VQ P-40 Build

RE: VQ P-40 Build
I have enough channels on my Jr 9303 that I simply mated one channel(like AUX2) to the flap channel. You can also program a mix to do the same basic thing. A reversin y-harness also works and ive done that in other planes in the past.

By the way, Top Flite teeth decals for their Gold Edition P-40 are too big for the cowl of this plane.

Unfortunately I have not the skill to paint a shark's mouth.
I wonder if the Top Flite's decals can be made to work at all?

How did you guys do the flaps on yours? Did you use a rev Y harness or do something different?

How did you do it?
Can one of the servos be mounted the other way?

RE: VQ P-40 Build
I ended up using a reversing Y harness in mine, worked like a charm for the one flight it made, the wing came apart on landing. 1/4" balsa stick for spars ore no where near enough. The wing felt very stoute indeed, now I realize it was only the sheeting that gives it it's strength. The only thing that stayed together was the box the gear was mounted to because I epoxied a 3/8" piece of ply to mount the retracts too. Split the wing 3/4 of the way to the tip on the top and bottom.. This is not VQ's fault by no means, just bad quality control. Actually glad it happened this way instead of coming apart in flight and possibly loosing much more. Didn't even bend or twist a retract. My suggestion is to get as much glue inside that wing as possible, half the ribs on both wings don't have glue and the ones that do look almost spot glued here and there. Here's some pics, I've since then ca'd the crack but you can clearly see that the spar in lacking and the webbing doesn't fit at all. Oh well what can you do? Live and learn I guess.

RE: VQ P-40 Build
A few More... bummer... I waited 2 years to fly this. Originally had a YS1.10 and $400 sierra retracts in this. Not sure it would've held up to the power of the YS..

RE: VQ P-40 Build
I have my P40 for about 4 years , two things ,
1)the flap set up was made much more complicated then needed , if I simply had the servo arm coming out the bottom of the wing the set up would be much easier then attempting to bend the wire
2)While the overall quality is very good , I felt the wood was briddle from the very begining . I still rate this plane as one of my best arfs overall and equal to a Top Flight kit in its size .
as far as the retract area , I guess I was luckey , many a landing and no rib or wing issues

RE: VQ P-40 Build
I agree that the flap setup could've been different, was a bear trying to get the wire set right and the throws even. I'm sure not all are bad as there is always a few that get by or were a Monday/Friday build.. Yes the wood is very brittle, the ribs feel almost like paper. But if its all put together right it is very strong. Well looks like its time to find another P-40 to put my gear in. I liked the VQ model as it is so different compared to the H9's that are usually out and about.

RE: VQ P-40 Build
Hey ya shane.... Sorry to hear... and see...
Yours is the 1st P-40 I have seen have any issues with a retract pulling out...
But if you plant a wheel or gear in the ground short of a runway, or in the grass hard enough it will pull out....
Was yours a "normal" or "rough" landing? ... was it "short of the runway"????
I appreciate the info...as a supporting dealer , I always try to share "IN THE FIELD REPORTS" with the Factory any chance I get....
... TOYOTA has service Depts for a reason... even the best can have issues sometimes....
I emailed you several weeks ago...
Talk to you soon....

RE: VQ P-40 Build
Hello Tomas,
Yeah I been really busy at work the last couple weeks. I did send you an email yesterday or this morning before work, can't remember. It was a normal landing with a small bounce, maybe enough to be a wire landing gear but not too pull out the gear. I will wait to hear back from you through email. She is a fun plane to fly.. no doubt about that.

Are you getting another VQ P-40 for your Sierra Retracts?

RE: VQ P-40 Build
I am getting another ,dispite the typical shortcomings of any arfs the VQ P40 is one of the best .
I will do a major overhaul on my next one , simply stated a major bash , I want to get it as close to a Home built kit that is all mine .
Just a few notes , Hobby People make spinners under there magnum brand that are perfact for this plane in all aluminum .
I used a macs muffler extension on my os 91 , all in the cowl no cuts , what I wont do is use the sullivan fule plug , unlike the easy fuelers , the carb needs to be closed when fueling (stupid me ) took three attempts of flooding my engine before I figured that out lol.
I used my own home made decals for shark teeth and painted the continuation around the front of the cowl , will do the same again .
I dont know of any arfs in the $200 range that are fully sheeted and have real thick airfoils .

RE: VQ P-40 Build
Hi Everyone,
This post is a clone of one I made at rcgroups. I am eagerly waiting for the AVGs to come back in stock. Can't wait to get started on this beauty. I have built ARFs in the past, but this will be my first scale warbird. I have a bunch of questions and I was hoping you guys could help me out with some of them.
1) I'm using a Thunder Tiger .61 GP (which is actually a .65 cu i) for this. Its rated at 2.000 bhp @ 16000 RPM. 24.46 oz. without muffler.
Will this be enough power? I'm not looking to tear up the sky, just something that's not woefully inadequate. I'm getting nervous seeing all the posts about 100 and 110 size 4 strokes, while the kit suggests a 70-91 four stroke.
2) The PDF manual for the VQ P40 shows that a 2 stroke can be mounted diagonally, which will only cause for a little part of the cylinder head to protrude from the starboard side cowl, while the muffler should be completely enclosed (i doubt this is possible for TT .61's muffler, its HUGE). I'd like to mount the engine inverted with a slim muffler to avoid cutting the cowl at all.
Does anyone know of any mufflers or pipes I can use with my TT .61 which will fit completely inside the P40's cowl? Will a Bisson Pitts split work?
3) I've heard that there has been trouble with the mechanical retracts. However, I don't have the $$ for pneumatic retracts . If I follow VQ's retract addendum, can I still make the mechanical work? I'm using an HS75 servo.
4) Is the VQ P40 still shipping with the retracts? If not, where can I get them? Tomas, can you shed some light on this please?
I'd be most grateful for any assistance. Thanks!

RE: VQ P-40 Build
Would love to come down, but I have to work 3 weeks in Nevada at a time and only home for a week. Unfortunately that falls on the days I have to work. Bummer cause my wife really wants to go to Texas, that's where she is from.
