA" in case you happen to have an accident that would involve a person, POV, or structure. What we did was to go through the wing leadership for their blessing on flying and them we devised a safety plan that basically mirrors the AMA safety code. We also must contact base operations to let them know we are flying so that any full size aircraft in the patern are aware that we active via ATIS. Although we are not in the flying pattern we must have a spotter available in the event a full size jet comes close to us. At that point we are required to drop down low or land until the aircraft is well clear. We have a huge area to fly that is well away from houses, cars and such (it is the old B-52 alert pad). Seems work well for us. We can and have had civilians fly with us, we just need to escort them onto the base...
