I also plan to build a Chipmunk from a kit in a distant future. What bugs me is that the cowl is now made of ABS and not fiberglass.

I broke my Chippy canopy during assembly, so Ithermo formed another one from a home made plug. I thinkshe looks evenmoreattractive withher new canopy.

Ed, found it and it is save to my favorites so I can read it starting tonight.

Thanks again.
You're welcome - I am assembling a twm 70" P47 myself - getting pretty close to finished now, but I am a slow assembler so it will probably be a few more weeks till it's done. I'm using a Zenoah G26 which i already had on hand, and air retracts instead of the twm retracts since it calls for 2 retract servos and I like air/spring down retracts. I moved the servos back behind the CG to help balance it and also to give access to maintain the fuel tank. I assembled it to check the CG again last week and it balances almost perfectly with no weight added. The p47 is a very well designed airplane - I consider TWM and Top Flite to be the two best warbird companies.

Nice Ed.

How about pictures of the G26 and the retracts, I have a TF P-47 with an OS 91 Surpass but the color are to dark, she is a really good flyer, I like to try gas on my next P-47

It's a nice plane but World Models have copied Carl Golderg's plans.
I also have a Chippy clone but mine comes from TopModel.
And the TopModel Chippy cloneseems to come from the same factory as theNitroPlanes Chippy.

All the credit goes to Carl Golberg. He was a genius !
Actually all of the airplanes in this series, The Chippy, Ultimate bipe, Extra and Sukhoi were designed by Dave Patrick. And there were obvious copies of most of them. One can actually use the ABS cowl parts as a mold and make fiberglass peices. It's actually quite easy

Paul

You could get a fiberglass cowl and wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialist.
go to cowl and accessories for kits then find Carl Goldberg.

Today I completed the things I had to work on the Chippy like installing Jose', my pilot ( i just named him ) and sealing the seams on the Thouglong covering.

Yesterday I said I was going to be done by noon today, what do you know I was done by 3 pm just 3 hours pass the planed completion time.

The day turned out OK here in the bay area so at that time I decide to venture to the field, around 1/2 hour drive, when I got there I found one member already packing to go home, right away I put my airplane together, gas it and got ready to start the engine when I remembered that I had the glow igniter charging at home [:@], my solutions was to use the mini glow driver that I installed on my fuel box a few months ago, but not having the extension for the glow plug I had to dig into my field box to find a pair of alligator wires, I got the engine going with that [&:]

I got the range check done so it was time to fly her, on the first flight, well you have to see the video, I will post it soon ( working on it )

Nice model and looks like she flies great. I just bought one of these two months ago used. The wings are joined already and it has the retractable landing gear. I also got two O.S. 91 Surpasses with it and a lot of misc. stuff all for a $100. I don't know if mine is older then the one you got or not. Looks like the decals were on yours out of the box, mine are not. Always wanted a Chippy now I got one. I have something else on the building board now and a repair to do on another plane then I get this one going. Should be ready by the spring, can't wait.

The decals on the new ones are on the covering already, the only decals they give you are the ones for the wheel pants and the cowl
Looks like you got yourself a smoking deal, with the two engines

CARS II,
Iliked the second video much better. Music just covers up the sweet sound of the engine. Also, we saw more of the plane and that's what it's all about.
Ijust picked up a Great Planes Art Scholl Chimpmunk (81" ws) from a fellow club member for a great price. She's a little bruised but, with a little TLC she'll be good as new. This one has a G26 gasser mounted on it and a smoke system. This will be my first smoker and I'm excited to get her going. I'm hopping I can find wheel pants for this bird. Tower Hobbies still has a cowl or two in stock but, didn't see much else. I also need one gear strut but, I think I can bend my own.
One of the previous owners had a rough landing a ripped the gear out from under her. It should be fairly easy to repair and I'd like to get started on it soon.
When I get her in the air I'll try to remember to take some video and post it here.

Thanks for the comment on the video, I understand about seen the airplane, I posted the first video because that was the maiden flight, I do like the second video better, I did all this alone, on the second video I was able to film the airplane a bit more since I had to set the camera on the ground.

Rev LOL, I understand and appreciate your comments on the video.

RJ, if you need wheel pants check out this company, I think the wheel pants on the right is what you are looking for, always give them a call before ordering.

