Gas Engine in Carl Goldberg Decathalon
Has anyone put a gas engine in this airplane? I think there is enough area in the cowl and it has a big wing so could handle the additional weight. I was thinking an MVVS 1.60. Would like to hear if anyone has tried it and what the results were.
Thanks.
Thanks.

We don't want to hear from you in a month or so that the Goldberg Decathlon is a piece of crap because the gear collapsed or the wing broke or the tail came off.
That airplane is designed to fly with a 91 four stroke. That means that it has the strength to handle a 91 four stroke.
Good luck and be sure to videotape the first flight.

I saw one with a Saito 150 and it was a real rocketship. Throttle management is definitely needed. How much more does a MVVS weigh than a Saito?

The MVVS would weight quite a bit more than the Saito...especially the Saito 91 or 100 that would be ideal for it.
Jim, I of course understand what you're saying and you're probably right. I will likely use a Saito 100 (same weight as the .91 just a bit taller) a motor I have had some positive experience with.

I've had one for about two or three years with an O.S. 120 four stroke with pump. That gives plenty of power. Actually the firewall has come loose and I pinned it. I think it would need some beefing up for a gasser. I'm not sure how much overpowering is needed on this plane. Everytime I have flown it, I feel like I'm flying a schoolbus. It is a relaxing flyer. Also needed to strenghten the gear with music wire and some clamps. Good luck.

Thanks, guys. I'm convinced. I wasn't interested in the gasser for the power but just that I wanted a Decathlon and would like the convenience of gas.
Sounds like a Saito 100 or at most Saito 120 is appropriate for this airplane for power and weight.