Cars II,
I could tell you didn't have a camera "helper" because the camera wasn't moving and blurring out of focus. Both are good quality videos, I just prefer the ones with no music ....except the engine(s).
I forgot to tell you how nice your bird looks. Mine has the same trim scheme and Ilove the colors. I hope you have a long and happy relationship with her.
I've been to the FG Secialties web site and had a look at the list of products for the Goldberg "kit". Turns out it's a smaller version of the one Ihave and the pants would also be too small. I'll call them anyway but, I don't expect them to have what Ineed. Besides, I'm pretty rough on wheel pants and they probably wouldn't last too long anyway.
Keep the pictures and videos coming.

Thank you for the complement on the Chippy, I wish I had builded her from the ground up [8D].

If you look at the Fiberglass website you will see that they have wheel pants of many sizes for use on any airplane, that is what I was refering at.

I will have a few more pictures and at least one more video, this time I will have someone do the filming for me

CARS II ....
You're very welcome.

As Igot into the re-conditioning of my Chipmunk, Idiscovered that it has a Zenoah G38 engine and not a G26 as Iwas told when Ibought it. The power output is about the same but, the G38 will be a bit heavier due to the larger displacement. It should develop more torque though and that means a larger prop in length and pitch. It came with a nice Xoar 18x8 and it looks like it may be a good match for this engine/airplane combo. We'll see.
The project is picking up speed as I've removed all of the stuff Iwanted to change and started installing the equipement Iwant in it. Iremoved 2 heavy old NIMHbattery packs. One was completely dead but, the other is alive and well. I've ordered two LIFEPo packs to replace the NIMHs which will save about a pound of weight (well, maybe a half pound ).
Today I re-plumbed the fuel and smoke tanks, installed the fuel tank and ran the fuel lines, installed both electrical systems ...one for the ingnition and one for the receiver/servos, installed the smoke pump and feed line, installed the servo tray, the throttle servo, elevator servos (2), and installed the rudder servo. Ialso fabricated a new gear strut for the one that was missing. I'm glad I bought a 4 ft. section of 1/4" rod as it took a couple of tries before Igot it right. Whew ! I'm tired.
I need to get my repaired muffler back from my welding buddy and install it before Ican complete the smoke oil system but, Iwill be working on the tank and valve side of it very soon.
Imay take the day off tomorrow and go flying. I missed a beautiful day today but, got a lot done on "Old Chip". I feel the need ....the need for ....flying? You know what I mean.

Rev, go ahead and do it, you will have lots of fun building

RJ

Nice going with the building cession, looks like you are well on the way with the chippy reconstruction, I wish I could get a bigger Chippy in the near future, how about some pictures when you get a chance.

I have been under the weather for the past three days ( no work for me ) but feeling much better today, I had a chance to keep working on my Chipmunk, had to move the battery about 10" forward to get her to balance at the recommended CG, the CG was about 3/8 behind the recommended point ( no wander she flew tail heavy the first flight [] ) the battery ended up under the fuel tank and against the fire wall, also I clear some of the screws wing mount as the flaps torque roads were pushing it at full travel.

I did a quick check on the wing/stab incident and it looks like when the horizontal stab is at 0 degrees the wing has +1/2 degree of incident, now that I change the CG by moving the battery forward I like to see if the downward elevator goes away if it doesn't then I will have to take a closer look at the wing incident ( tomorrow Thursday test fly with new CG )

This Great Planes E-chipmunk just caught my eye, it has been there but I just didn't see it, come to realize that I have most if not all of the parts needed to complete her.................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm thinking.

Time to do some research on this one [8D]

Crap!! its on order, I guest they don't have an arrival date.

I know for sure I have the four mini servos, LiPos, receiver and if the motor/speed control I have is equal to what they recommend then it is a go for sure

CARS II,
Before you leap on that E bird, take a look at this one. The price is right and it looks very nice.

http://www.shop.aztechaeromodels.com...F-SS-CMUNK.htm

At an all up weight of 11 to 12 lbs it looks very ripe for a 26cc to 30cc gasser. Hobby King sells a nice 26cc gasser for less than $130 at their USAWarehouse. I had the 26cc on an 80" Spacewalker II and it pulled it extremely well. I have one of their 15cc engines on biplane right now and it pulls it very well. They run great and are a great value for the money.
Check out the engine here ....
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html

By the way ....Idon't work for HK or get a commission. I promote products I've used and found to be a good deal for the money.
